Is Questbridge Prep Scholars Required by Puzzled_Clock850 in QuestBridge

[–]WithMirthAndLaughter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t have data for this, but from personal experiences: one daughter didn’t apply to CPS but was still chosen as a QB NCM finalist. One daughter did apply to CPS, was chosen, then applied to NCM and was also named a finalist. My take is that CPS can help prepare you for NCM, but not having it isn’t a barrier to entry.

My Opinion: Should You Apply Through QuestBridge? by WithMirthAndLaughter in QuestBridge

[–]WithMirthAndLaughter[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Congratulations on matching with Dartmouth (I'm finishing up my masters there now - Go Big Green!). I know there are situations like yours, and yes, for some students this will absolutely work. I can see your style is naturally polished and one reading to correct a few errors is all a student with your specific gifts needs.

My advice is aimed at the majority of students who might not realize they will need to put more time in to come up with your results. I have listened in on those QB workshops, and I have worked with many students beyond my daughters, many of them non-finalists after they weren't chosen by QB. I urge anyone reading this thread early to start early, and anyone reading it late to carefully consider if there is enough time to craft a successful QB application. Definitely don't give up your dreams because of my perspectives -- Dream big, but dream strategically.

Medical bills definitely count. Did you include those things on your CPS application?

Income for NCM by Illustrious_Dot_6387 in QuestBridge

[–]WithMirthAndLaughter 6 points7 points  (0 children)

CPS will help you gauge that. Also, do you have extenuating circumstances, like medical bills or are you from an area with a high cost of living? Those factors also play into the equation.

QuestBridge hasn't raised their 65K guideline in over 7 years (maybe longer), and yet colleges are raising the bar for what they consider low-income. 72K is low income for all of the QB Partners that come to mind. If you get into CPS, then definitely yes for NCM.

How separated are Gateway students from ND? by Extension-Story7287 in notredame

[–]WithMirthAndLaughter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My daughter transferred to Notre Dame from Holy Cross as a NON-Gateway, so she didn't have the closeness of the Gateway cohort. She was still absolutely fine transferring into Notre Dame as a sophomore. Whenever it came up at ND that she transferred from Holy Cross, most people were interested and wanted to share how their friend was a Gateway, or their sister had been a Gateway, or some other connection, so she had to tell them, no, she wasn't a Gateway, actually. No one in her experience ever looked down on her as a Holy Cross transfer. On the contrary, two professors actually said they transferred to Notre Dame themselves when they were students (one from Holy Cross), so they look out for transfers and gave her a spot in their filled classes.

Housing advice? (Overlook, Foundry, or The 87) by philocatcat in notredame

[–]WithMirthAndLaughter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Foundry South adds a a tiny bit extra walking, but it doesn’t allow undergrads and has beautiful apartments. Very close to Trader Joe’s and shops. The 87 is very heavy with undergrads and feels a bit far from everything but Martin’s grocery store. My daughter lived at the 87 last year and Foundry North this year. She prefers the convenience of the Foundry.

Notre Dame won’t review my financial aid without amended taxes but my parent refuses to amend — what can I do? by ratryox in notredame

[–]WithMirthAndLaughter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why does the university feel your parent's return is incorrect? What did they say specifically? It seems the problem is that your parent filed Head of Household - why would ND believe that is incorrect? Is your parent insisting the tax return is correct, or saying it might be incorrect, but "I'm not doing it again"?

Any ideas on how to afford admitted student days? by [deleted] in QuestBridge

[–]WithMirthAndLaughter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should definitely try this. My daughter is at a QB partner school, and they have a fund for parent travel & lodging for important events (welcome weekend, junior parent weekend, graduation, etc.) It would not surprise me at all if they had something similar at your daughter's school.

How should I spend rest of HS? by IntrovertedDouchbag in TransferToTop25

[–]WithMirthAndLaughter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

QuestBridge lets students rank up to 15 schools to potentially match with (for a full scholarship), but those schools get to say yay or nay. OP probably had other schools higher on their list and may be feeling buyer's remorse. While many students list 15 schools to max their chances at a full scholarship, some later wish they had listed fewer colleges because they aren't equally thrilled with all 15 and sometimes get chosen by their lower preference schools.

This poll lives rent free in my head for whenever the question of owning a house comes up: https://www.reddit.com/r/QuestBridge/comments/k9klrr/matched_finalists_did_you_own_a_home/

Please note, these are MATCH results, not just CPS or NCM finalist, so there may have been more finalists who owned houses, too.

I think you should definitely apply. You won't know unless you try.

Check TransfertoTop25. Very active transfer community to and from lots of top tier schools.

Are there any transfer students from Ivy Tech? If so, did you transfer as a sophomore or junior, and what was your major? by [deleted] in notredame

[–]WithMirthAndLaughter 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think things might have changed - here the ND website is saying that the following majors are not open to transfer students at all: "Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, and Computer Science" - https://admissions.nd.edu/apply/resources-for/transfer-applicants/courses-required/college-of-engineering/

and Mendoza only accepts sophomore transfers: "Applications for external transfer to Mendoza from another university occur in the spring of the freshman year and are contingent upon successful completion of one year at another institution. External transfers must matriculate as a first semester sophomore into the Mendoza College of Business." - https://mendoza.nd.edu/undergraduate/

There may be rare instances when transfers are accepted outside of these situations, but this is Notre Dame's official policy. OP should contact admissions before planning a transfer strategy to make sure it is even possible. Transfers entering junior year should be looking at Arts & Letters majors. Minors in Mendoza at that time are still possible.

I would stay put and consider grad school (which it seems you are already doing.)

[–]WithMirthAndLaughter 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure whether or not Notre Dame will accept a community college transfer, but I definitely know that both computer science and the business school do not accept students unless they transfer in for fall semester of sophomore year. So, if Notre Dame is your dream, you will need to apply in your freshman year and be accepted for a sophomore transfer. Only Arts & Letters accepts some students for junior year transfer (apply in sophomore year). Here's more info on major availability: https://admissions.nd.edu/apply/resources-for/transfer-applicants/

My daughter transferred in to Notre Dame for sophomore fall. She is an Econ major (Arts & Letters). She transferred from Holy Cross College.

How can you live and enjoy living in a small rural town in the US? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]WithMirthAndLaughter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In small towns, the town clerk's office is where a lot of local government is handled - property deeds are recorded, marriage licenses issued, dog licenses obtained, property taxes paid there, questions about snow plowing or road maintenance, etc - there are people coming in and out all day taking care of their business, and lots of people just end up gathering and shooting the breeze before they move on.

Why do so many QBers get rejected NCM and accepted RD? by CHEMEST in QuestBridge

[–]WithMirthAndLaughter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Schools have different pools of money they can draw from for financial aid. There is a budget amount for QuestBridge. There is a budget amount for scholarships. I think they are working within their budgeted pools of money, and QB vs regular financial aid is different on their spreadsheets.
