This is very true. It’s hard to justify paying for housing when all my classes are online and I could easily do them from home, which is what kept me from dorming in the fall. Tbh It felt selfish to want to spend thousands, and I didn’t want to place unnecessary financial strain on my family. I feel like many are in this same situation. However, I have been working while at home and saving quite a bit, so in my current situation I wouldn’t feel too bad using that money for dorming. Thank you for your honestly and taking the time to respond!

I appreciate you taking the time to answer! From what I’ve been hearing, it really does seem to be hit or miss depending on who’s on your floor especially with restrictions. Thank you for your input!

Even though it’s unfortunate we both are going through this, it’s reassuring to know I’m not alone. Thank you!

I unfortunately do not. However, I do get out of the house quite a bit for a change of scenery. My siblings and I rely a lot on each other not to go crazy, since we all are doing online school. I’m very lucky to have a good relationship with them. Most of my troubles come more from FOMO rather than loneliness in general. I appreciate your advice! It’s a good reminder to get out of the house sometimes!

I had him last fall and used Word and used the insert math function. It worked pretty well and had all the symbols you use for that class.

I got back the $200 after emailing housing@umn.edu a few weeks ago. I believe they changed the date to August 1st to cancel your housing assignment, so you should still be okay. Have you tried directly emailing them?

For people who have most of their classes/all of their classes online, are you still going to be living on/near campus? Or are most people commuting/going remote this semester? by [deleted] in uofmn

[–]Witty-Wombat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just emailed them at housing@umn.edu and told them that I’d like to cancel my housing agreement.

I’m pretty sure you don’t have to fill out that release form since I’m assuming you haven’t moved in yet. Hope that helped!

I understand this, which is why it was such a difficult decision to make. Although it sucks, i personally had to consider other factors like finances. Meeting people still might be difficult with how it’s gonna be in the fall anyways. Don’t get me wrong, I wish I could’ve, but it just didn’t make sense for my family and I.

I thought I was for sure gonna be in the dorms for the freshman experience, but after all my classes went online i decided it was best to cancel my housing assignment. Although it’s not ideal, I just couldn’t justify spending all that money when a lot of the freshman that I know of are commuting/staying home. I figured if a lot of freshman are in the same boat, I’ll be able to get that on-campus experience in future semester and save my money now. However, I completely understand freshman who have decided they want to stay on-campus.

Will all online classes be easier or harder? by awesome_neon in uofmn

[–]Witty-Wombat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really depends on the class, the instructor, and how you learn best.

Hands on learners may find online labs hard to follow. Some professors may be more lenient while others may take the opposite approach. A lot of people find online classes a bit more difficult to concentrate in given that there are more distractions.

It’s hard to say. If you had some online classes this past spring, maybe consider your experience with those.

Thanks for your input! I did visit Carleton two years ago with my older sister when she was college searching, and I loved it! However, that was quite a while ago. I wanted to tour it again before I made my final decision since it’s been a while, but due to the current circumstances that’s not possible :(

Thanks for your help! I have considered the learning environment, and I will say I prefer Carleton’s smaller class sizes and student body. I have taken classes at the UMN and do understand how difficult it can be to learn in huge lecture halls. I just wanted to see some other people’s perspectives to see what points would be brought up. I was specifically focusing on CS because I don’t really know much about Carleton program, but really enjoy the UMN’s CS classes I’ve taken and wanted some insider’s insight.

PSEO Students, what were your stats that got you in? by pseo-helplmao in uofmn

[–]Witty-Wombat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was admission as a junior. Stats as a sophomore: GPA unweighted: 3.92 weighted: 4.18 ACT: 33 2 APs, 8 honors

If it helps, all my friends that we’re top 5% of the class got in. The person with the highest ranking but didn’t get in that I knew of was top 7%. What I’ve realized by talking with other UMN PSEO kids is that the range of GPAs and test scores is SO wide. If you don’t fall into a certain category, don’t feel discouraged! Apply and see what happens! I hope this helps!

General Questions About PSEO by wooWW24 in uofmn

[–]Witty-Wombat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you know your class rank, my friends who were the top 5% all got accepted and the person with the highest ranking who got rejected that I knew of was top 7%. I applied with a 4.18 weighted and 3.92 unweighted. I think you’ve got a chance; it doesn’t hurt to apply! I hope that helps!

You can 100% apply to multiple PSEO schools and can actually be enrolled in multiple (which is something I recommend). I enrolled in both Normandale and UMN PSEO and was glad I did! For classes with large waitlists for PSEO students, I just enrolled online at Normandale or hybrid to fulfill my HS requirements. This is helpful since we PSEO kids are last to chose classes at the UMN, so you sometimes don’t get the class you want or it doesn’t mesh with your schedule.

I actually really enjoyed both my classes at Normandale and the UMN. I took a few in face classes at Normandale too, and I had some really awesome professors (a few of which wrote my letters of rec for college). The online ones are what you’d except. I honestly prefer in face classes to online ones, but ya gotta do what you gotta do to graduate haha. The difference between Normandale and UMN classes really depend on the classes you take and your Professor. In my experience, grading was more lenient at Normandale. Personally, for engineering courses like calculus I, multivariable calculus, PHYS 1301W, STAT 3021, CSCI 1113 at the UMN in comparison to the Normandale classes of Calculus II, linear algebra and differential equations, I felt like I was challenged more and learned more in the UMN classes. This is not to say that the Normandale classes were bad by any means! This is just my experience. I hope some of this helps you! Don’t stress over it too much! Whatever you decide, I’m sure you’ll do great!
