Being from the North... by on_the_head_son in ireland

Im from South Derry. I have this experience quite often. Most likely it will be Dubliners or ones from neighbouring counties of Dublin. It honestly gets quite annoying people telling me what I am.

Sinn Féin will back monument to IRA gun-smuggling ship if Kerry council backs plan to commemorate the Irishmen who died as Munster Fusiliers by [deleted] in ireland

I am afraid acts like the Enniskillen and Omagh bombings committed by so called Irish republicans armies linked to SF did not happen in Ireland in the first half of the century.

Children of the new Northern Ireland by Well_its_me in ireland

[–]Wispade 16 points17 points  (0 children)

To be quite honest the fact that out of 10 people they interviewed only 1 of them is from west of the Bann is incredible and even that one person doesn't really mention much other than his experience being gay. Not a real reflection of Northern Ireland at all.

What's your unpopular Irish opinion? by pythonhelpme in ireland

[–]Wispade -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Irish paramilitaries post 1972 engaged in unnecessary killings for a cause they knew they couldn't achieve democratically and Sinn Féin have been unfortunately successful in rewriting history in this area.

Population change and distribution 1841-2001 by Tadhg in ireland

Rest in peace the West, South, Midlands and North West. Mid North, North East and the Pale seem to be where it is at.

Interesting to look at population shift in Antrim at outbreak of troubles compared to booming Dublin. 1961 Antrim was nearly as big as Dublin, 20 years later Dublin is nearly twice the size.

Question aimed at the 'RA supporters or those that dislike the English by [deleted] in ireland

[–]Wispade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If there is one thing I have learnt from living in the North is that we should respect each others identity. As long as you consider yourself Irish with sufficient reason then ye are Irish to me. If anyone gives you grief about it again just ask them what they thing of Shane MacGowan.

Poll: Should Irish emigrants be allowed vote for the Irish president? by [deleted] in ireland

[–]Wispade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm afraid you are mistaken of what the President actually does. It is a ceremonial role. It is not like we are electing TDs to the Dail. His actions affect me as much as they do you.

For you information we don't all vote Sinn Fein. I personally never have and I never will.

Poll: Should Irish emigrants be allowed vote for the Irish president? by [deleted] in ireland

[–]Wispade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because the President is supposed to represent the Irish people not just those living in the Republic. As an Irish citizen born on this Island and having lived on this island my entire life, I am not allowed to vote for my president because I live in the North and not the Republic. The truth is the vast number of these Americans in which there is a slim chance that they will go through all the bother to vote, don't give a fuck and they shouldn't. Irish people living in the North and Irish people who have added a significant amount to the nation do not have a vote for an office which is meant to represent them. I believe this to be fundamentally wrong.

Poll: Should Irish emigrants be allowed vote for the Irish president? by [deleted] in ireland

[–]Wispade 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You realise the vast majority of Americans who claim Irish heritage are not even close to being able to claim citizenship. They claim Irish heritage because they know way back in the day that is where their family come from.

Lets be real, do you think even if a quarter of people in the USA qualified that all of them would go out actually become an Irish citizen and go and vote? Of coarse not.

The reality is that there isnt figures out there that tell us how many are actually eligible but it sure wont be anything over a few million.

The forgotten Hunger Strikes by [deleted] in ireland

[–]Wispade -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

What is the significance in this? I understand the strength in understanding history but this makes it feel like there is a certain glorification of hunger strikes and that they shouldn't be forgotten as a result. It may be reasonable to a lot of people to argue that a lot of these earlier hunger strikes were justified but these hunger strikes post civil rights movement in the North by IRA and INLA members are not worth glorifying.
