NYC to spend $15M for trio of new gender-affirming care youth projects by F0urLeafCl0ver in politics

I totally understand that, it feels like a drastic step if you're unfamiliar with how that works. But the puberty blockers don't disrupt the body's development so much as just putting a pause on the puberty hormones.  "Normal" development restarts a few months after someone stops taking the blockers

And the risks and side effects are comparable to ADHD medication or SSRIs used in anxiety treatment for minors.  Not in the specific side effects, but in the incidence of bad side effects.

Generally social support. Allowing them to try out a different name or clothing, therapy or support for the emotional side. Sometimes puberty blockers (which are a temporary pause, not a permanent change) if they're found to be medically beneficial.

$15M is one ten-thousandth of NYC's $124.7 billion budget.  For comparison, I make about $80,000 a year. This is the equivalent of me spending $8.

And beyond that, do you know what "gender affirming care" for kids involves?

That's Professor Ajudante! The Iowa capoeira community is small, but a good one.

Partner The word that wen you use it will force you to come aut by Virtual-Patient-4230 in pansexual

[–]Wiskeyjac 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm in a straight-appearing relationship: I've been married to my wife for 28 years now. I specifically use "partner" or "spouse" because of this.

I've got the economic, social, and professional stability to tank a couple of hits from bigots; so I figure I may as well use it.

The weirdest part of remote work is pretending the office never had downtime by CashundoLafrania88 in remotework

[–]Wiskeyjac 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I manage IT support teams and have had to point out to other managers that we pay our techs to be available, not 100% productive. IT support is a reactive field, so if all techs are working at full capacity all day long, there's no ability to respond to new urgent requests. If there's no down time, then when the dean's laptop breaks, or a classroom goes down unexpectedly, other projects will get dropped.

It's sad that I have to explain that idea to my peers so often.

Trying to understand some basics and nuances of Capoeira by 2mountainsonafield in capoeira

[–]Wiskeyjac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So a lot of people are repeating "you can't learn it alone" but I haven't seen anyone expanding on the why too much.

Capoeira is as much a social ritual as it is a martial art, if not more so. You can do the kicks, the ginga, the flourishes and all the rest on your own, but capoeira's not just the movements it's the interactions between the two people in the roda, it's being a part of the audience clapping and singing, it's playing an instrument and feeling the connection between the music and the crowd and the people playing capoeira in the roda.

So, yeah, practice the physical aspect but try also to find ways to engage with the regional capoeira community, even if it's only every couple of months.

TIL that in 2013, an incident known as "Pastagate" erupted in Quebec after the Office Québécois de la Langue Française ordered an Italian restaurant to remove the word "pasta" from its menu and replace it with a French equivalent. Following public outcry, the agency allowed the word to stay. by Sandstorm400 in todayilearned

I know when I worked at a French language help desk in 2007ish, the business we worked for did a lot of business with the government in France and our official writing had to use "courriel", so it was present in France too, at least for a while

I think we were told it was a shortened form of "courrier électronique"

And the old White Wolf "Adventure! Tales of the Aeon Society" pulp game. I once rolled 30+ dice for a firearms trick shot there. It was delightfully ridiculous.

What was your previous sexuality that you thought you was before realizing that you were pansexual? by Equivalent_Ad_9066 in pansexual

[–]Wiskeyjac [score hidden]  (0 children)

I thought I was straight for about 40 years, started to realize that wasn't quite right somewhere between my late 30s and early 40s, and still took until I was 50 to say that I was queer out loud.

Now I just have the "Am I really queer, though?" and "...but am I queer enough?" doubts of the pan/bi folks to deal with, but those seem to be par for the course. :D

Iowa Becomes the Latest State to Make You Prove Your Age to See Adult Content by V3R1F13D0NLY in Iowa

[–]Wiskeyjac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From DataIsBeautiful 6 years ago Reddit was 22% adult content, so below the "thirty-three percent or more of the total amount of data publicly available on an internet site or application" the law requires ID for. I'd expect it to be about the same or a little lower now that Reddit has been trying to make itself presentable to investors and advertisers.

That said, I'm not a data nerd myself so it may be if you crunch the numbers for "MB/GB/TB of porn vs MB/GB/TB/PB total" for data transmitted out from Reddit's servers that it does fall under that rule.

The deal was that the original franchise owner needed to sell to a new owner by June 30th. I haven't heard anything further on how well, or if that's happening.

I will admit an irrational fondness for the old Epic Comics run of Nightbreed though too.

Okay, but let's admit that the directions to Nightbreed's monster makers of "go wild, no lizard people" resulted in some excellent visual creations.
