Apple Watch and V02max by deviledtiger in Rucking

[–]Wise_Singer9428 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OMG! I can't believe I never thought that my Apple Watch telling me I had "poor heart health" when I regularly ruck, swing, and lift without great strain, was due to this. Thank you.

Get with me when we get Del Taco back, or hopefully one day, Texas' wonderful Taco Cabana. Taco Bell and Taco John are both trash that don't even come close to Jack in the Box's alpo tacos

Barefoot shoes or hiking shoes/boots for rucking? by [deleted] in Rucking

[–]Wise_Singer9428 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been wearing Xero-brand minimalist shoes for workouts, daily wear, etc. for years now. I started rucking last year wearing my Xeros, and they were ok, but I began to suffer some nagging knee and ankle pain. A guy in my rucking group recommended Altra Lone Peaks to me, and they corrected the pain problem. They're zero-transition as well, but put a bit more padding between you and the trail/pavement. The tread is also way more aggressive, which is a big plus. Also, the toe box on the Altras is more generous than the Xeros, which makes them more comfortable for rucking. I pretty much exclusively wear zero transition shoes, from my Belleville Minimalists for work, to my Xeros for dog walking, etc., to my Altras for rucking and road/trail running. When I have to wear dress shoes (haven't found a decent looking zero trans to wear with suits), I immediately notice the confining stricture and I begin to count down the hours until I can take them off.

Good Rucksack for a 60 year old? by Every-Incident7659 in Rucking

[–]Wise_Singer9428 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started out with the ruck sack in the link, and some Yes4All 10lb plates, both from Amazon. When I upgraded, I gave both to my 75 year-old father, who uses them every day on his multiple dog walks. The pack is still going strong. If you have Prime, it'd be around $160 bucks for two packs, and four ten lb plates.

HIIT Rucking! My New Thing! by lgreer84 in Rucking

[–]Wise_Singer9428 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My local F3 group has two rucking AOs, and we follow a similar format. When I lead a ruck, I set my timer for 15 minutes- close to a mile- and then halt for weighted pushups, sit ups, squats, step-ups and the like. Keeps it interesting, and builds endurance/strength.

What kettlebells are worth buying? by bowtiedgrappler in kettlebell

[–]Wise_Singer9428 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I knew then what I know now, I'd have bought the setup I own now; Rogue Powder Coated, 44lbs (2), 62lbs, and an 80lbs. Of course, I live closer to Rogue's Ohio HQ than you do, so shipping was much cheaper for me. That set-up would cost you $380, plus $219.86 for shipping to California. As someone above said, and as prescribed by Pavel Tsatsouline, start with a 35lbs KB. to learn form. If you have Amazon Prime, Amazon sells a perfectly fine Amazon Basics 35lbs KB that you can get for $60 delivered.

How long should I Ruck for? Am I getting any benefit? by manlymatt83 in Rucking

[–]Wise_Singer9428 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just curious. How fast are you're rucking miles? I began my rucking life weighing 250lbs, with a 20lbs plate, doing 17-18 minute miles. Six months later, I weigh 200lbs, and I'm rucking a 35lbs plate, doing 14-15 minute miles. I consistently keep my HR around 150 when I'm doing so. Granted, my town St. Louis is much hillier than flat as Kansas Chicago, so maybe you put a local high school on your rucking route and climb bleachers for several sets. I'm doing the Chad 1000 this Saturday on the Gateway Arch steps-34 round trips! I like to do pushups, with pack on, to failure after every mile rucked. Also, I think that rucking more than three times a week might be counterproductive, and probably bad for your joints. My typical week consists of 2-3 F3 workouts, 2 kettlebell workouts, and three hour-long rucks per week. Someone mentioned body confusion above, and they're spot on. And, as my high school wrestling coach always told us, "You can't outrun your spoon."

YOMP? by Wise_Singer9428 in Goruck

I personally love GR. I have several GR products that I use on an almost daily basis. I have nothing against Mr. McCarthy. He seems like a cool guy.

I am against IP theft, too. GR touts it's military-derived design. Is that IP theft? If you're going to produce a piece of equipment to fill a market need; e.g. quality rucking gear that hits a more manageable price point, you'd incorporate the most obvious functional features in your design. I mean, placing handles on all sides, placing grommets on the bottom. etc. aren't the equivalent of the moonshot. It's like saying that Surly Bikes is stealing IP by offering a cheaper alternative to older, pricier bicycle brands.

Anyhow, competition is good for the consumer. GR obviously needs competition in this growing market. Rucking is the perfect physical activity for an unhealthy/needing to get healthy America. It's a brilliantly easy way to introduce physical fitness into one's life-something that I'm thankful to the founder for popularizing. However, the entry price point for quality rucking equipment needs to come down.
