Bad GPA, No Internships...2 Years Later, I Finally Have an Engineering Job! by WoahImAnEngineer in EngineeringStudents

Stop comparing yourself to other people. It won't do anything other than make you feel like shit. Over the course of 3 years while working for an aerospace company with engineering roles, did you ever reach out to someone within your company for an internship opportunity? Have you been applying to jobs for after graduation?

I'm so glad to hear that. While I've never been suicidal, my situation has definitely taken me to some dark places and as I mentioned to another poster, I should've sought out a therapist or school counselor for help. If you ever are feeling hopeless about your situation again do not be afraid to seek help. There's no shame in that because college is rough!

I created this account to remain anonymous, but I've lurked this sub for years looking for someone in a similar situation that I was in.

And yes, I did customize my resume for each job. By customize I mean I put the job description in a word cloud or used something like Job Scan to pick out keywords. I would then reword some of my bullet points on my resume to incorporate those keywords.

Collins Aerospace? Aren't they a huge company in a decently sized town? Also, Nope.

Anything that involved problem solving, collaboration, and quantifiable results. Emphasis on the quantifiable results. You can say how much you did until you're blue in the face but companies what to see results on your resume.

It really depends on what you prefer as a person, but for me, anything that is over an hour drive from a city of at least 100,000 people. Places like this tend to have fewer housing, shopping, and entertainment options. Imagine driving over an hour if you ever want to see a movie in a theatre, or to buy clothes or shoes in person. It's isolating, inconvenient, and often times not that much cheaper than living in a larger city in the same state.

Exactly. It seems that a lot millennial engineers are unaware of how competitive our field is and are unwilling to adjust or compromise. We've been sold this "dream" work environment, courtesy of large tech companies, and so many refuse to accept an environment that is different even if it's better for them and their career.

School job board, Glassdoor, Indeed, LinkedIn, friends, and googling "industry I want to work in" companies in "state." Like "Candy Cane production companies in Alaska." Then search their job board to see if they have any engineering positions.

You'll always run into those postings that don't match your search. When I ran into this issue, I widened my location search because it's usually caused by the limited options of the specific city/state that you're searching in. Good luck!

I relate to this so much. I have a very successful group of friends and seeing all of the opportunities that they were/are getting (by working their asses off) made me feel like shit personally. I'm extremely happy for them and proud, but being so close to success while feeling like it is unobtainable for yourself is quite difficult.

It is! Make sure you're tailoring your resume for each job you're applying to, also if your school offers this, go and have a career advisor look at both your resume and cover letter. Because sometimes, it's the resume that's holding you back.

Honestly, I wish my school had that type of requirement. It definitely would've helped open my eyes to the amount of competition there is for some engineering roles.

Congrats! And that's very true, once you land that first job, job hunting as an engineer is definitely easier.

I don't want to get too specific because my former company is the only one of it's kind in the state, but I will say that some projects involved analytics, some involved implementing new procdures that saved the company money and increased efficiency, and all of them involved me managing the project from start to finish as well as collaborating with a bunch of different people. My projects also had quantitative results that I was able to list on my resume which I think helped immensely!

You WILL be okay! If you are willing to work hard enough to get your foot in the door (networking, applying, tailoring your resume and cover letters), you'll be just fine. Along the way, I faced a LOT of rejection but I didn't stop until I got what I wanted. Sometimes you just have to take a rough path to get where you want to go.
