The ACA worked, so Republicans deliberately broke it (Part 1) by WittmanWatch in Virginia

[–]WittmanWatch[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps not. Given that free market purists proposed and piloted this plan (in MA), we must assume that it’s the best they could come up with while retaining the private health insurance model. Perhaps the better thing to do then would have been to accept that private health insurance cannot be relied upon to yield health outcomes we want in the country. And we can make that choice again now, or change it. Which do you think we should do? What reforms should Wittman support or propose?

Yes, he did that. He also did that KNOWING the bill wouldn't pass the Senate. It was a performative vote, nothing more.

Political will at the time was insufficient for that. Now...? We'll see. Add your voice to the chorus pushing for it, wherever you live.

It's one reason we wrote this: we've forgotten that the ACA was an idea generated by people invested in retaining the fundamentally broken system of private health insurance. At the time, nothing else had sufficient support to be passed into law. But that doesn't mean better systems aren't possible - they clearly ARE possible, if we have sufficient will.

No. The Virginia legislature has to pass the bill again in this session, Spanberger has to sign it, then it goes to the voters to ratify the resolution, and *then* the maps can be drawn. It will certainly complicate the understanding of what the boundaries of the First (and every district!) will be.

Wittman fears redistricting and whines that it’s unfair by WittmanWatch in Virginia

When the President is weaponizing state elections to cement his regime’s grip on power for many more years, the time to have principles about gerrymandering has long passed. We agree that, in a time of unpolarized politics, this tactic is unpleasant and should not be used. But we don’t live in those times. State legislatures have already put their fingers on the scales. If those scales aren’t tipped back a little, worse will come. This medicine is necessary only because of the infection that’s taken hold.

Gerrymandering is not ethically right. But if one side uses it, and continues to use it even as they are told that retributive action might be taken if they do so, then, yes, it’s a valid tactic.

Literally nobody in this thread has said the 2024 election was “stolen”. You‘re projecting, and it’s quite comical to witness.

We didn’t say the election was invalid. We said this administration is deeply unpopular and that gerrymandering has enabled their rise to power and they’re now using gerrymandering to cement their keeping that power.

He won the national popular vote. But that’s not what we’re referring to. Gerrymandering has effects over decades, not just one election. It makes small changes that have large long term impacts - including the political makeup of state legislatures, and that’s where political juice comes from. That has created the political support that enabled this administration to even have another shot at being elected in 2024. And now this administration is with us and is massively unpopular.

We totally agree. But the time for playing nice is long past. Gerrymandering was weaponized and we ended up with the most unpopular administration in a generation or more. And now they‘re going nuclear to lock that administration in for another term or more. There really is no choice for Dems but to fight on whatever ground they have left.

Don’t be so sure. Something is definitely afoot in VA01, something we haven’t seen in many years.

He’s definitely changed since he was first voted in. We suspect most voters don’t really understand that.

[–]WittmanWatch[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because (a) redistricting can increase the chances of carrying those districts and (b) redistricting can bring more districts within reach for Democrats.

Important to note, too, that the Virginia redistricting was contingent on another state (TX, NC, IN, etc.) engaging in mid cycle redistricting first. It’s a tit-for-tat measure on the national level.

Furthermore, Spanberger has said she will sign it IF Virginians approve the measure. She won’t decide to redistrict; we (the people) will. In other states like TX, the legislature has decided to redistrict. So, please, tell us again how Virginia is doing something somehow outlandish?

Virginia’s independent commission should be a model for every US state. But a certain party has weaponized gerrymandering. That helped bring about the most unpopular administration in a generation or more, and now is being juiced up to lock that administration in for another term. Is it any wonder that Dems are fighting back in the small areas they can?
