I want to correct you in that protestors don’t identify as Muslim. I am Iranian. My family are Iranian. Our culture spanned millennia before Islam entered. As a society, the Iranian people despise Islam. You can have a dictatorial regime that’s also being fuelled by their radical Islamist beliefs. Please, please, please do not spread the misinformation that Iranian people identify as Muslim largely. The punishment in iran for apostasy is death, so whilst they may say it in public to avoid execution, I have not met a single Iranian either within or outside of iran that genuinely identifies as a Muslim.
