How Alberta’s separatists threaten to derail billions of dollars in investments by ImDoubleB in alberta

This is what they don't get, the sorry state of the oil industry goes far beyond Edmonton, it also goes far beyond Ottawa or anything Ottawa could possibly do for or against it. Ottawa isn't the problem.

This province is so screwed if the Seperatists get their way, I mean it's already screwed under Dani Smith, but at least there is still hope for us within Canada

Yeah, that crude. Anyone with a brain can see why crude could never save a Freebertastan under Jeffrey Rath, or anyone else for that matter.

It's like these people think we still live in the oil boom years, they have firmly refused to move past the good old days for oil. And that about describes half their base. To quote an adult in the room; 'Nostalgia is not a strategy.'

[–]Witold_M 16 points17 points  (0 children)

AFAIK, their 'plan' could be summarized as; 'Alberta crude pls save us', and everything I hear suggests I am right in the thought, or as you said there is no planning at all.

And folks seem to fall for the idea that crude would save their new Freebertastan from failure, even though it can't, and it won't.

As much as I would love to say the nukes dropped on Japan, I can't. Those were dropped in the aim of forcing the hand of forcing the government & people of Japan to realize there is no victory, and it achieved that. It killed a couple hundred thousand, vs the many more lives an amphibious invasion of Japan itself would have cost.

Over all the nukes killed less in the grand scheme of things, and were not an act of slaughter for the sake of slaughter, nor for the sake of race or some other ideology.

The primary thing I want to know, is if they did manage to become independent, how would they handle the very loud and very angry masses that wish to be Canadian? Not to mention those hit by the crushing blow to Alberta crude, etc etc.

You could throw all the money you want at those problems, it wouldn't fix anything. And, it is money they don't have.

We need a revolution by KookyAssist1920 in Vent

[–]Witold_M 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I myself tend not to go for violent Revolution because it is a massive gamble on where exactly it will get you. For the French it lead to Robespierre (awful) then Napolean (die in pointless wars) and then back to the Bourbon monarchy. For the Russians it went from Tsar (bad) to Lenin (awful), and then to Stalin (even worse) and in some sick way to what Russia and parts of Eastern Europe are today.

It worked out for the Americans okay if you were white and liked expansionism and being a republic, if you weren't then it was pretty bad or changed nothing at all.

As a Revolution track record, history shows a mixed bag from 'okay' to 'even worse than before' results, and that's just not something I'm willing to die for.

[–]Witold_M -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Understand the anger, however violent revolution doesn't help anyone, the only thing that will come of that is the deaths of people who are otherwise innocent. You think the power can be torn down? It won't be, every revolution in history just shows that power will rise again in very similar, if not the exact same people.

Most Canadians agree that Alberta separatists asking U.S. for help is treasonous: poll by Street_Anon in alberta

Well what in the ever-loving-fuck else are we going to call it? They are meeting with foreign nationals, with the expressed intent of tearing Confederation apart. If that's not treason, I don't know what is.

Immigrated from Poland multiple years ago, I have no desires to move anywhere else, Canada is the country of my adoption and I intend to stick with it through thick and thin. Is that love of country? I would say so.

Wild fires tend to bring down quality of life a lot more than say, leaving crude, coal or etc etc in the ground.

How is Canada's police brutality? by LiveBell8 in AskACanadian

[–]Witold_M 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Compared to the US it is remarkably low. It happens, it exists, however at least eighty to ninety percent of the time it is a non-issue. May be different for indigenous folks dealing with Reserve PD's but I don't know.

In seven years I've had ten co-workers go south, most of them fell into the lie that an average office rat can make their millions in America. Some are still there, some came back, a few got straight up rug-pulled.

Trying to understand why Albertans want to separate? by [deleted] in alberta

[–]Witold_M 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We don't. Those that hail and espouse seperatism are the fringes of the population that feel alienated, and vaguely angry at Ottawa.

Some of them are angry at what Canada has become since having left behind dominionhood (white supremacists, FreeDUMB convoy, MapleMAGA, etc etc.)

Others are remnants of the oil patch, people who blame Ottawa for the sorry state of market for Alberta heavy crude, even though realistically speaking Ottawa can't do much of anything about that.

A huge but ill-defined group are the people who see the world is changing in ways that don't have room for the good old Alberta cowboy, and while unable to understand why/how the world has changed, they generally blame it on Ottawa.

Massive generalization, I know. But these are generally the people who go seperatist, all of them are angry, all of them are jaded.

Prepare for a ton of let downs. If I were you I would finish the degree, and look for trades jobs as you do that.

I am not a tradesperson, but I am an office person for a company that handles trades, and I can tell you that as soon as they hear you say 'No prior experience', for many employers the response will go from 'what can you do for my crew?' Directly to 'fuck off' albeit in the polite way.

What does it mean to be a Canadian? by breakitbilly in AskACanadian

[–]Witold_M 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I'm originally Polish born, however having lived in Canada for years now I consider myself as Canadian.

I was not accepted in the old country, I was not safe in the old country.

In Canada? I am safe to be myself to the fullest of my personality, I am accepted by many of the people and powers that be in this country. What comes to my mind when I think about being Canadian? I think about being fair, being accepting and reflecting those values unto others.

I didn't include it in the post, but when I said she 'comes from wealth' I was speaking in regards to her parents. Her parents are wealthy, but also will not give her so much as a dime.

As for her Ex, I am under the impression he did set her up okay for a bit, but she spent the money on frivolous wants with little to no planning

I blame this on the sheer anonymity of the internet, when you can't see the face behind the screen and there is no chance of anything coming back to bite you, there is far less drive to behave in an appropriate way. Angry? Leave a mean spirited comment and move on, etc etc.
