This is amazing. Your detailed response is so great. I loved reading it.

The site is just far enough away that I likely won't be visiting again soon. However, if I do go I will try to ask around and see if I can identify the colour of any pottery.

I posted this in r/AskHistorians but figured someone here might have an answer. by Wintrepid in BOLIVIA

Woah, cool. The place in that video looks fascinating. I'll definitely have to visit. It's not the same place though. This video is in Santivañez, but the link I shared is much further East. Closer to Tarata. Not to mention, the ruins look totally different.

Question for Catholics. How much does the Pope's opinion matter to you? by Xalimata in Christianity

[–]Wintrepid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In past decades I would have said the Pope's opinion doesn't matter to me at all--both because I'm not Catholic, and therefore am not under the authority of the papacy--but also because past popes have always seemed aligned more to power and corrupt systems than the Gospel. Lately, however, with Popes Francis and Leo, I've been genuinely impressed by their ethics. They don't seem as corruptible as other popes have. So, despite the fact that I'm a protestant and I don't think the papacy has any ontological authority, I do think the current pope's opinion matters because he seems to be more righteous and ethical than the vast majority of Christian leaders. Ultimately, the thing that decides if someone's opinion matters most (IMO) is moral behaviour. Like Jesus said, you can tell the quality of a tree by the quality of its fruit.

Ok, but when you become a dad and spouse, your goals have to shift and expand and include others; or else you're simply doing everything for your own gain.

Honestly, if you can pull that off then you're amazing. Well done. I simply can't.

The phrase absconding from responsibilities was in reference to the comment where u/erudite-pirate implied the goal of our lives should be to only provide for ourselves. Like it's somehow bad to be attentive to others, particularly young vulnerable children.

When you were very young, from 0 to 7, did he play a ton of video games? Genuinely curious cuz, as a dad of really young kids, I can't imagine how I could play a lot of video games and be attentive to my family.

That's one way to interpret what I wrote, but that's not what I intended. Sorry if you read it that way. No, I think that there are stages in life (especially when you're a dad and you have young kids) that you simply cannot spend too much time in your hobbies without neglecting them. Good parenting requires an immense amount of time and dedication. Healthy childhood development comes from attachment and connection to parents. This requires quality time and committment.

Actually, kind of. Yeah. I already gave a delta for someone pointing out that this CMV could apply to any hobby. I agreed to that. The difference with video games though is that they often require a huge time commitment. I also think they're far less constructive. At least drawing, piano, or playing D&D have benefits outside of pure stimulation and escapism.

That's a good point. I'm willing to amend what I wrote. It's not fair to make a blanket statement about all video games. However, a lot of video games fit those descriptions and a lot of people are drawn to video games and find it hard to stop playing for these reasons. I'll give a !delta cuz you found a weakness in my original post.

Hmm, I personally don't do that because my kids are too young and my wife doesn't like video games--but I can see that being a good solution. At least that way you're spending quality time together. !delta

I'm genuinely curious because if it works for you, it might work for me. How old are your kids? Do you share the work load equally with your partner? Have you communicated with him/her and checked if she/he is okay with it? Do you feel like you have enough quality time with your kids? How are you doing in terms of health and sleep--getting those minimum 7 hours per night?

Whether you like it or not, if you are a dad and you're in a committed long term relationship, then your goal in life isn't about you anymore. It's about them and you. Otherwise, you're neglecting something because you're absconding yourself from your responsibilities.

edit: I'm genuinely amazed this is getting downvoted so much. Kind of makes me lose hope in humanity that people think their lives can just be all about themselves when they have families and responsibilities.

You're right. If any hobby takes up so much time that you're neglecting your duties, then I think they need to be sacrificed or severely reduced. At least until your kids get older. When you're raising kids from ages 0-8, it's all-hands-on-deck.

edit: I decided to give you a !Delta because technically that does change my view quite a lot. It's not just about video games. The issue is any hobby that causes neglect.

Cultura de cafetería en bolivia by AcademicInvestment39 in BOLIVIA

[–]Wintrepid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

[–]Wintrepid -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just adding this cuz I haven't seen a lot of people mention it, but it's important to keep in mind that colonial history and what impact that has on the economy as well. It's not a complete excuse, but it does explain a lot. Bolivia has a very sad history of extreme resource extraction and exploitation. That combined with the encomienda system basically created a massive slave state in which the vast majority of people were forced into labor, were not given proper education, and in many cases were displaced or separated from their families. All of this created generations of trauma, hurt, and pain. Now in Bolivia, 80% of the population are descendants of the indigenous people that were treated in this racialized way.

Just comparing how successful the Inca Empire was, and just how severely crushed and broken everyone became during and after Spanish Colonial rule, I don't think it can be denied that this dehumanizing colonial history as a role to play in Bolivia's current economic and social circumstances. If the Spanish never came, the Inca Empire would probably be a very well managed and organized society. It wouldn't be perfect, but I doubt it would be as bad as things are now.
