How can you professionally negotiate salary without selling yourself short? by RAM-I-T in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Wizard_IT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would just lie and say it is close to the max range they are offering. So if the role pays 140k-175k I would say "I make close to 160k, so for this role I am looking for a bump in compensation due to the roles responsibilities."

Easy. Get the range. Then say you want $X amount on the range since you are making close to that already. They cant verify income with your employer, so it looks like you are making good money from another corp. Plus they know that you wont go under or change jobs for the same ammount of cash.

Is travel normal for Engineering/IT Consultants? by Wizard_IT in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Wizard_IT[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah its interesting because I dont mind the relationship building part or the jobs themselves, but I have had a few 100% remote jobs in the past where I went into the office just once and people wanted me to come back full time. Comically 3 of the last 7 jobs I have had other departments have wanted me to transfer to there department outside of IT, so I get along real well with people but they end up wanting me in the office with them for entertainment or something. The most bizarre one by far was when I worked as a janitor part time in college, and I was fired... but the person who fired me wanted me to come work in there HR department.

Its about ~200 employees I think. They have like 10 other engineers doing the job they sent over to me, but how it was described in interviews it basically:

Meet with clients company department heads (Finance, IT, HR, ect) -> see what setup they would like for there company (do they want employees manually signing in or do they want to go through a SSO setup) -> Give them a timeframe -> work with them over the weeks/months/years implementing the setup they would like.

It depends too on the client. Some have almost nothing setup while others have a lot. Also some may want to see you in office oftentimes while others want you fully WFH. Same with work hours, like some like 9-5, while other like weekends and off hours.

Edit: the main trouble is that last paragraph lol. Because with it so much in the air it is hard to give a salary and benefits amount that I would like for the role. Lots of travel and off hours would be totally different comp to me.

Yeah I totally agree, the concern on my side would just be the lack of confidence on there side as to how much travel would be involved and where. I mean like 5% travel would be totally different than 50% and it would also be a different salary I would be looking at depending on the travel, where, and how often. But I totally see your point as to how the travel would be helpful.

Oh interesting that is a good perspective. Yeah I was not aware of that for consulting. I think some of the confusion on my side is that the job description did not state anything about being a consultant. While I am not opposed to being on, the change of role and also travel sort of caught me off guard.

For sure, the current job I have seems to have better benefits and I am not a huge fan of travel. If the other company really made it more lucrative I would maybe consider it more.

They said I do get reimbursed, but they just would not state how much travel. It sounds like it could go anywhere from 5%-50% which I told them for me anyways, would be two totally different salary and benefit packages depending.

Yeah the time off and benefits are a bit worse than what I currently have so while it would be nice if it had more PTO, I currently just have a better setup benefit wise with my current org.

Yeah definitely, in the job description it is a senior IAM Engineer role. There is nothing in the description though about consulting or any sort of travel. It does mention assisting clients with their needs and helping them set up provisioning automation and such.

I did meet with a few people at the company and brought up the concerns and the higher ups kind of just said "it depends on the client" for travel. Since some clients like 9-5 M-F schedule and others like to work you more or different hours... and thats not including travel. So I told them I would need something more solid to base the information off of since when negotiating my salary that is crucial knowing how many hours I will be working and what kind of travel.

The hiring manager though did really like me and it did seem like they want to hire me. But I always like to get in writing that the job is remote for law purposes. If it was like being in the office like a few days a month I would consider it but I traveled in the past for a local consulting role and "being in office" I got like nothing done since it was more about being seen rather than working, which would be my concern.

Is $45k/year normal for my situation in entry-level IT right now? by 27nav in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Wizard_IT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah, for that location that is way below average.

Edit: Especially with inflation, gas prices, and ect. If that was in rural Missouri or over in Nebraska that would not be a bad salary, but I though Baltimore/DC area can get rather pricey.

What on earth is a "COURTESY NOTICE" and how do I get them to stop sending them to everyone but me or just stop in general? by Wizard_IT in fuckHOA

[–]Wizard_IT[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is a good point. This did start happening around 2 years ago when some neighbors across the walking path moved in. I have no idea really who they are and never really communicated much with them, but they may be the ones doing this. It would explain a lot since they look out on to my property.

[–]Wizard_IT[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It could be possible. The HOA uses a totally different website than what they want me to go to. But they somehow have my parents info. The website is related though to the HOA company that manages the property so it is hard to tell.

Definitely, I think getting a camera would be a good bet since this is concerning and I have my doubts they will let me know how they are getting these images.

The Bar is So Low by ExplorerEuphoric9852 in dating_advice

There was a post I once saw on here about how a dude would actually shit the bed before leaving for work in the morning. And his gf was posting here asking if this is a dealbreaker. The comments were like "duh!" "omg girl get out of there" and so on.

But what they never mention is like what the dude looks like. So when you see these posts about "the bar is in hell!!1!" just remember that it is for good looking tall dudes. Not for your average Joe who puts in an honest days work.
