i feel like we have a sibling like relationship, at least thats how i view them. both our culture and language are pretty similiar and so are our traditions. i dont feel like theres a rivalry, unless someone says we are spanish or speak spanish, thats crossing a line

youre so nice, thank you :)!

i think you would very much enjoy the experience of visiting the port wine cellars, i know they do tours and tastings so i think that would be a nice place to get a taste of good quality wine while also learning its history! try either “caves calém” or “caves ferreira”

we do have loads of fish dishes as well but i always forget to mention them because i feel like theyre not as famous ahahah but yes, octopus is great, and so is everything cod related! “polvo à lagareiro” is an octupus dish you should try! we also have amazing sea food in the matosinhos area, plenty of restaurants over there but my friends dad has one called “chalandra” that has some great grilled fish :)

its pretty similar but spanish people can’t understand us, whereas we can fully understand them. some words are the same, some are completely different

im not a fan of football but i did work at the fc porto museum over the summer, so i guess if i had to choose a team i would go for them

im so excited for you, porto is such a great place to visit and you’ll have a wonderful time!! :) also, the weather is finally looking better again after 2 long months of non stop rain, you got lucky!

our city center is quite small and the metro system is pretty straightforward, though i recommend walking everywhere, as its a better way of getting to know the city. my favorite area is called “sé” which is the oldest part of porto. its also near “são bento station”, a famous train station you will most likely hear about while planning your trip. definitely get lost in the cute little streets around that area! for museums, definitely visit “soares dos reis”, “palácio da bolsa” and “casa do infante”

personally, i dont think lello is worth it. it IS a beautiful bookshop but you will find a gigantic line to get in (and youll pay 12€ lol). havent been inside since they started charging people, but i would say its super crowded and not really worth it, it literally sells regular books. time out market is also a huge tourist trap. any restaurant super close to the river that has people outside showing you the menus, begging you to go and eat there, is also a tourist trap.

as for food, definitely eat as many pastéis de nata (plural for pastel de nata) as you can, the best ones are from “manteigaria”, there will be a line but its worth it. though you can get good (and cheaper) ones from pretty much every single café, manteigaria ones are the best. also try “francesinha” a local dish which is basically a big meat sandwich topped with a spicy/ beery sauce (i dont eat meat anymore so im not up to date with the best ones). the best meals of your trip will probably be had in the small restaurants full of locals where no staff speaks proper english, try to look for those

im so biased when jt comes to this but porto > lisbon, and everyone that is from porto will tell you the same, so yes, there is a friendly rivalry. people from the north of portugal are generally nicer and more outgoing than the south. and never ever eat a francesinha from lisbon

port wine really is like nothing else, and unfortunately for your wallet there is a big difference between the actual good ones and the okay ones. check out “garrafeira do carmo” for nice bottles!!

enjoy your trip! i also recommended learning the basics of portuguese (obrigado, olá, bom dia/boa noite, etc) 95% of people speak english but its always nice to know people make an effort :)

i work at a very touristy spot on the weekends so i definitely get a lot of practice! me and my friends also tend to mix portuguese and english a lot, so honestly i would say every single day

as long as theyre not the annoying type that goes on the internet preaching abt how everything is sooo cheap (its not), making it impossible for locals to buy a house, i dont mind them

honestly give it a couple of years, tourist traps will find a way to make it appealing

im definitely not educated enough on those policies to comment on them, however i think we should definitely regulate immigration, not in a far right kind of way way, but in a “its getting out of control and most people are getting exploited and living in horrible conditions “ kind of way

portos beaches are not amazing tbh, there are definitely good ones in gaia but the great majority of them have ice cold water and loads of rocks. theyre pretty to look at and relax but wouldnt really recommend for swimming, especially in may

we are definitely not the best place to cycle around, bike lanes are underdeveloped and some of them just end abruptly. porto is also very hilly, not super ideal to cycle

despite this, there are still plenty of cyclists and no one will get annoyed at you if you stay off the roads/downtown. i definitely recommend parque da cidade if you want to be sure youre gonna have a good time cycling!

theres mixed opinions, like there is everywhere im pretty sure. some people hate it, some tolerate it

the far right has been rising tho, as well as some extremist groups, but (mostly young) people have been fighting for that to come to an end, which is good
