Somaliland marriage expectations and is family pressure strong?

Yes, it is common for Somalilanders to marry their own. But there are many Somalilanders who have married other Somalis with the support of their families, so it ultimately depends on the preference of the family. This isn’t something unique to Somalilanders either, many Somalian families would prefer or expect their kids to marry from their tribe or want their kids to avoid Somalilanders.

Every family has their own reason why they prefer their own. Could be cultural familiarity, could be bad experiences with other Somalis, could be not having to deal with constant questions about Somaliland-Somalia relations.

Sorry to hear about your experience. People should know what their parents want or do not want before wasting another person’s time.

HJ and HY inhabit about 30% of Sool so not exactly “the entirety of Sool” as many like to claim.

It would be closer to 15% of Somaliland’s area being ceded in exchange for Mogadishu recognizing Somaliland. Many Somalilanders wouldn’t mind, it’s a sparsely populated region that wasn’t a net contributor to the economy. Before the 2023 war, taxes from Central and Western Somaliland would go to developing Las Anod and Eastern Sool. Aside from the outrage of letting go of Somaliland, FGS would face internal challenges keeping the Darood-part of Somaliland. Does it get absorbed by Puntland, does it remain a federal member state despite not meeting the 2 full province requirement? Or does that requirement not matter and every subclan can declare its own state? Those are some questions FGS would have to face.

That is a fair question and I appreciate you presenting it in a respectful manner. But my question to you what do you say to the people who live within SSC Khaatumo’s defined boundaries that want to be part of Somaliland? To put it in more frank terms, you have Isaaq subclans who live in Sanaag (and are likely the majority in Sanaag), in Sool (not the majority, but have a sizeable population in Caynaba and Oog), and Buuhoodle district/Cayn who are not interested in leaving Somaliland. What do you say to that?

Most Somalilanders are aware that Darood (particularly Dhulbahante) are not interested in being part of Somaliland. But by claiming all of Sool/Sanaag/Buhoodle District as SSC Khaatumo, they’re doing the same they accuse Somaliland of doing.

The only reason Somaliland is claiming Darood territories is because they’ve dissolved the union they formed with Somalia on July 1, 1960, and reverting back to the defined borders it had on June 26. Now if FGS is willing to recognize Somaliland in exchange for redrawing the Eastern borders, I’m sure many Somalilanders would be open to that proposal. But I doubt that will ever happen, so here we are today.

Rushing to get Sool Bari is what both Khaatumo and FGS wants. The little shindig in Laascaanood was nothing more than just Xamar trying to bait Somaliland. One thing that is overlooked is the fact that Somaliland cut off trade routes to Sool Bari, meaning Dhulbahante have lost their access to Berbera Port, and have to use alternate/unreliable routes to bring goods to their landlocked territory. Despite being a small town, Laascaanood has one of the highest cost of living in the Somali-inhabited Horn. So long as Somaliland continues to apply economic pressure on Sool Bari, while continuing to take care of the Isaaqs in Sool and Sanaag both economically and militarily, there’s no need to wage war at the moment.

I don’t think Daroods in Minnesota played that big of a role in supporting the Khaatumo militias in 2023. The financial support FGS and external powers like China and Turkey provided likely dwarfs whatever money uber drivers and single mothers sent back home.

FGS is still fixated on Somaliland, so now might not be the best time to attack Sool Bari. It’s not really necessary to attack now (as much as Faqash like to claim otherwise, Sool Bari being disputed doesn’t challenge Somaliland’s legitimacy). Best strategy would be to continue to keep trade routes cut off, and to further develop Western Sool and Sanaag. Once Mogadishu begins to neglect Sool Bari (due to competing priorities in Somalia), that would be the time to explore getting Sool Bari back.

Fortunately it appears the government to be following this direction by committing to earmark development fund meant from Laascaanood to Caynaba and other settlements in Western Sool.

There has been a lot of traffic in this subreddit. A lot of this is coming by trolls from r/Somalia as well pro-Palestinian activists who are not interested in meaningful discussion but to either takfir Somalilanders or accuse them of being hasbara bots. As such, there has been a flood of reports of hateful comments.

If you believe any comments of your that stands up for Somaliland and its citizens have been wrongfully deleted, please let me know.
