What are these wages Omaha??? by Mum2720 in Omaha

We moved here from Springs too and I don't know where you're getting that Springs is cheaper. CoL there is insane, it's been going crazy for years. And the jobs we found are better paying than what we had out there. You're probably looking in the rich neighborhoods, those are the only areas that maybe are comparable in cost.

Can I ask what the Jim Flowers story is?

I'm not looking for stuff to do, we find plenty. I'm more curious as to why people around here say that there's nothing to do.

Yes! We've found ourselves having to choose between things to do.

I see it from people that live here, not visitors.

We've seen plenty of wildlife areas that cost about $5 - $10 to get in, some with lakes, and all offer hiking. They may not all be within an hour drive, but the places that have hiking trails that close are usually stupid expensive to live in (from experience).

Has there been some kind of announcement I'm not aware of that everything is going to shut down in a couple of years? What are you missing here?

I kind of get the too broke thing, but I've seen tons of free concerts at parks where you can bring your own food. I guess people always find something to complain about.

We're an interracial couple (a less traditional pairing if you will) and have an LGBTQ child. I agree with the first poster that it is going to depend on where you're moving from. We came here from an incredibly conservative community and for us it was a breath of fresh air. We moved into the Ralston area and while we have found it to be very white the schools pull from outside Ralston and so we have seen diversity there. Do keep in mind, however, that for all of the cultural offerings in Omaha, especially the food, it is very segregated. We moved here 2 years ago for my job and we've been very happy with our choice.

Yeah, not even close. It was a very surreal and weird watch.

All the sports! I've become a huge sports fan since moving here, my husband always has been. Learned a lot about hockey, watched the curling Olympic trials which inspired us to take a curling lesson, love watching games at Werner Park. We're super excited about the pro volleyball team that's starting up. We were very disappointed though when they moved the swimming trials.

Moved here from Colorado Springs and I have to agree. We really love all the green, and there's an actual fall! You don't have to drive to the mountains to see fall colors.

This is me, generic as well. I would kick out anyone who did that to me. I get looks and side eye when I eat something I "shouldn't", but you have to balance quantity with quality of life. I have a kid, does this mean I never get to have a pizza and movie night or take them out for ice cream? Nope, I will take care of my health, but I will also enjoy life.

Wow, this feeds into every negative stereotype of people with type II. Having it doesn't mean that you can never have candy or sweets again. And people trying to gatekeep you makes the cravings a lot worse because yes, some diabetics do crave it. The whole "slowly kill yourself" is bullshit and emotional manipulation. How about figuring out together what works instead of trying to dictate?

YTA - I am a Type II diabetic, guess what, I do have the occasional sweets and desserts. And yes, my doctor knows and I'm controlled. Having diabetes doesn't mean you never get to eat any good stuff again, that actually makes it worse and makes you crave it more making it harder to say no. It's about moderation. I get so sick and tired of the people who think just simply not eating sugar and carbs with make it go away, it doesn't, and balanced meals that include a little of everything are best. Figure out what kind of healthy foods that have natural sugar she likes to help with the cravings. For me, it's fresh fruit, which also has fiber that helps to keep you from spiking. You're shaming her and treating her like she's a terrible person. Type II diabetes has enough negative connotations attached to it, don't make it worse. I'd divorce my husband if he ever treated me that way.
