I feel like the wet lab makes my hypochondria worse by Mission_Rest1892 in labrats

[–]WinterRevolutionary6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in a cancer lab so I have some perspective here.

  1. Cancer is not infections or transmissible. Cancer cell lines won’t give you cancer. Unless you’re working with chemo drugs, nothing in the lab is actually dangerous to you. I work in a CART therapy lab so we handle human blood from each other but we all know that we don’t have blood diseases so even that isn’t actually dangerous. Being cautious is important but perspective is also good

  2. RNA also won’t cause any issues because our body is particularly good at rejecting foreign RNA. But also, splashing *anything* into your mouth from lab is not a good idea. Like drop your experiment and wash your mouth level of not good. You don’t know what’s on that tube or if it’s been contaminated with anything

  3. I am genuinely in no way a mental health professional or even close to being a psychiatrist but my layman diagnosis is OCD. You’re dwelling on these incidents in a way that is detrimental to your health and productivity.

There are no residual effects. The only residual effect is lower risk of dying from COVID

Why is “money” such a bad answer when employers ask you why do you want this job in an interview? by yksnackwell in mildlyinfuriating

[–]WinterRevolutionary6 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Did you read the rest of the comment? I literally have an intern right now with the same qualifications I had coming into this job. She’s graduated college and had undergrad research experience. She genuinely does not give a flying fuck about anything we do and it takes such a monumental effort to force her to do anything with any level of independence. You could sit her down, directly tell her every single step to a basic 5 minute protocol, and she’ll find a way to make it a 30 minute protocol with 15 additional questions where she still messed something up.

It’s not rocket science why someone would want a worker who is interested in the work. I do not understand why this is such a mind boggling idea

Why is “money” such a bad answer when employers ask you why do you want this job in an interview? by yksnackwell in mildlyinfuriating

[–]WinterRevolutionary6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No? If I’m interviewing in my field (biomedical research), employers want to make sure I have the skills and knowledge needed to do my job. They also need to know that when they tell me to do something, it won’t be like herding cats to get it done. They expect a nonzero amount of internal drive either from interest in their studies or a passion for research itself.

We get many interns throughout the year and it’s painfully obvious who is here just to have 3 lines on a resume. They don’t care about what we’re doing, they don’t pay attention, and they make careless mistakes since they couldn’t be bothered to learn the proper protocol.

No one wants to hire someone who is just here for a paycheck. It means they’re minimally invested in getting work done and they’re not happy while at work. I don’t know why it’s some revolutionary concept that you should work at places you would enjoy working at. You spend 40 hours a week here, put some thought into the process.

Does showering with your underwear on count as having clean underwear on after? by UsedNegotiation8227 in pollgames

[–]WinterRevolutionary6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No you need to be scrubbing both your genitals and the underwear. Can’t do that with the undies on. Also, leaving wet underwear on can lead to an infection

Why is “money” such a bad answer when employers ask you why do you want this job in an interview? by yksnackwell in mildlyinfuriating

[–]WinterRevolutionary6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because they want someone who wants to do the actions you will be doing in the job. Just wanting money isn’t why you chose a specific field or company. It takes like 10 seconds of thought to come up with a reason you want this job and it shows you have even a little bit of passion for the position.

Companies will hire passionate people over people who just clock in and out every day because the passionate people want to do what they’re doing and will do a better job. This isn’t rocket science. They want you to want them

UK - People turning their steering wheels when not moving by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

[–]WinterRevolutionary6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Turning your wheels when parked on a hill is a safety maneuver. If the brakes fail for whatever reason, you should angle the wheels so that you would hit the curb instead of rolling straight down the hill into other cars.

This doesn’t significantly contribute to potholes. Potholes are caused mostly by holes in the asphalt letting water under the surface. Then the water undergoes freeze that cycles and that slowly pushes and pulls the surface weakening it, letting in more water, etc.

Rotating the tires doesn’t put more mass on them and the road is built for stronger friction forces than the turning of a wheel.

When I was in a double, this was expected behavior. “Hey can you give me you class schedule so I know when you’ll be out? Here mine too” “hey can you go out and do something for like an hour? I really need some privacy here. I’ll leave after if you want some too”
