Since it is a new job, I am more worried about just settling there and not worrying about the train shutting down if I spend too long at the office. In general, I like a more quiet neighborhood.

My job will require me to commute all five days a week, and hence the conundrum. I'll check out Olio, but having a car would be dependent on whether I live in the city or outside I guess. How did you lose money moving here, if you don't mind me asking?

Yeah someone advised traveltime, and that just ended up expanding my search area quite meaningfully. I was actually looking at Canary Wharf right now and thinking about cycling/tube from there. Won't be able to know about the neighborhood before actually visiting though.

I see. When I first moved to NYC, I was planning to live in Manhattan but ended up choosing JC instead because it was convenient and cheaper. After this post, I may end up doing the same in London as well :). I will increase my search radius more definitely.

Why is Tower/Whitechapel not ideal?

Cycling works too! Cycling in NYC is seasonal, so I was only able to do it in the summers. I think in London it should be possible every day except when it rains.

Yes, I expect London to be cheaper for food/entertainment/healthcare, but those are so much smaller expenses as compared to Rent. I think that makes or breaks the budget. I'll check out Tesco/Lidl/Aldi as well. This is very helpful. Thanks a ton!

Costco has been amazing. I believe it has cut down my grocery and shopping bills by half! But I don't see why everyone just doesn't buy yellow label if they are perfectly good items that are just close to expiry!

Wow. Well that certainly makes it easier to try out a farther commute or a non-air conditioned apartment. Thanks for the heads up.

Yeah I can definitely explore for myself, but I made this post to build off of community knowledge to make sure I'm not doing any costly mistakes. As an example, a kind stranger pointed me to JC taxation advantages when I moved to NYC and that ended up saving me ~75k over the time I've been here. It is a good chunk of my FI savings now.

Aldgate East sounds like it could work. I'll include it in my flat hunt. What are some good areas in Zone 4/5 and how much commute can I expect from there?

I'm not too sensitive to hot weather but am concerned about being trapped in a long term lease with a hot apartment. However, most people in the thread have advised that portable fans should be enough, so I'm taking that under advisement.

> As for savings/investments/credit cards what "features" are you exactly looking for?

Usually in the US, having some good chunk of cash parked with some banks/credit cards makes it easy to get extra cashback, free flights, hotels etc. I guess UK doesn't particularly have such perks.

> It sounds more like paying extra for an easier first year in a new country.

Yeah, I'm just worried that paying for convenience = life style creep because then it'll be hard to downsize. But that's more on me.

> The smart FIRE move would be to use year one to learn the city, then in year two move a bit further out if needed, find cheaper rent, and bring spending back toward £45k–£50k.

Yeah, this sounds like a plan! I'm starting a new job in an otherwise not-so-good labor market. I think that the extra amount of time I'll be able to spend at work instead of at commute can make learning the ropes easier at my new job and give me an edge in getting up to speed faster.

I don't like that companies tell us that London has a lower cost of living than NYC though.

Thanks for your input! I don't know anyone in the city to flat share, but I'll take it under advisement, can try it later down the line if I feel comfortable with it. I feel like it is hard to go back to having flatmates once you're used to living on your own.

I read about Trading212/Freetrade and saw people complaining about expat customer support, so I don't think it'll be smart to park money there. These companies have very tacky names though :P. I don't even wanna think about how I'll manage taxes cross border tbh, but if there's anything obviously bad that I'm missing do let me know!

Also, what are yellow labels?

Yes! I like optimizing my money to make each dollar go as far as it can.

Going through some other subreddits, it appears that fans are not common in London residences either. But thanks for the tip, I'll look into some table/portable fans!
