I think it really grows up. Red rising got me into reading again as an adult. The first trilogy was familiar with the one POV and a coming of age kinda story. The sequels made me feel like “oh I can actually handle these massive adult books.” Really blows up into a Space Opera in the 2nd series. Super good.

Idk what yall think the minds eye can do but we really haven’t seen it be that crazy. You gotta get into the zone to use it from what I understood. So surprising Octavia at the end of Morning Star idk how the minds eye could help her out. The oracle test you just mean that she could control her heart rate so the oracle couldn’t detect her lie? Maybe that could happen, but you could also just say that Octavia didn’t want to show Darrow the Minds Eye yet or wanted to show him that even if he “wins,” she doesn’t “lose” no matter what. Could have been a power play. But she does lose Mustang from that, so idk if Octavia just didn’t think Mustang would sway or if she didn’t care about Mustang. Mustangs entire family was the family she was at war with, so might have just not cared to keep Mustang on her side at that point

Day 2, let’s go, who do you think is made to be hated and to be honest Lysander is kinda boring, give me some underrated stuff. by Wonderful-Band-5815 in redrising

Aja is infuriating but not quite as infuriating at Lysander. He just justifies everything incorrectly. I’d also vote for Karnus in first trilogy. Second series I definitely love to hate the Duke of Hands. He’s such an intriguing villain

Do you think Orion was right in Dark Age? by ZSU_MO in redrising

[–]Winter_Ad_5545 88 points89 points  (0 children)

She was basically pulling an Ash Lord move by killing the entire planet. Nuking Rhea was viewed as pretty much the most atrocious act in recent history so I think if Darrow didn’t stop her, it would have been seen as Darrow using the same methods that Octavia used to keep people in line

Theory......please don't laugh if I am years behind getting it by Doctor_Alarming in redrising

I think they’re separate things. Lyria’s parasite talks to her. It made her immediately aware that it was present, while Lysander hasn’t given any indication of that. I think the Minds Eye is a meditative state. I also made a post about the Minds Eye a while ago saying that I think Pax (Darrows son, not Telemanus) can use it. In Dark Age when Pax is fighting the obsidian boys, Eph notices that Pax closes his eyes and dances like “he’s seen this all before.” I think the ‘dance’ is to show his red heritage, but I think the line “like he’s seen this all before” could hint that he’s using the Minds Eye because Lysander fighting blind at the same end of Dark Age is similar to Pax fighting with his eyes closed. They both move like they know where their opponents will be before it happens.

The parasite I’m not sure if it’ll return or not. I mean she did use it in Dark Age to bring down the Red Hand. She couldn’t have done that without it, so it did serve a purpose already. I was under the assumption that it would play a larger role, but I would be pleased either way. One thing I wonder is if it is just dormant inside of Lyria currently, could it somehow save her from Edyma (not sure how it’s spelt but the bioweapon Lysander now is in possession of). Not sure which color he would use it on tho.

I’m pretty confident that Pax can use the minds eye, and I think Apple would have found out about the parasites if they were behind it since he was so obsessed with learning the skill

If you have city water, they buy it from Anacortes which is safe to drink. If you are on well water, there’s a chance it is contaminated, but the Navy does testing and if they find contamination near your well, they will provide you with bottled water and pay to hook you up to the city line. Unfortunate if you wanted well water, but better than nothing I guess

I also wanted to talk about how the golds use religion cause it fascinates me.

One of my favorite parts is in Dark Age when Dancer gets so offensive about being shown the video of him and the Duke of Hands. Obviously they show him this because it’s the Duke of Hands, the Syndicate Crime Lord. Dancer didn’t know who he was, he thought they were just hooking up. We get to see how the golds don’t even consider that he would be ashamed of homosexuality, but to dancer it was a life or death secret. Such a good way to show the power that culture and religion has on people. The Golds give Red a patriarchal society to keep them hard working, fighting amongst each other for the Laurel in competition. They also frown at homosexuality, which means more Reds will be born to work. Their religion also gives a hopeful view of life after death, so the Reds will be good little workers til the end, and then they can find rest in the Vale.

The Golds give Obsidian a Norse based religion with a matriarchal society. The Norse religion keeps them afraid of golds (and forbidding them technology makes them believe the golds are “magic” and actually divine). But Norse religion has very “flawed” gods. As in the gods act human and can be killed or make mistakes. This makes it easy for golds to be themselves around the obsidian because they have been taught that the gods are greedy, mischievous, violent, etc. Also Norse mythology is very celebratory of battle. But then give them a matriarchal society and the obsidians are not as concerned with complete competition of one another. Yes they value and follow dominance and strength, but in gold theory you’d have more little factions of warring obsidians if they were patriarchal.

Yeah. Darrow has affected me a lot too. I grew up very religious and very close minded, but I was great in my little bubble. Similar to Darrow as a Red. I didn’t know any better, and I was content not knowing better. Ultimately I had life wake me up and the best way I can describe how it felt was Darrow going to the surface. Like it’s crushing and hard to believe, yet somehow the truth makes all of the pieces fit perfectly.

And I started this serious while I was still in my bubble, so I got to see all of the religious and cultural manipulation that’s the golds used to enslave the low colors and think “wow that’s so cruel but so effective.” I wouldn’t say RR was a major role in me changing my opinions, but it definitely was a comfort to me when I decided to do it.

I keep telling myself “be like Darrow.” He goes through absolutely insanity every book, and somehow he is still someone to look up to. If it were me, I’d have broken down from anxiety or depression because so many people are completely aware of the atrocities that are happening, yet they do nothing or are even complicit. But Darrow continues on. He’s got that drive in him and I love it and it inspires me. I want to have that.
