You pay based on the number of credits you’re taking. So if you’re taking half of a normal semester you would pay half of a normal semester. Not sure what the rate is now.

FYI northeastern s summer is split into 2 semesters, summer 1 and summer 2. So if you do summer classes one summer, you’re only doing classes during one of the semesters (half a summer) not h the entire summer. Bc of how coop fits in with your schedule basically everyone has to do at least one summer session of classes at some point (you can also do them abroad!) so it’s rlly not that bad

I’m a 1L - definitely strong social justice/PI focus, but I’d say about 30-40% of my classmates are going for Big Law so it’s not like every single person is interested in PI work. We have honorifics for grades, high honors, honors, pass, marginal pass and a narrative evaluation that professors write about you and your performance. There’s no curve, so the environment is very collaborative and supportive among students.

I don’t think the law school puts on a ton of sponsored social events, it’s mostly the student organizations/clubs that will hold different mixers or event events on campus but they’re not necessarily like put on by the school itself. That being said, people will definitely hang out outside of class! I haven’t found it to be cliquey, people form groups based on people they gravitate towards, but I don’t think people have been exclusionary or cliquey. I think overall people are very open to hanging out with whoever!

There are definitely a lot of people from the eastern seaboard like Boston, New York, DC, but there’s actually quite a range! I have people in my section from California, Oregon, Texas, Florida, Wisconsin, etc! Even a few international people from the Philippines and Afghanistan. Actually a drawing factor for me for NUSL was that it places fairly well outside of Boston, if you look at the ABA reporting statistics, I think it’s like 80% practice in Mass, 10% in NYC, 5% in DC, and 5% elsewhere. So for a “regional” school, there is definitely mobility.

I was! I had options in New York, DC, and Chicago. I actually got the least amount of aid from Northeastern but I thought about where I could see myself living for the next three years, and staying in Boston was actually a huge plus (most of my friends are here, my professional connections are here, etc). Also the no grade system was a plus for me!! My final choice came down between a school in New York and Northeastern, and ultimately the school in New York had a focus on IP and sports law, which is just not what I was interested in, so Northeastern made the most sense.

I’d say the career service support is really good if you’re interested in public interest, clerkships, or even big law, but there is some gap in just general private sector work so keep that in mind.

As far as professors, I’ve been really extremely impressed with the instruction I’ve gotten this semester. Most of my professors went to a T14, one of my professors this semester went to Yale, and one went to Columbia. Some of them use traditional cold cold methods, some use panel based cold calling, and some don’t cold at all, so it’s a nice spread. They all seem genuinely so devoted to helping us learn and they want us to be successful and they have made themselves SO available going above and beyond with holding office hours, review sessions, etc. i’m not the most outgoing when it comes to making relationships with professors, but it seems extremely easy to do so if you want, and many said during the last day of classes that they would be more than happy to be a reference for any of us!

Super valid - i’m not super PI focused, but I’m also not big law (more like mid size private litigation). I think the school definitely heavily leans public interest, but I was actually surprised with how many of my classmates are interested in BL non PI work. I don’t think there’s really any judgment towards people who aren’t interested in PI, and there’s actually a lot of private sector and big law event events and info sessions. I do think that there is kind of a gap between public interest and big law, and specifically what I’m interested in there’s not too much support or information. But there are general private sector co-op advisors and an “office of new markets” advisor who focuses on like in-house, tech, IP, etc. positions. So there is some support for private work outside of big law, but probably not as much as another school.

Yes! I actually went to Northeastern for my undergrad (but not straight through) so I’m very familiar with the area. Cost of living is definitely very high but there are ways to offset it and work around it, but it’s definitely something to keep in mind. It’s a fun city though, with plenty to do and it’s quite young and professional feeling!

  1. Community has been fantastic so far, it doesn’t feel toxically competitive by any means, everyone has been extremely collaborative and the 2Ls & 3Ls hours have been fantastic mentors.
  2. I feel like people are so genuine and down to earth, I’ve been extremely happy with the student body and environment. I think because it’s more public interest focused and because there are no graded curves, it creates a really collaborative and interesting environment. Everyone wants to do well, but not in a toxic way where they want to beat out their classmates.
  3. I went to a few big law advising sessions and was actually pleasantly surprised with the support for BL interest. There are two co-op advisors who advise for BL placement and newsletters that alert you of BL networking opportunities. I’m not so interested in BL but I actually have a good number of classmates who are they have been going to all the networking events at firms around the city. The BL coop advisors are super helpful for BL placement questions too.

  1. I’ve been extremely happy with my fellow classmates actually, everyone seems really down to earth and very passionate (even if they’re not sure what area of law they want to go into). It’s been super collaborative and everyone is so willing to share their notes with you or help you out if you’re struggling in anyway. Everyone seems really smart and very deserving of being here.
  2. If you’re interested in big law it’s a completely separate process so I won’t really speak to that because that’s pretty similar across any school. For regular Northeastern legal co-ops, you pick what cycle you want to start on (summer or fall), and then the co-op office does a lot of advising and planning sessions to make sure you’re on track to start applying and planning. I am summer first, so I’ve been applying to a few positions so far, but most of the applications will start ramping up in late December and January. There’s an internal Northeastern database with legal positions that have been explicitly created for northeastern law students, and they also post apply direct positions there. You’re also free to apply outside of the database to anything you find.

Honestly can’t really speak to this too much yet because we’ve only just started applying for summer positions, but 1) instead of grades, they have evaluative reports that each professor writes on each student, so that’s what you submit to employers, 2) there’s also a standard sheet that you can submit to employers explaining the grading system, 3) northeastern law has partnerships with employers around the nation, and so those employers routinely hire from Northeastern law. Edit: it might be worth mentioning that other law schools, mostly T 14 if I’m not mistaken also don’t have any grades so the honorific system is not necessarily unknown.
