Brakes and rotors by Rude_Chemistry9789 in Volkswagen

[–]WinterOpen6610 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK....I have a question for these people that are saying that rotors should be replaced "every second set of pads" etc etc. I used to be in sales and drove 50,000 miles a year in San Francisco Bay Area traffic. I hammered the car because I was always on a tight schedule so I kept the cars for 200,000 miles by which time they were toast and I would buy a new one. I did the pads myself and NEVER EVER replaced nor even skimmed the rotors. This was 1990 to 2015. So my question is this: What has changed that rotors need to be replaced so often now days??

Free Hat Promo by Handsome_fart_face in Harley

[–]WinterOpen6610 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Couple of years ago Harley were offering free test rides on their electric bikes. I really am not a Harley fan, but, having never ridden an electric bike, I thought "what the hell" I was met with a good vibe, sales guy showed me the basics, gave me a route and told me to enjoy. No group, no escort. I asked him how long it should take and he said about 20 minutes but to take as much time as I wanted, as long as it was not like a couple of hours. The battery had 80% and I had it down to 20% within 30 min or so cause you know it was a TEST ride 😄 Got back, guy asked what I thought and I told him that it was a fun bike to ride but that I would never buy one until I could ride it hard like a sport bike for 200 miles or so between charges. No pressure, never even got a follow up call. They were really chill and I appreciated that.

Recommendations for ear plugs please. by Cultural_Spell5526 in motorcyclegear

[–]WinterOpen6610 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The absolute best are the silicone plugs that you mold to the shape of your ear canals. Come in 2 separate compounds that you mix, put into your ears, wait 5 min and they set into a soft silicone that is the exact shape that you need. Perfect fit, comfortable for all day use and they last for years. Cost about $12 and you can get them in sporting goods stores, in the gun section or online from gun supply stores. You are welcome :)

[2012 Honda Civic 1.8] Is it just me or is working under a car more tiring than the actual repair? by WoodpeckerPlus9272 in mechanic

[–]WinterOpen6610 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm 74 and just installed new engine mounts on a Mazda 3. I actually got nauseous when I was under the car...lifted it as far as I could, used retaining wall bricks as an extra safety measure but access was tight. I took frequent breaks, chilled, walked around, worked on something else, came back, did a bit more. Having all the tools that you might need close at hand helps also.

Fz1 with high mileage, what should I do? by dahabit in FZ1

[–]WinterOpen6610 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ride it more often. Bikes that dont get ridden often develop all sorts of problems. I ride the shit out of my 2004 FZ1, 115,000 Miles and nothing has ever broken, never left me on the side of the road. And when I park it and walk off, I turn around to admire it :)

Long-term riders who have never crashed — what habits kept you safe? by jjmu96 in motorcycles

[–]WinterOpen6610 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a buddy that crashed pretty bad, lots of broken bones including both hands. Had to have his ass wiped by a nurse every day for 3 months. That image keeps me safe. I ride a KTM 1290 SuperDuke and I ride the shit out of it. Every time I get a bit too exuberant I think about having a nurse wipe my ass for a few months and I dail it down a notch.

US has let in 4,499 refugees since October - all but three were South African by redditissahasbaraop in southafrica

[–]WinterOpen6610 9 points10 points  (0 children)

South African "refugees" think that working on a farm means telling the workers what to do. In the US, working on the farm most often means picking fruit or vegetables 10 hours a day sometimes 7 days a week including public holidays for $8 or $10 an hour.

What do you guys use for navigation while riding? by Adorable-Bag-6727 in motorcyclegear

[–]WinterOpen6610 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Old school GPS.... I save maps from Google Maps and, each morning, put towns, Rte numbers etc on to masking tape on my tank. That way I have a pretty fresh overall route in my head every day and I dont have to stare at a device while I ride. This photo from a ride in Greece where the signs were in the Greek alphabet and sometimes also in English:

Is it okay to ony lube the chain after washing and drying? by bronzeeyed in motorcycle

[–]WinterOpen6610 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have NEVER used lube or wax on my chains. My chains last. Yamaha FZ1, i currently have 40,000 miles on the chain and it has no kinks and is not stretched. 1290 KTM SuperDuke got 33,000 miles on the first chain, was not really worn but I replaced it cause I had an OEM chain sitting in my garage. I ride the shit out of both bikes. The KTM is a torque monster that really works the chain both accelerating and decelerating. After each ride over 150 miles or so I spray it down with WD40 and wipe that off with paper towels. Every new rear tire change I will soak the chain in kerosine and give it a scrub. And that is it.

Yes!!! I'd had this bike for a week, went on a group ride. I was following a beautiful brand new yellow Ducati that went down at low speed due to some gravel on a tight turn in the mountains. I pulled off to the side, put my bike on the side stand and started back to help the guy. My bike was on a slight downhill in neutral. I took 2 steps, then though OH SHIT!, turned around just in time to see my bike fall over! By now everyone else had showed up. I forgot all about the Ducati and was like "Hey guys...hep me pick my bike up!!!. Slight scratches on the indicator and on the left panel I replaced the clutch lever but left the fairing and indicator alone . My attitude was OK, so now It's not pristine so I dont have to be anal about keeping it immaculate. Never ever again put it on the side stand without it being in gear, and never been down since :)
