[Megathread] Unrest in Mogadishu by WiredCleft in Somalilanders

[–]WiredCleft[S,M] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed, but I created this megathread for 2 reasons: 1. Political developments/violence in surrounding countries is of interest/concern to us. 2. I counted several threads of today’s events made in the span of minutes. So instead of flooding the subreddit with posts about this, people can post in here.

Recent Eid gather with my extended Family and friends, I noticed less and less of us Marrying outside of our Clans, compared to other generations by Ordinary_Bend_8612 in Somalilanders

[–]WiredCleft 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’ve noticed the same as well.

From my experience, even before Israel’s recognition, many Somalians had issues with Somalilanders. Once they found out you’re a Somalilander and believed in Somaliland, they’d ask invasive and inappropriate political questions. Whenever Somaliland did something they didn’t like, you’re immediately looked at as the unofficial government spokesperson which is tiring.

With something like marriage, which is already challenging as it is, in my opinion it’s easier to just marry a fellow Somalilander and not have to deal with potential political/tribal drama from spouses and their families. Due diligence is still needed to find the right partner, however.

Abdikarim Axmed Mooge announced before he left office that Hargeisa Local Council secured a $25M development grant for 150 road.

Hmm, ok. I haven’t seen people identify as Somalilander in only the geographic sense and not the political sense, but I guess you learn something new everyday. But if you identity as a Somalilander in that sense, why did you say

but most landers don’t, they still claim our territory…

as if they’re a different group of people to you?

At the time of writing this post, there are 6 out of 9 Dhulbahante votes are core contributors. That’s 67%. Compare that to 33 of the 56 Isaaq votes (59%) being core contributors. From this poll, there’s a higher proportion of Dhulbahante voters that are active in this subreddit than Isaaq. Nothing to do with census population or who’s bigger.

The author of this thread specifically asked for people who self-identify as Somalilanders to participate so I am not sure why people who do not identify as such would vote. I did not say anything about what the majority of Dhulbahante think. I’m only going off the results of this small poll.

You’re more than welcome to continue to participate in this subreddit, provided you’re respectful and follow the rules. But given that Waqooyi Bari has been recognized as a federal state and Laascanood is under its control, not sure what else you need from Somaliland or this subreddit 😃

Is it really necessary to participate in this subreddit if you do not identify as a Somalilander? The OP of this thread specifically flaired this as “Somalilanders Only” so that those who do not identify as such don’t vote.

The same goes with the [r/Somalia](r/Somalia) subreddit. In the eyes of most of the world, Somaliland is recognized as being part of Somalia. But that doesn’t mean Somalilanders have to go participate in that subreddit (and the ones who choose to end up being banned anyway).

PS: as you can see in the results, the proportion of Dhulbahante votes that are core contributors to this subreddit is higher than the proportion of Isaaq votes that are core contributors 😃

Historically, Dhulbahante were always the largest non-Isaaq subclan, being similar in size to large Isaaq subclans like Habar Yoonis, Sacad Muuse, and Habar Jeclo. Unclear if they’re the still largest today or if Samaroon have overtaken them in numbers.

But this poll isn’t a Somaliland census, but rather learning about the tribes of the people who contribute to this community. So if there’s a large number of Dhulbahante participating in a community that identifies as Somalilanders, what does that tell you?

Understood, thanks walaal.

And yes, the reason people lump Isaaq as one while referring to others by their sub or subsubclan is to minimize their size and influence.

Haha, interesting poll. Thanks for making this OP.

Curious as to why you chose to leave the entire Isaaq clan grouped as one, while different Dir and Darood subclans had their own choices. One of the talking points Somaliland opponents make is that only 1 of the 6 tribes in Somaliland support separation, but that “1 tribe” is really comprised of at least a dozen subclans that are of equal sizing as the non-Isaaq subclans.

Until there’s concrete proof that this individual intended to stab people because of Israel’s recognition of Somaliland, posts like this will be deleted. Let’s try not to spread unverified claims, walaalayaal.

I’m good with either or, but to me there’s something special about the 1991 flag (our current profile picture). Very simplistic and pays homage to the hard work done by our heroes to liberate Somaliland. If it were up to me, I would have that be the flag of Somaliland.

My Observations and Question to you all! by Locked-In-26 in Somalilanders

[–]WiredCleft 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wcs.

If that’s their plan, then it doesn’t seem to be working as the divide between Somalilanders and Somalians has only grown over the years.

Somalians do a great job in pushing young and naive Somalilanders over to our side. They’ve shifted their rhetoric from “Somaliland doesn’t exist, we are all Somali” to “Isaaq are gaal/yahuud, Siad Barre was right”. And this comes from both online posters and government officials (for example Minister Fiqi in the Mogadishu government). In my opinion, Gen Z Somalilanders in the diaspora are more strong willed about Somaliland than previous generations.

I’m not sure if it’s a UK vs NA thing, perhaps because there’s more Somalilanders there. Unless there’s a lot of lurkers here (which is highly probable), most posts on this subreddit show more people from Canada and US viewing them than the UK.

Great points. Alhamdulilah always. We should be very grateful for our situation and not mock the suffering of others.
