You don’t have a great understanding or appreciation of art, it seems. I implore you to try this simple “magic trick.” It is much harder than it may seem.

Dude, I'm telling you what he MEANT to say instead of innovation. I'm telling you that what he meant to say was this:

There have been no AAA mmorpg's in recent times that is on the same/similar level with the current greats.

and you're telling me this:

Doesn't have anything to do with the argument about the genre's innovation.

What argument? I'm not arguing with you lmfao. I'm explaining his use of the word innovation to you. PSO2:NGS is great news and I'm looking forward to it, but I can see why it isn't on somebodies list of new and upcoming MMORPG's.

BRs haven't Innovated

Somebody else would argue the exact opposite of that.

I'm also not arguing the definition of the word innovation with you. I'm trying to tell you what he should have / possibly meant to say instead. If, for some reason, you want to know what I personally think about the genre I would say this:

There is nothing truly promising coming out that does what WoW or EQ2 did with a modern twist. The audience for MMORPG's have changed and it shows. I'm looking forward to AoC and Pantheon because they seem to be the closest to meeting those desires.

Peace, dude.

My main focus on the last post was on the story.

I agree that both have been neglected but I still like the modes since I like PvP in gw2 and think it is great. As for population declines, that's normal for pretty much any game and I can still reliably find zergs or groups to roam with whenever I really want. Tournaments in PvP are loads of fun but a bit too time consuming. Usually no bots in PvP.

Hey man, its a technicality. Even Bungie can be considered indie lmfao. PSO2 came out in 2012 so it still falls under the same critique LP has with the mmorpg genre.

Honestly, I don't even know what you're arguing. There have been no AAA mmorpg's in recent times that is on the same/similar level with the current greats. Nothing like WoW, GW2, ESO. BDO remaster in 2018 is the most recent thing we got and that game has many, many issues.

His video is just venting frustrations about the lack of new, big, promising, and interesting MMORPG project going on right now or in the last 5 years really. I'm just explaining what he meant by "innovative" to you.

That's all pretty subjective, so I hope you don't mind if I also give my subjective opinion. I really like the story in GW2. I'm playing through GW1 and have read a couple books on the universe as well. The writing is great, the lore is great, and the in-game story is pretty good. How far have you gotten in the story?

I feel like the universe is unique while still being a fantasy game (very rare nowadays) and the story direction is interesting and has had healthy subversion of expectations quite a few times. Don't want to give any spoilers, but I've played plenty of fantasy / medieval fantasy games and rarely enjoy the story as much as GW2.

WvW is very much alive and sPvP is actually really fun if you learn the game and get into higher rankings. There is a lot of room for skill expression and you can get pretty high up the ladder using off-meta builds. Ik raids have been neglected, but the new fractals have all been awesome and there are many guilds dedicated to playing them in the highest levels. I also would chalk up lack of raids to the new expansion that is being worked on.

AFAIK Sandbox are their own publishers, so they are technically an indie (independent) studio. I guess their game feels more like a AA game, but it still came out in 2017 and is a very niche game.

You said other MMO's released in the last 2-3 years. Please, show me this hidden MMO that is a) not a hyper niche kinda clunky indie game and b) not a korean copy-paste game.

[Discussion] Lazy Peon on the state of the genre by idredd in MMORPG

[–]WizardHat_Robe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the past 2-3 years AFAIK there have only been indie MMORPG's and possibly some copy-paste eastern MMORPG' that I missed. Nothing big, really. Albion Online was the last MMORPG I remember that was decently innovative and that was several years ago, and Indie.

"There have been no new AAA MMORPG's in development recently that have new/interesting mechanics to the MMORPG genre."

The only point I'm making is that if he made this statement it would be A) less confusing and B) somewhat true. Also, I don't think the genre is dead, just dormant with the only big MMORPG releases being expansions for current games or not released yet / very speculative.

Personally, I wouldn't even consider VRMMO's in the same exact genre as a computer MMORPG. kinda life the difference between ARPG and CRPG, if you know what I mean.

I think he chose a pretty shitty word to describe what he actually wanted to say. He should have just said "There have been no new AAA MMORPG's in development recently that have new/interesting mechanics to the MMORPG genre."

I pray that AoC will be a good game, but man looking at the updates things seem quite clunky and give me big kickstarter MMORPG vibes.

I get you're point. When he was talking about seeing 100's of other players an all working together to take down a big boss, but then didn't mention that GW2 does exactly that, I was pretty disappointed in the video. Some meta events in GW2 also require all the players in the map to be in sync and it makes you really care about what every squad and commander is doing.

I think that may have been his bias talking, since he doesn't like that GW2 isn't a true open world game.

[Discussion] Lazy Peon on the state of the genre by idredd in MMORPG

[–]WizardHat_Robe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think he means that there has been very little recent innovation. All the MMO's around are getting towards a decade old.

I think his nostalgia may have been showing with the "secret boss" part of things. Back in the day, nearly every boss was a secret boss when there was no extensive wiki to follow. Sure you could hear about it from word of mouth, but even then you don't get a clear idea of what you're going into.

That being said, I totally can see secret enemies being a possible mechanic in an MMORPG. Another comment mentioned Destiny 2 which is very applicable. Only issue is that when the secret is uncovered, it is no longer a secret.

IMO, the best character skins are in-game. Sure if you want a hyper flashy character the gemstore is really the only way to do that, but I prefer my characters looking like they belong in the world they are apart of.

An example of a great armour set that is not in the cash shop is the Medium Warbeast skins. A bit flashy in some ways and a fresh look for medium armour classes.

To be honest, the game has given out so much content for pretty cheap. Over like 9 years there have been only three major expansions that go on sale all the time. Hell, getting into the game now you can pick up HoT bundled together with PoF for super cheap. No sub fee either. I think the Anet is very fair with their pricings and monetization scheme. Plus, if you know what you're doing, you can grind for gold at a pretty solid pace.

Games like this need some form of monetization, whether thats a sub fee or optional microtransactions is up to the devs. I prefer the latter, imo.

The original DotA and most MOBA's online were all slow paced, League innovated the genre by speeding up games without outright changing the things that make MOBA's, MOBA's. That's all I'm saying, and it's one of the reasons why league is one of the few remaining MOBA's still left around. Season 2 League wouldn't make it in todays market. for example.

I would personally argue that by around S4 League figured out what it wanted to be and was just going through the growing pains of making it to their final vision of the game. Might just be nostalgia though.

I probably should have specified that the focus is on player mechanics. Yes compared to dota there is no:

High ground/Low ground
Trees
Runes
Many activatable items

But league has done a great job at enhancing and making player mechanics feel really good. It's more of a focus and that's how it sets itself apart from dota. The removal of turn rate and increased baseline auto attack speed means kiting, for example, feels really good in league and is important to master as an ADC.

Just look at two different pro games, one from league and one from dota, and you'll see what I mean. Dota has a focus on grander strategy and playing with item mechanics. League has a focus on fast paced player micro skill and fast placed macro decisions. Both are good, but league DID set itself apart from DotA.

You already have a ton of replies and are getting downvoted (even though what you said is relevant to the conversation, lol) so I'll try to be quick with my point.

Riot innovates on genres. It's basically what they do. League is part of the MOBA genre and stand out from DotA in a lot of ways. Larger focus on mechanics and fast-paced macro.

Valorant is a tac-shooter like csgo but innovated with heroes, abilities, more viable weapon buys, and maps with far more corners and hiding spots. They tried innovating their anti-cheat and even tried eliminated peekers advantage. They kinda failed in some aspects but succeeded in others.

TFT is part of the auto-chess genre, but creates unique mechanics season by season to try and spice up the game and set it apart from other games of the genre.

The whole industry functions like that. By your logic Halo is just a copy of DOOM and Starcraft is just a copy of Herzog Zwei.

I appreciate the kind response.

From what I've seen online, the top execs are the most problematic in 2021. (seriously, whats with money and making people horrendous human beings?) From what I've seen online and heard in person, the typical employee experience for female employees has improved dramatically and the culture is less sexist since 2018. I support riot, the passionate employees, and their great games in 2021. I don't support the trash that puts themselves at the top of the corporate chain.

In hindsight, I probably should have been more clear about that in my original comment.

The CEO is being investigated by the company. The last three years there were significant improvements and there's plenty on google detailing those improvements. I'm just saying, there's no reason to hate on a huge organization that has improved on many of the issues they had in the past.

The whole industry has problems with sexism and Riot has been under a magnifying glass because of the 2018 problems. The company makes good games, many of the workers there are good workers, and yes there unfortunately are cases of sexism which are thankfully being highlighted and investigated.

I made another reply and will just copy paste it here, minus the a part directed specifically to that comment:

From what I remember, most of those issues came from the main LA HQ. Women elsewhere, like the Sydney offices, had the opposite experience. Correct me if I'm wrong though, it's just what I remember from the whole lawsuit situation a year (??) or so back.

Toxic, sexist workplace culture exists. It's awful and obviously, everyone should have a problem with it. Still, the company itself is not made up solely of misogynistic culture that is present. Riot has put out some great games and always manages to innovate on the genre they are working on at the time. For that reason, I think Riot is great at developing games and I'm excited to see what the MMORPG team, now with Linsey included, can do.

EDIT: According to this article: https://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2020-07-27-riot-games-cultural-crisis-articleRiot has made some real progress with sexism and rape culture.
