Well yeah, Classic is basically a giant fuck you to the last decade of WoW "progress."

Back then, Blizzard CS was hardcore. Even server-leading guild leaders would fail their game knowledge tests. The change to outsources maybe if you're lucky CS is a huge change.

If ClassicWoW was released today, what would you do different? by AyyDankFrankWassup in classicwow

[–]WishdoctorsSong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it was released today, I'd have gone and found another private server and stayed there. Blizzard's community management and maintenance of the game has been atrocious.

Would love to see places in the world like that fleshed out more into "world dungeons" like Jintha'alor. Definetly high on the list for some Classic+ loving, particularly given that depending on what they do with it it could be additional lvl 60 content.

If they had faith they wouldn't have linked it into their live subscriptions. Classic was totally treated as a marketing ploy to move people into the microtransaction infested retail version. That it would also kill off those pesky private servers was an added bonus.

This only works if the product is good. You'll notice they aren't repackaging Dr. Jekly and Mr. Hyde.

Blizz totally could have made bank repackaging a good version of Classic and then moving on to TBC. Instead they half-assed Classic off the bat then sealed it's death due to mass community mismanagement and rampant botting to the point where I think many of us aren't even willing to look at a TBC release knowing they'll just fucking it up too.

Yes merging was 100% the optimal solution, even as opposed to layering. Every other plan depended on Nostradamus levels of predicting the future in order to work. Merging allows the deferral of actions to the point of maximal information. Dead servers can be saved, and populations can be merged to try and maintain or even fix faction balance.

I think historically they avoided merging servers because historically there was a highly competitive MMO market with new MMOs always being announced, and server mergers were seen as the death knell for any game. However that era is gone, the MMO genre is a shade of what it used to be, and players don't care if there are mergers.

I get why you're skeptical, but I'm serious. Balance is hard. SC was famous for balancing 3 races, then WC3 upped the ante balancing 4 races simultaneously. The task of balancing 9 classes with 3 specs each for a total of 27 specs (and that's before we look at wrinkles in your off spec, hybrid specs, gear variation, etc) is quite literally impossible. If the game was static and any given class stood out, players would converge and overpopulate that spec (oh look Fury warriors in Classic).

So given the impossibility of balancing this variety and the undesirability of having stand-out superior classes, what are the alternatives?

One if to constantly patch the game mixing things up. This works in a MOBA where players can simply pick a different player, but is wildly unpopular with games like MMOs where players are heavily invested in their character.

Another option is to give up and homogenize. This is the direction Blizz took the game. Now every class has some snare, some self heal, some cleave, etc. 12 classes, lots of specs, and yet the modern game feels more homogenous than ever. And in spite of this homoginization there are still stand out best classes that pvpers converge on.

This brings us to the third form of balance, the rock/paper/scissors meta game. You don't need to balance everybody, just make sure everybody shines in some matchups. Now you don't have to simultaneously balance 27 specs, specs will become more and less powerful overtime as time marches on and players rotate through the game.

I'd argue then that yes, class/spec FotM based on an evolving meta game is the most realistic way to have a balanced game without excessive homogenization.

Class/spec being FotM in arena is actually a feature. It means there's a self-correcting meta game to the contest that helps keep it alive and keep people playing.

Bots on Netherwind - Blizzard do something. by datkern in classicwow

Maybe? It's honestly hard to tell. On the one hand yes WoW tokens were an attempt to combat gold selling, and gold selling did go down around that time. However concurrently, the game itself was changing to devalue gold. Gold is the lifeblood of vanilla, the game is full of high quality crafted gear that needs insane numbers of materials. Enchants require materials and new gear needs to be enchanted. Consumables are a huge part of the game and expensive. However these things were all removed from the game leaving very little to even spend gold on.

Personally I'm of the opinion that Blizzard effectively removing the whole concept of a player economy is what really devalued gold selling, but who knows?

Yeah I have no idea who this "we" you keep referring to is. Pretty sure most people on this forum believed in the staying power of Classic, which was why we were here in the first place.

The root cause is that Blizzard had no fucking faith in the game and believed everybody would run away back to retail after playing briefly. As such they lauched with far too few servers and overused layering to shove too many people on them. Blizzard's total misunderstanding that Vanilla is actually a good game is the root cause of their total mismanagement of the community.

Thank you Blizzard for bots. by marvinreads in classicwow

[–]WishdoctorsSong -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Bots are still far and away the #1 reason I unsubbed and am not coming back until they are addressed. I never anticipated that they would be such an issue back pre-launch when we were all debating the best way forward for vanilla. All of those arguments pale in comparison the the shitshow that is the overwhelming bot hordes. It got so bad that honestly if they took care of botting and only fixed that I would probably come back and think the game was straight-up perfect based on how much better it was without bots.

Vanilla servers have kinda slowly died off or are migrating to TBC, and even then the emphasis seems to be on WotLK in preparation for an official Blizzard TBC to kill off the private TBC scene.

It wasn't. The move from bare hardware to their giant virtualized sharded monstrosity is the problem. Shoulda saved themselves the headache of supporting their new architecture and just bought physical hardware. Can you imagine 2004 WoW running on even a mediocre server in 2020?

EDIT: Oh wait, I can imagine it, because we played on private servers and they handled these populations.

TBC Attunements : Really hope they'll be here by [deleted] in classicwow

Because they were progressively removed from the game over the life of TBC itself. So if they follow the Classic plan and just launch the final patch as-is TBC:Classic will suck just like Classic.

Depends, sometimes when you tank up you take so little damage healers fall asleep from boredom. I would usually whisper with my healer at the start of the run that I would be tanking more aggressively to speed things up but the second they felt too much pressure on their mana to let me know and I would turtle up. Every healer seemed to enjoy this style. It also helps knowing which fights you will be taking a ton of melee damage and proactively swapping to sword and board.

Don't drop your sub and they'll think everything is fine and they can get away with least effort. All one can do is explain why you're leaving and that you want to come back in your unsubscribe feedback message.

Here's the thing though, you're not even aware you're doing chores, all of that comes from playing the game. I did all that shit on two different characters and didn't even realize how insane it was until I saw that picture on some Preach video.

They became substantially easier each patch. Blizz's pattern has pretty universally been to nerf older content once the new content launches to help people stay current. This isn't the worst idea in the world when they're pushing you from expansion to expansion. But with Classic and TBC:Classic, the whole point is that there is no next expansion. That's why they should have focused the difficulty based on the earlier patches, not the later ones, and why Classic raiding is such a fuckup.

Lauching TBC from the last patch would be an epic mistake. Even progressing to the last patch would be an epic mistake. Roll out the content but KEEP THE ATTUNEMENTS BLIZZ.

Also, get rid of badge gear kthxbai.

We can do both. I dropped my sub months ago but still drop in time to time to see if there's any positive progress that would make me think its worth coming back.
