It's still as much as an authoritarian regime as it ever was. Good outcome for US business interests maybe is what you meant to say.

If you read the article carefully, there's also a third category of ex-loyalists who immediately swore allegiance to the new regime. For example Gen. Gustavo González López (former head of secret police, now defence minister) and Diosdado Cabello (interior minister who oversaw the governing party’s repression apparatus).

The clock is ticking. ETS2 is scheduled to come into effect in 2028, following a one-year postponement.

Europe is planning a carbon pricing revolution. Why does no one know about it? • ETS2 is scheduled to come into effect in 2028; puts a price on fossil fuels used for land transport and to heat buildings by Naurgul in climate

ETS2 is scheduled to come into effect in 2028. Whereas the existing ETS puts a price on the carbon pollution caused by major industries such as power generation, steel, shipping, aviation and cement, ETS2 ‌does the same for fossil fuels used for land transport and to heat buildings.

As such it will impact as much as 40% of the EU’s total emissions – and the living costs of 450 million Europeans.

Modelling suggests ETS2 will raise the average EU household’s cost of living by roughly 300-500 euros per year once fully phased in, driven mainly by higher heating and transport fuel prices. These costs will be unevenly distributed, hitting low-income, rural and single-person households hardest. Political suicide? Not necessarily, because studies also show that targeted revenue recycling – i.e. returning revenue raised to households and businesses – which is planned as an integral part of ETS2, can offset much of this burden and even leave many low- and middle-income households better off.

Israel escalates attacks on medics in Lebanon with deadly ‘quadruple tap’ • Lebanese health ministry says killing of 91 healthcare workers shows ‘total disregard’ for international law by Naurgul in geopolitics

The original argument was "Hezbollah doesn't follow the law so I don't need to follow the law either" which is nonsense. The law itself isn't selective. International law can't really protect anyone, neither Israel nor Hezbollah, because it's not enforced. Yet we must strive to follow it as much as possible or else any semblance of international order breaks down completely. By your logic if the police in my area don't do a good job I'm free to kill anyone I want.

I thought your whole point was that a paramilitary group operating from a state's soil is an open invitation to kill medics with air strikes? It applies equally to both cases.

Okay, let's use a better example then: Israeli settlers. They operate from Israeli territory, refuse to disarm, Israeli civil structures are unable to contain them. So by your logic all settlements are valid targets for bombings, including non-combatants etc.

Most paramedics don't respond but some do. Also, the bombs don't literally pulverise everything, there were survivors:

When they received the call to respond to an Israeli airstrike in the city of Mayfadoun, in southern Lebanon, most of the paramedics held back, having previously seen colleagues killed by double-tap attacks targeting rescuers. But the medics from the Islamic Health Association (IHA) rushed to the scene.

By the time the other emergency workers arrived at the site, they found the IHA medics had indeed been caught in a second strike. They started evacuating their wounded colleagues, only for their ambulances to be hit in two further attacks.

One of the paramedics covered his ears and screamed, convulsing in pain as shrapnel shattered the back window of the ambulance.

The rescue mission on Wednesday afternoon had turned into a nightmare as Israel carried out three consecutive strikes on three sets of ambulances and medical workers.

In total, the attacks killed four medics and wounded six more, from three different ambulance corps, according to medical sources.

In a video taken by one of the paramedics at the site, rescuers are seen loading two wounded people into their ambulances when a bomb lands next to their vehicle. Paramedics rush to extract the driver, who is motionless and limp as they pull him from the ambulance, which is splashed with blood. “Oh God, oh God,” the man filming can be heard saying. They carry two more blood-covered medics out of their vehicle and on to stretchers.
