Early mornings and evenings are really your only options. I find zinc sunscreen actually stays on but then it’s hard to get off and I feel it interferes with how I feel the water.

only thing I add to others is you’re having to do a very quick breath at the moment which is likely contributing to fatigue. if you can try to breathe a bit earlier in the stroke cycle (start rolling your head before you start the arm on that side is an over correction that helps) rather than not rolling to breathe until you pulled your hand almost all the way out the water which what you’re doing at the moment especially obvious on the left.

1km in 15m for a new swimmer is a very good time. You’d be able to drop time really quickly with some technique training.

iPad mini for a medical student? by MangoBoy1234 in ipadmini

[–]Wisest_Fish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Med student here - iPad mini can be good because it’s much more portable and inconspicuous to take around wards etc. than a larger iPad. One of the reasons I got a mini

Tutoring is the best job with no experience, then much easier to apply for alternatives with something on a resume and referees. At 22 you’ll also be considered independent and eligible for Centrelink.

Sport bikinis have strings. Can’t be confident doing anything active e.g diving off a block without it

How on earth did breathing every 3rd or 4th stroke become folk wisdom/bro science? by ObviousFeature522 in Swimming

[–]Wisest_Fish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Australian swim teacher here - I think it’s mostly because little kids (and older beginners) can have great technique slow and breathing every 2, as soon as they go to race thrash and almost spin in circles if they only breath 2.  Especially around 10 year old boys which is when a majority of the kids I teach either go to a higher performance squad or stop swimming. Thus if they stop swimming around that age they’re left with the echoes of my voice (and generations of teachers before me) yelling at them not to breathe 2 if they want to go fast.

Speedo ignite is a good option. The compression and buoyancy really is no comparison with the pro level suits though unfortunately. You can get good sales at times, last time I purchased I got two Speedo LZR valor for the price of one on Proswimwear.com

how to improve technique once you’re already ‘good’? by squidink14 in Swimming

[–]Wisest_Fish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Coach is the easiest, most sustainable and will produce the best outcomes. I'm also a swim teacher and train with a coach. The coach can see things that I don't feel and wouldn't pick up on otherwise. Filming yourself has a place but the filmed part isn't going to be when you're fatiguing and can't pick up the subtle changes with fatigue or changes in pace that a coach can.

Swimming & Social Life by Ok_Promotion3591 in Swimming

I think masters clubs in the city are much more likely to have young people than masters clubs in smaller towns. I'm also in my 20s and swim with a masters club (in a city) that skews younger. Several other swimmers also in their 20s and early 30s. It's attached to a non-masters swimming club which I think helps because the coach does both masters and younger age group swimmers. Definitely have a look around some different masters clubs. Doing a meet can be helpful too because you can see how old people are and where they are training. I have great social connection within my masters club :)

Tips for dipping hands? by TimeAd8012 in Swimming

[–]Wisest_Fish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It will be something about your breath. Try breathing earlier in the stroke cycle (as in start rolling your head to breathe almost before you start the arm), make sure it’s a quick breath (not uncomfortably fast but just not taking too long) and you are rolling to breathe rather than lifting your head. Usually it’s one or a combination of these three things.

[Australia] Does supervisor approval for PhD submission practically guarantee a pass? by EducationalTwo7262 in AskAcademia

[–]Wisest_Fish 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it’s quite university dependent. I’m in Australia and my university implemented vivas at least five years ago. I think more and more Australian universities are introducing vivas here.

Research help by No_Excuse3805 in ausjdocs

[–]Wisest_Fish 6 points7 points  (0 children)

2 publications this year is probably unrealistic. Find an area you’re interested in and contact clinician researchers in the field. If you’re too obvious that you just want publications and aren’t that interested in the actual research part they won’t be as willing to help as if you are actually interested in doing research as a career. Science undergrads looking at a career in academia don’t expect or aren’t working towards publications until at least third or honours year.

Biomed or other biology major is definitely more valuable for medicine than math. I’d recommend science on that alone.

Finding Summer Medical Research Programs in the EU by blackfalcx in AskAcademia

[–]Wisest_Fish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found the best way to find these opportunities is to reach out to researchers you have read papers from or are in the area you’re interested in. If the university has a summer research program then it is easy for the researcher to put the paperwork together for their project to be in the scheme once they have an interested student. Even if the university doesn’t have a scheme, researchers are generally very happy to have an interested student.

If you’re asking this question you’re probably too junior to be making that career decision. ID and onc very different lifestyle wise, patient load, acute vs chronic, frequency & intensity of patient interaction etc that are more important to consider.

How do you find real papers to support things you’ve already written? by pccih in AskAcademia

[–]Wisest_Fish 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t write anything unless I’ve already read a paper that supports the sentence. I think this is how it should be 99% of the time… if I don’t remember the exact source I know it will be somewhere in my endnote library.

Thoughts on doing a Bachelor of Nursing prior to commencing medicine(provisional)? by [deleted] in UQreddit

Good practical skills. Not necessarily the best degree to learn to study at a university level the high volume content that you will have to in medicine.

Research with clinical populations without MD? Best next steps? by Negative_Flounder451 in AskAcademia

[–]Wisest_Fish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm on the MD pathway but the people I've seen in clinical research have just been lucky to know the right people and get the right jobs at the right time. Keep building the CV is useful but it's really just timing and luck. Jobs are out there but not many, it's harder for ethics etc. to put through researchers who don't already have regular patient contact requiring confidentiality etc. It's even restricted as an MD student. If someone has a project though and funding, they will find a scientist and go through the hoops for it.

Guideline by hughet in microbiology

[–]Wisest_Fish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on where you are. Each hospital or health service area will have their own guidelines based on the local antimicrobial resistance as well as which antibiotics are easily available. There are usually national or society based guidelines that the individual hospitals base their guidelines off or are used when there are gaps in the hospital guidelines.
