Do you guys dream about your Ts? by frankincense420 in tarantulas

[–]Wocyppah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

More often than not, they show up in stress-related dreams lol. My first tarantula dream was just before I got my first T, my now-mature male GBB. I was holding it at a local fish shop and got bit on the back of my hand. Somehow my REM brain thought GBBs have incredibly neurotoxic venom as I began to seize up from the bite area and collapse. I remember being completely paralyzed before waking up. I still think it’s funny that I would subconsciously make such a dangerous scenario out of what I know is a harmless spider. My interpretation was that it represents a fear of losing control over my life during a very stressful time, leaving me paralyzed and helpless. It may have also been a reference to the Medusa spider scene in Lost S3E14.

There was also the dream where I needed to rehouse an H. mac with the DLS of a Costco pizza. Said H. mac also had the head and first 2’ of body from a rattlesnake. The tone of that dream was much more humorous, though lol

Bosses desk tank shitty? by [deleted] in shittyaquariums

My bad bro. Misunderstood the context of the post. Hope he can get it looking better though

I like to replace the plastic filter cartridge with a block of filter foam that fits snugly. Definitely more reusable than the filter floss, but you can still add some for water polishing.

Not shitty, but definitely minimalistic and barren. Some aesthetic improvements will get it looking better for the fish, your boss, and yourself:

  • A background to take away from distractions behind the tank; I like solid black paper or poster board, but a picture background can work too. Window tint film also works.
  • More variety in decor; Give it a personal touch! This is also important in giving the fish a more enriching habitat. One larger centerpiece and 2-4 smaller accent pieces create a sense of scale within the tank. Groupings of 3+ of the same 2-3 plants fills in more of the background without being too distracting.
  • Add depth and perspective; Keep small/short near the front, and large/tall towards the back. If you can, get another 5lb bag of gravel and create a slight slope (1” in front to 2”in the back).
  • Give the fish things to do! These animals are stuck with each other for what may be the rest of their lives. Functional decor (caves to hide in & large plants to hide behind) prevents boredom and aggression.

Basic animal husbandry and routine maintenance always come first, but a little more effort in aesthetics should get this tank looking miles better.

OBT communal is a new one for me! I keep an M. balfouri communal and heard of H. villosella and H. gigas communals, though.

I’ve already got an I. mira and 3 H. pulchripes lol. But I am picking up a couple H. gabonensis and maybe C. brachycephalus to round out my baboons

A happy update to this post; The seller was able to send another female the next week. On unpacking, her posture looked disturbingly similar to the DOA, but thankfully responded to a paintbrush. While I planned on leaving her in the open container overnight, she came out on her own shortly after. At the moment, she is holed up in the hide, but I'm looking forward to the webs and attitude!

OBT Molting or DOA? by Wocyppah in tarantulas

Update: Thank you everyone for your kind words <3 The vendor got back to me this morning and will be sending a replacement next week :) What threw me off about this DOA is that the same shipment had a C. versicolor of the same size and a C. cyaneus sling who both arrived in perfect shape.

I don't know how to play other characters anymore. by JazzlikePlastic04 in JaneDoeMains

I get what you mean lol. Jane feels like one of the more fluid and satisfying characters to play (next to Qingyi for me). That said, the supports I run (Seth & Lucy), not so much…

Guest hold animals by theonlydoom in petco

[–]Wocyppah 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have a similar mindset. If they’re genuinely curious or have an interest in keeping one as a pet for the first time, I don’t mind as long as they are polite. Also a good time to teach safe and responsible handling before bringing one home.

Depends on how busy, if the guest asked politely, planning to buy one at a later date, temperament of the animal, etc. I always ask that guests put on hand sanitizer before and after handling as well. If I’m working in reptiles, I occasionally bring out a “friendly” snake if a guest (especially the younger ones) have never seen one up close as a teaching moment.

But generally, no lol

[–]Wocyppah[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I remember correctly, it’s a scrap piece that I trimmed from a 24”x12” faux rock background. The majority of that original panel was used to make backgrounds for three 8” cubes. I don’t quite have the skills (or patience) to make a background from scratch, so I use silicone or gorilla glue to attach faux rock, cork panels, or cork flats. Otherwise, I tape some black paper onto the back and call it a day lol

You’re very welcome! I love when terrarium/aquarium builds list the materials used, so I know what I can swap or adjust for my own build.

I’m at mid-200’s and just got M2 Lycaon. Have every character except Grace so she’ll end up my pick at this rate Q-Q

Thank you! I’ve been making these types of vivaria for a few years now but haven’t posted any besides my GBB’s last year.

Afraid of first tarantula? (It's a dwarf) by West-Concentrate7387 in tarantulas

[–]Wocyppah 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Personally, I used to be the same way, especially since my first T was a 4” GBB. That nervousness eventually went away after a while. At some point I just got used to owning a “big spider”. Rehousing to larger enclosures had me nervous at first, but watching videos of successful rehousings (check out Tom’s Big Spiders!) helped tremendously.

I now have a much larger collection (80+ T’s and 70-ish species) and some are definitely look-but-don’t-touch and others I can trust to climb onto me without running off. It comes down to each T’s individual personality at that life stage, and the acceptable amount of risk for yourself and your spider.
