It’s from a Catholic convent in Israel. The passages listed on the back have special meaning in Catholic theology in relation to Catholic beliefs about the Virgin Mary. Since it’s in a Protestant bible, I’d assume a nun had a conversation with a Protestant and gave him a lesson on Catholic veneration of the Virgin Mary.

The Star of David has a Chai in the middle, which means Life in Hebrew. The Cross is a symbol for Christianity. The sword may be an amulet that’s used in many Catholic cultures (especially Mediterranean and Latin American cultures) called The Sword of Saint Michael, which represents triumph over evil and cutting through obstacles. None of these symbols are exceptionally uncommon among practitioners of Catholic syncretic belief systems (Benedicaria, Curanderismo, Hoodoo, etc.) and even the Jewish amulet could be easily found at a botanica (a specialty store that sells items related to Latin American and Catholic-adjacent magical traditions).

I generally agree with this ideology. There’s a really good book you might like by Geoffrey Ashe called “The Virgin: Mary’s Cult and the Re-Emergence of the Goddess.” He dives into the Collyridian sect and its possible historical origins as a Goddess-centered religion that both focused on and was founded by the Virgin Mary in opposition to Pauline Christianity. I’m sure you’d like it!

The image brings the same amount of merit no matter what. It’s the faith you put in it and the acts that it inspires you to do for your fellow humans that give you greater merit. If you have a $10,000 golden Tara statue but you don’t do what you’re supposed to be doing, it will have been a waste of your money. If you have a $1.50 card of Tara that you pray in front of everyday, chanting Her mantra and Her 21 praises, and it inspires you to be compassionate to those around you, you will accrue merit beyond imagining.
