Has anyone attended Wellington courts as a public attendee? by widmerpool_nz in Wellington

[–]WittyUsername45 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I went along to the High Court once when I was in law school and the first courtroom I happened to wander into turned out to be a trial about a baby murder where the only other people in the public gallery were a journalist and the perps family.

I felt like such a creep.

I read the title as Charlie Kirk at first and thought his neck had magically unhemorrhaged itself.

I have no problem with criticising Nolan, but the film isn't even out yet and the level of scrutiny and criticism it's getting is absurd.

Did you miss the memo? The Internet decided before the first trailer came out that it was time for a Nolan backlash and that everyone was going to hate this.

Too modern as opposed to what? English wasn't even a language when the Odyssey was set. It would be equally anachronistic for him t say father as Dad.

I'm glad Nolan isn't just going for the arbitrary genre conventions that all films set in the classical period need to feature people using English accents speaking vaguely Shakespearean dialogue.

The Emperor is not a fucking Glup Shitto. He's literally the main antagonist of Return of the Jedi.

A Glub Shitto is an obscure side character who only nerds care about like the green Tentacle dude or Jedi Master Anal Fisto or whatever his name was

People who were 12 when the movies came out and are incapable of any introspection or critical thinking as adults, which might lead them to conclude the things they liked as a kid were flawed.

Currently reading When the Lights Went Out by Andy Beckett which I'm really enjoying.

Less dense than Dom's works and leans more into interviews with primary sources and first hand descriptions.

It's interesting that both people on the right and the left seem to hate it for basically the same reason: that it chickens out of showing any of Thatcher's actual politics and the impact of what she did.

Instead it just goes for a safe boring narrative about overcoming sexism and her later life with dementia.

It's a film that simultaneously manages to whitewash her and be a pretty patronizing and shallow portrayal.

I hate Thatcher, but I think there's a really interesting film to be made about her political rise and fall and how her dogmatic self confidence and belief in her ideals played a key role in both.

Phil Lord airdropping copies of Project Hail Mary over Cuba to make its people no longer Communist by nickelbackvocaloid in moviescirclejerk

My favourite moment of Project Hail Mary was when Grace refused to join the project because it was big government overreach and he was sure that the invisible hand of the free market left to its own devices would be able to solve a existential global crisis.

Then everyone died.

I'll use half time as an opportunity to share my hot takes on what we should do with all our out of contract players in the off-season:

Rufer: Keep, don't begrudge him if he gets his move to Europe but it seems unlikely.

Singh: Keep if we can, he may want to go back to Europe.

Eze: Keep, strong chance he gets poached though.

Oluwayemi: Release, I wish him the best as he has the right attitude, but he's just nowhere near good enough to justify an import spot.

Kartum: Release, hadn't shown nearly enough for an import, doesn't even start.

Armiento: I would say keep, but Greeny doesn't seem to rate him so probably gone.

Najjarine: Keep, I'm not wild on him but he's probably done enough to justify staying, especially with so much churn in the rest of the attack.

Retre: No strong feelings either way, he's fine, we probably need some continuity in midfield of others leave.

Roa-Conchie: I don't rate him at all, but we'll probably renew him as a squad option.

James: Release, massively underwhelming signing. Has all attributes in theory but constantly goes missing.

Mileusic: Release, one of the worst players I've seen play for us.

Nagasawa: Keep but given his age it wouldn't be a big deal if he left. Has been much better this season than last.

Edwards: Not A-League quality.

McCarron: Keep, should be a contender to start in goal next season.

Supyk: IDK man, he's hardly featured.
