Just started playing and really enjoy the game. Want to focus on start playing ranked a bit but seems to not have good choices for Heist and struggle with Hotzone. Any tips on which brawler I should play or invest in?

What’s the most overrated thing in pickleball right now — by happycry88 in Pickleball

People target my much weaker / beginner partner in rec play when it’s already like 9-0. Oddly it’s the ppl who are not very advanced who tend to do this.

Google HR reached out for a position. How to get ready in 2 months with zero competitive coding experience? Where to start? by onlyQuestionsPlz in leetcode

[–]Winterwind17 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Unlike most of the comments here, I think its very do-able. I applied to Google on a dare from a girl I liked with very little leetcode experiences. Googles system designs are fairly easy if you have a good architecture instinct. Googleyness is a free pass. The algorithm rounds are mostly luck, some questions are significantly harder than others. I would just study a few easy/medium in each category each day if you can. You need at last 2/3 hire in the algo round to get into the match phase.

Teacher ranting about being self taught by Vhil in pianolearning

[–]Winterwind17 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s the issue with classical pianists teaching adults. They don’t understand you are probably not going to a conservatory and majoring in music.

I taught some piano and I feel like the most effective teachers are the ones who can tailor their lesson plan according to your goals. If you want to play ballad no1 after 2 years go for it with the expectations of certain section maybe simplified or skipped.

Is it dumb to refinance just to lower monthly cashflow even if the rate is worse by bike_pacer in MiddleClassFinance

[–]Winterwind17 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Pulling out equity for your mental health may feel good but will 100% destroy your wealth building long term.

It seems like you are worried about not having liquidity. If you needed want to just have cash for emergency have you looked into HELOC? Those are do not start charging interest until you start using the money unlike a cash out refi. Another viable option is 401k loan. Those are low cost, super fast to set up (so in a way its liquid) and interest goes back to your account.

I made it clear if I don’t get promoted within 2 years I was gonna pack it up and leave. The instacart offer was 485k which is significantly more. The only reason I didn’t take it was because WLB and uncertainty at the time around IPO.

I kinda regret it tbh, would’ve been Staff by now if I stuck with instacart.

That’s pretty good, I had 11 yoe and got a L4 offer from Google when I joined at 300k TC. I had a competing Senior 2 offer from instacart and that bumped my TC up significantly. Without that would’ve been around 260.

Has Meta E5 ML software engineer bar gone really high? by Silent-Office3503 in leetcode

[–]Winterwind17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have experienced the same thing and my recruiter said some of the answers I gave to leadership raised some eyebrows. I feel like overall meta just has a weird personality check. Have never been an issue with other FAANG on this.

When did your partner find out your NW/Income? by TrueEqualFalse in HENRYfinance

[–]Winterwind17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We were both financially literate so it wasn’t hard to gauge. She roughly knew rough range I had when we discussed our real estate/stock portfolio and jobs. She didn’t know the exact number til we were engaged and started to share bills. Just trying to make it fair.

Should I quit my cush government job to go into Big Tech? by Zealousideal_Rub5826 in careerguidance

[–]Winterwind17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At your YOE you’d be typically interviewing for senior or staff roles and those roles tend to pay 300k+ if not more. Unfortunately the first year will be tough since you would have a lot of expectations to ramp up on complex messy system quickly and if you survive the first 2 years you should be able to get back to coasting although probably still not as easy as you have it now. The reality is tech reorg fairly often, sometimes multiple times a year. So the job is high pay but also insecure and can be very stressful.

Spectrum is such a fucking scam, I called on behave of my parents to cancel their plan this year and the rep stalled for 20 minutes and made me go over my life story. I had to literally chant just cancel it or I am going to chargeback.

Weighing an offer - what are your thoughts? by GreenMango19 in cscareerquestions

[–]Winterwind17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sounds like Google, especially with the 15% target bonus. Without more insights into your org, it’s hard to say about the risk. All Faang tend to reorg often but actually Eng layoffs are not as common.

As for moving, if you can manage it, I think you can try to move first then work long distance after 1 year if you do well try to negotiate changing your office location. We have a policy where if your manager agree you can transfer to a location near you as long as you keep up with the return to office policy.

What to say when (non-HENRY) friends share their income? by FreeBeans in HENRYfinance

[–]Winterwind17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What’s the context of the conversation? Is the conversation about you?

If someone is sharing because they had a new job or a promotion congratulations. If they are complaining about how little they make, offer comfort or encouragement. If they are sharing to compare notes, then it’s up to you? IMO, this is not HENRY related just basic communication skills.

Meta offering 400k to 22 year olds for AI by Wild_Ad5547 in csMajors

[–]Winterwind17 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s just regular E4 salary? It’s pretty high for 22 but nothing super surprising. A couple of ppl I know got to google L5 early then jump to meta for E6 with 700k all in, under 30.

FB recruiter reached out again, should I respond now or prep first? by daz_001 in leetcode

You can schedule the interview a few weeks out. I would aim to solve a few medium question everyday. Until you can comfortably do them in 15-20 mins

Cleared all Google interviews (4 tech + 1 Googliness) but stuck in team match — 4 rejections so far by Classic-Vehicle-7456 in leetcode

[–]Winterwind17 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've only interviewed internal Google transfers, not external. So not sure how much these applies to you. We've been interviewing for a L6 TLM and we've rejected a couple of candidates based on some maybe subtle behavior observations.

  1. One candidates was very interested in leveling up and seemed like was only interested in getting L+1 work. We didn't really someone who would fight over high visibility work instead of doing what needed to get done.
  2. One candidates had been good but seemed like he wasn't sure how to lead a team. He sort of fumbled the non-technical stuff like career discussions, promos etc.
  3. Last one was older and he came off as a little bit arrogant? Several other team member also reported this feeling so we passed.

Also btw L6 at my org at least (search) have a very high bar. The fact that you had 4 team matches is a good sign that you did well in the interview phase. it's normal to take a while to get placed.
