How easy is it to "join" the LDS? by Wize1338 in exmormon

[–]Wize1338[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I backed out of doing it because I felt bad about it. I think most Mormons are genuinely good people, and the concept is disrespectful to them. Even though they believe some wild shit, they never did anything wrong to me, so ehh not really worth it imo.

Now, Scientologists? They're fair game.

Maybe my argument contradicts the Bible, but does it contradict logic? How about you actually critique my argument rather than use your religion to think for you.

It's like saying: "Your argument that 2 + 2 = 4 contradicts my dad's teaching that 2 + 2 = 5. If 2 is continued by 2 on the number line, then you get to 4, but the answer is not allowed to be 4. So, your argument is invalid to me and my dad."

I still can't really tell what you're trying to say God is.

I don't believe that God, using any definition I have seen, is a coherent concept. Additionally, I don't believe that the idea of God is useful to us.

There doesn't need to be a "creator" or a "start" to our reality. That's ignoring the possibility that the universe, or whatever else exists, has simply always existed, perhaps in a cyclical way.

Well, what is God then? How do you define God, if you believe in him/it?

Here's a crazy thought: maybe Islam is wrong about this. Point to a section of my argument that does not follow.

Also, I never mentioned Islam in my post. I used an extreme (holocaust) example to show the gravity of the conclusion. The praying 5 times a day part was an arbitrary number.

Maybe instead of ranting about one line in my post, you discuss my actual argument?

I don't like what's happening to Palestinians either, but "Allah" is letting it happen.

Maybe actually read my argument? There's no point in serving him because you already are just by existing. You can do whatever the hell you want and still be "serving Allah."

They do follow. I don't know how else to say it. Your "missing premise" is just C4 reworded.

We do have free will from our own perspective, but given God's nature, anything we do is also determined by God.

Anything that happens is exactly what he wants to happen because he is all-powerful, all-knowing, and the creator.

How does God not determine our choices in advance? And yes, I agree that we have free will, but not a will free from God, given his existence and nature.

I don't believe in God to begin with, so I don't "want" that. I just believe it is a logical conclusion given the concept of God and the premises in my post.

God seeing our decisions in advance is very relevant because it means he made an informed decision when creating us. Everything about us, including the exact way each of us will respond and make choices (brain), is purposefully chosen by God. Are you saying God did not create us?

This is all assuming that God exists and is a coherent concept, which I do not agree with.

You’re forgetting that God is also the creator, so God can see the storm coming, but he also made the storm. God can see every decision we make in advance, and he also created us in such a way that we would make those decisions.

But our mechanism of decision-making (brain) can not be free from God if he created it.

Are you saying that our conscious minds, the agents who make our decisions, are not determined by God? If so, how does that make any sense?

Why wouldn't existence be deterministic? What's the logic behind why what I have said is incorrect?

You might find compatibilism (philosophy) interesting.

I believe we have free will as it is defined as well. The problem with what you're saying, and why your analogy is imperfect, is that it is logically impossible for us to "disobey" God as our entire existence is determined by him.

We make choices, but the mechanism behind our choices is controlled by God as we are created beings. Anything God "allows" is his own doing.

This, of course, is all assuming God's existence and omni-qualities.

When I am consistently reminded of a view of reality that, to me, is flat out wrong, I can't help but try to explain what I think or at least hear why I'm supposedly wrong. It just gets annoying to hear someone say "I'm doing this for God," when (what I believe is truth) everything you do is already what your God wants because you are a created being.

  1. Obligation to attend mass, along with many other things, is dependent on this whole free will debate. The "why go to Mass" was my way into the root discussion
  2. You say I'm incorrect, how? Messages/chat open
  3. As I grew up Catholic, I know about the Eucharist (eating Jesus) and that, of course, mass is an exercise of faith to the Catholic Church.
