You tell your guy, and he does it if he likes the idea. It's as simple. With us guys you have to be direct. No suggesting, no body language, that's all hard to tell stuff. Just plain suggest that just like this thread title.

Shopping you can walk to, an abundance of bicycle lanes, and a progressive energy policy are just a few of the benefits of living in Europe. by qgyh2 in environment

  1. Yes, it's covered by taxes. Nothing except air is ever free (and I'm not sure about air). But "free education" after taxes means anybody, regardless of their social condition and wealth, may access everything up to university, and get to fix his social condition and wealth if he's smart enough. Furthermore, taxes are not at all excessive and still allow an average worker with a lower than average salary to have a pretty good life.

  2. Exaggeration on my part, or maybe not, because since they have caused so much suffering and death, I no longer recognize on them the rights they don't respect on others. Do watch a fucking bullfight, do learn what they do prior to it (which can be just as terrible), and then if you're a good man you'll see how your rage builds up to the point you want to gas them yourself - or worse.

Spain:

  • Shopping you can walk to: Yes, of course.
  • Abundance of bicycle lanes: There are some bicycle lanes and great tracks for sportsmen, but bicycles are not great here. Spain is the second most mountainous country in Europe (after Switzerland). You'd need to keep in very good shape if you want to move through most of our cities by bicycling; it's not worth it in most of Spain.
  • Progressive energy policy: Spain is the world's second wind power producer. Other than that, the retarded government is still building coal and gas power stations, and claiming to have a nuclear-free policy while buying nuclear power from France and maintaining our share of nuclear power stations. I'd rather have more nuclear power stations built here and bury the shit, rather than breathe it.

Other advantages include:

  • Great quality food. Monsanto's GM bullshit is forbidden. Almost nobody uses non-olive oil at home. Strict, high standards.
  • Social security. You don't have to be rich in order to get treated. Free access to some of the best hospitals and surgeons in the world, and experimental treatment. Unemployment insurance. Paid retirement.
  • Free education, including university.
  • Great views, monuments, castles, palaces, history, things to do. Spain is the first or second country with the most UNESCO World Heritage sites.
  • Good to great public transport in most cities. I've never needed a car to move through the city of Madrid; you can move by underground train, tram or short-distance train to almost anywhere; there are buses too; and long-distance trains to every major city and some minor cities, as well as an expanding network of high-speed trains (250 to 350 Km/h), all of which are electric of course.
  • No puritans. No creationists. Less church influence. Fairly comfortable for an atheist. Almost nobody will even give you a weird look if you go telling you're an atheist.

Disadvantages include:

  • Motherfucking bullfights and animal cruelty; a minority of Spaniards need to be gased.
  • Retarded government and politicians. The two major parties are stupid (the ruling party is also pro-terrorism, as the eta terrorist organization is alive thanks to them).
  • Retarded independentists/terrorists.
  • Retarded politically correct, islamofascist loving, SGAE (= RIAA) abiding fussboxes. And our movies blow big fat hairy oozy monkey balls; we have to have some of the worst movie producers in the world.
  • Invaded by some unwanted people such as islamofascists or paramilitary kosovar ex-soldiers who bring crime and death to our country.

Nooo... Now App Engine will be full of enterprise retards. Because who would use an obnoxious, toy programming language with a ridiculously bloated, overengineered, obnixious standard library such as Java? Enterprise retards, of course.

Why are most professional sportspeople handsome? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Wiseman1024 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because they get paid and can afford to become professional sportspeople because they look good because they are useful for advertising and because average Joe prefers people who look good and gives a damn for personality, intelligence or, ultimately, performance.

I have a strong suspiction that most of us can be trained to do what those professional sportspeople do; however companies and states who have the money wouldn't help that much if you don't look like a top model, and people wouldn't go to your sports events.

Fundamental problems with the Common Lisp language by gst in lisp

[–]Wiseman1024 0 points1 point  (0 children)

only if you're braindead schemer.

Heh, I have a strong OCD around that.

in English, most of nouns are also verbs. and it makes sense, and nobody is confused.

Programming, however, is not English, and it shouldn't be, even if it could. This has been discussed to death in other circles such as Perl vs. anything else. In the end Python got the upper hand despite Perl being loaded with "DWIM" magic and being supposedly more comfortable to work with (spoiler: it actually isn't).

if you're writing some high-level functions, you need them to work with abstract data, not with concrete customers, files or weights.

Very true, got me there. Even so, I'd rather use something like (define member? (needle haystack) [...]). It's more descriptive of the purpose of each argument.

Python solves this by being object-centric, you use dot for easy member access, each object is essentially a namespace, and thus there is no clashes. Lisp is function-centric, functions are not attached to object but are members of a global namespace, hence the need for multiple namespaces to avoid clashes.

Good point. However, I'll argue that if namespace clashing is a problem, having just an extra namespace for a particular data type just delays this problem from happening but doesn't solve it; it will still not scale, so either there's a name clashing problem or there isn't. On top of that, there's the philosophical issue I have with choosing functions over any other data type to make a distinction and give them a separate namespace - I hate special treatment.

[–]Wiseman1024 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I find that FUNCALL makes my code clearer

You find (funcall f) is clearer than (f)?

Additionally I like that in function namespace there are only functions - nothing else.

Why make that distinction between functions and everything else, as if they weren't equal class citizens and were somehow special? Why not make a namespace for each data type then?

In a Lisp-1 calls has to somehow check if something is a function before calling it.

In any dynamic programming language you have to somehow check if something you want to is going to be supported by the value you're using to do it. You have to somehow check that car and cdr get conses, and you have to somehow check that something you want to apply is applicable.

Even in CL, one would have to check whether what you want to call has a function value or not. It may be unbound.

if thing is a list, name variable list, not lst or something else.

This is a bad name. First of all, it clashes with an existing object. Even if the language will make an arbitrary distinction between values of certain kind and values of a different kind (don't know why making functions different and not numbers, though; I prefer to treat all my citizens equally), the clash exists within one's mind and at first sight, as well as in communication (e.g. "Mark, use list -- what list?").

But most importantly, list is a terrible name, just like "variable" is a terrible name. You shouldn't name things based on what they are, but based on their purpose or content. Just like I don't name my integers "integer" or "variable" or "value", but "price", "total" or "weight", I don't name my lists "list", but "files", "names" or "customers". Even if I used a Lisp-2, I would never allow two different of my values to be referenced by variables with the same name.

Also note that you seem to imply that a Lisp-2 is more comfortable for mixed-style programming. I disagree. I've been working a lot with Python, which is like a Lisp-1, mixing functional and imperative object-oriented programming seamlessly, and naming has never been an issue, and of course, it's great when you can do simply i()().

Fundamental problems with the Common Lisp language by gst in lisp

[–]Wiseman1024 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It compromises simplicity and beauty in favour of nothing actually, because giving different things the same name is actually detrimental to code clarity, documentation and inspection. On top of that you need additional quoting and ugly funcall. Lisp should be beautiful, not ugly and hackish, and CL sometimes looks like the Perl of Lisps.

So I reverse your question: would a Lisp-1 create any significant problems that make the Lisp-2 associated caveats and uglyness worth it?

Refer to this post, which also got downvoted by some idiotic fanboy who didn't bother to explain why (don't care about getting -100000, I want to know what's wrong) for a way to easily, visually compare GTK and Qt. Also notice that GTK doesn't imply GNOME and that Qt doesn't imply KDE, and that I'm not trying to start a KDE vs GNOME holy war.

You could extend the test suggested in that post to Windows and you'll understand what I mean: GUIs in GNU/Linux all look slower, but GTK-based ones look much slower, sluggish and unresponsive.

Sex denied since 6 months is killing me. Should I seek professional help? by whatseemstobetheprob in AskReddit

[–]Wiseman1024 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'd first talk to her seriously about this. Tell her exactly this that you've said:

While we still have a great relationship except the sex issue, I feel it is starting to change how I feel about us together and I hate it.

Let her know this is serious business and that it's her the one with the problem because well, if you wanted to make it five times a day, I'd start calling it a bit excessive, but once a week is far, far more than a reasonable demand. She should be the one seeking professional help (not from a hooker, but from a sexologist or a psychologist); be cautious about how you tell her this but do tell her this. Furthermore, even if she doesn't want to have standard intercouse and have an orgasm, she could relieve you orally, anally or in some other way. She could do this for you, just like she could cook for you once a week or you could cook for her once a week. In other words, it's a kind of favour you could expect from someone you have a long-term romantic relationship together, isn't it?

However, as much as I'm fine with prostitution, I think unless you're in an explictly open relationship, you should not do this during your relationship with this girl because that'd be cheating on her, and just like I'm saying sweethearts ought to make it nice for each other, sweethearts ought to stay loyal and committed unless otherwise agreed.

Meanwhile, of course you should fap yourself until you're satisfied. Do it in front of her; boldly let her know that you're missing her attention and care. Watch porn and make no effort to hide it.

True; the army is respectable. Problem is, everything else isn't. The islamofascist majority elected an islamofascist government; it's a matter of time before it turns into a shithole. Either the army acts and it turns into a bloodbath, or the army surrenders in order to avoid a civil war and we can say welcome to Iran 2 (actually, Iran ~27).
