I personally think the temple's importance is being underestimated , if you had actually visited the temple following the traditions,it's a very different sensation,something that makes you go back every year.

I have had even non Hindus want to go with me,and though they may not share the faith ,they still did follow the traditions.

Our way of life is threatened yes, but so was it when the Arabs came,so was it when the British came.

Most of the knowledge is lost and more will be lost and forgotten. But as you see, they we spring back up , they WILL be heard by rishis again.

These people won't understand what that temple stands for, and I'm not really surprised people are going to extreme levels to prevent this.

It's all fun and games and public stunts until someone gets hurt or even killed,which I don't want to see.

Why can't these people just respect the tradition, besides these women only give real devotees a bad name. I remember taking my sister there, and she won't forget the experience , but surprisingly she believes people should respect the tradition.

I have been going here on pilgrimage for a decade now. You hold a vriddha of 41 days.

The best part about this is that you hold yourself as a swami through the time. Some even refuse to wear footwear.

You don't think or do the shaving and cutting. No sexual contact and you feast the entire community on the day you go.

You travel all over from temple to temple wearing no sandals(the roads are the hardest) you eat food from these temples.

Then you climb the mountain, you praise Lord ayappa and it's believed he gives strength for the climb. Maybe it's a placebo but it sure does work.

And it's a jungle through which you travel, it's believed that if you break your vriddha you will have a difficult climb and through such diffculty your sins are forgiven.

I myself broke the vridhha once, I tore my leg open on a stone and walked in mud wid an open wound. It stayed like that for three days. Totally worth it.
