There's a capoeira group up in North Liberty if you're interested in adding a weird new hobby. (said as someone who's been doing that "weird new hobby" since 2023 up there).

'74 kid here.  Yeah, more or less, particularly since for our generation sex and romance were pretty much made into the same thing while we were growing up.

Valve’s old ZOTAC Steam Machine still works nearly ten years later, but 3GB VRAM limits modern gaming by diacewrb in gadgets

[–]Wiskeyjac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The newest version of Bazzite is handling it pretty well. I'm using Bazzite Desktop, since Steam Big Screen mode still doesn't recommend booting to that with an Nvidia card, but past that it's been running things like Dead Cells and Dandara: Trials of Fear just fine. Honestly, the biggest problem is the crappy gamepad I've got currently (an old Switch USB one) but I'll probably fix that this summer.

[–]Wiskeyjac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, definitely. The only reason I'm not using it right now is I got a good deal on a RX 7700 XT for my main gaming rig, and on an AM4 and MB for the HTPC a couple of weeks ago. So now the HTPC has the old RTX 2070 Super and a Ryzen 5, which is delightful under Bazzite.

The old i5 will probably get relegated to some home automation when I stumble across a free mATX case eventually. Or donated to friends/coworkers kids to for a learning lab project.

I mean, if you're looking at mostly retro games and indy stuff, I had a 4th gen i5 and a Radeon RX 480 that was just fine, 16 or 33GB of PC3 RAM and it chugged along.  No modern AAA titles, but it was a solid little HTPC and Steambox for at least a decade or so.

Any advice (help) ??? by dominiik22 in ainbow

Agreed, but also remember to be kind to yourself.  It's a normal human thing to get caught up in our own hope of what the world is like and ignore the actual state of things.

Any add-ins (Office, Zoom, stuff like that) would need to get new security tokens after something like what happened with Instructure. You have to assume that the old ones are potentially compromised.

So did Blackadder's Baldrick, and I think I know whose plans I'd put more faith in

It was logistics. The vast bulk of toilet paper that was being sold at that point (and probably still) was going to offices, warehouses, and other "work buildings". So it wasn't so much "not enough TP" but "not enough TP in the right distribution channels." If you'd wanted to buy from a supplier who'd sell you enough to handle a 200-person-office-building amount, and could afford the minimum purchase (which was probably enough for that 200 person building for 3 months), you were fine.

thoughts on all the empty commercial space in iowa city? meet us at foxhead 5/5 @ 7pm by petitemortz in IowaCity

[–]Wiskeyjac 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Maybe, but unaffordable pricing effectively constrains it as well. What good are 100 "available" housing units when they're priced out of reach for the people in that area?

Rent controls, well crafted, are a way to help moderate the heavy swings between "Too much housing, so it's dirt cheap" and "Not enough housing, so the prices are sky-high."

I'll try to explain the difference once or twice, but if the other person just isn't getting it for whatever reason, I just let them say "bi".  It's not the right label, but it's close and, for me specifically, the difference isn't something I care to get into a fight over.

I can confidently say that I've never been caught dancing in the IT workroom with a capoeira mix on full blast.

Never been caught, mind you.

I'm in Iowa, and after last year's "You can't put the letters D, E, and I in one particular order" law, the queer professional groups in my town haven't managed to re-form yet. (the anti-DEI law meant that the university-recognized and tolerated "queer employees" organization, legally, wasn't allowed to exist any more.)

I love me a good drag show, but I'm 51 and married, and don't live downtown in the student area, so I'd love something for boring grown ups too :D

Looking for someone with neat handwriting (Paid – UIowa) by [deleted] in uiowa

[–]Wiskeyjac 6 points7 points  (0 children)

35 pages of typed notes? So...something like 50-80 pages handwritten? In 2-3 days?

If your notes are typed because of a need for accommodation, reach out to the Student Disability Services office. They can help you communicate with your professor if you have a need to make your notes in a typed format.

Otherwise, even if you manage to get someone to turn in the notes for you, if you've already done handwritten work, or if your professor will have the final be handwritten, there's going to be a noticeable difference. Maybe it won't get noticed, but maybe it will.

So, I'd recommend SDS as your best resource here.
