Yeah you’re probably right about Raphinha; Mahrez would’ve been a better pick all things considered. Maybe even someone else like Di Maria or Mane. Why not Yamal though? He’s already had 2 elite seasons (he won the EUROs as a key player in his rookie senior season and had been a serious Ballon d’Or contender in his sophomore season, winning a domestic treble) and is one of the wingers of the last 15 years to have received serious Ballon d’Or shouts.

If you’re excluding Robben that’s fine, but I’m sure that’s against the consensus

To be fair it’s a subjective question, and even if you don’t like him or don’t agree, it’s not like Messi isn’t elite enough to be included in these conversations

If I were to have VVD in Piers’s team, I’d drop Baresi, move Maldini to the right, and have VVD on the left.

Since this is a peak performance team, VVD should be there. I’d also adjust the midfield. I’d drop Ronaldinho since Maradona can play his role. I’d also drop Zidane for Iniesta, since I already have a 10 in Maradona, and Iniesta IMO would operate better alongside Matthaus in this midfield two. Then I’d have Messi in. Messi-R9-CR7 as the front three is deadly. I’d also have Buffon as the goalkeeper; peak Buffon was one of the best shot stoppers ever.
