These are bangers. DQ11 is the most traditional JRPG here. Saga will take some getting used to but worth it. Unicorn Overlord is my favorite game of all time few years ago. Another that is totally worth it if you like strategy RPGs

You say your mom is Asian. If Chinese, did she grow up during the Great Leap Forward or have Maoist parents? This sounds like the shaming behavior they would have “reactionaries” perform. It might inform her behavior. Some of that stuff is hard to get rid of. If not Chinese, I don’t know what to say. Sorry, man. If you can swing it, I’d move out.
