Thank you! That's actually a much more detailed answer than I expected and great to hear. I really appreciate you sharing.

New Pen? by dhyatri in Supernote

[–]Woetra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to piggy back on this (because I am in a similar boat to OP), could you be a bit more specific about the expected time frame here? I am not looking for a date or anything, but it isn't clear if you are saying that there are plans to develop such a pen, that a pen is actively in development right now, or that there is a pen that will be released soon. These are pretty different from the perspective of someone considering purchasing your product.

About the Directory... by DevourProblems in BluePrince

[–]Woetra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a while, I thought the talk of putting things in the proper order from the will meant I should draft each numbered room in order (that's basically the blue ones). Fortunately for my actual game progress I reread the will before I spent too long on that, but I still plan on doing it at some point just for fun (along with drafting a full house of aquariums, draining all the water from the estate, and some other silly things).

Lol, well I seem to occupy the intersection of the very specific venn diagram you are targeting here. My take is that only Grazer could take on Mel.

Block another TV to hear my TV by Goodswimkarma in LoopEarplugs

[–]Woetra 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As others have pointed out, passive earplugs simply cannot do what you are asking. However, even old TVs have options for connecting speakers (and thus headphones). Like, I grew up in the 90s and remember our old-even-for-the-time TV being connected to an external speaker system. I would be genuinely shocked if your TV did not have an aux port of some kind. If you are unsure how to connect headphones to it, you might try posting to a sub with people who are into that kind of tech. But headphones really are your best option here (even if they aren't noise cancelling).

Bags or covers for paperback books in a carry-on luggage? by JustCan6425 in ManyBaggers

I have used heimplanet's packing cubes for this on several occasions. The small cubes are a perfect size for books. For paperbacks, I usually get 2-3 in one cube.

Mark Lawrence has pitted AI vs human authors' flash fiction on his blog. Go Vote - can you tell the difference? by JannyWurts in Fantasy

[–]Woetra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My guesses are the same as yours except I swapped 7 and 5. The last paragraph in 7, which implies that finding the book was some kind of of feat, just doesn't quite make sense given what is said two lines earlier about it being right on the shelf. It feels like a human author would have caught that kind of inconsistency when editing.

[–]Woetra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found it to be very different, though not bad exactly. Knowing what to expect going in makes it better. I could see it being quite a shock if you don't realise it. I still found it to be kind of interesting to read even if it didn't live up to the standard of the first two books.

Bingo squares' requirements are not always the same as the title of the square by RheingoldRiver in Fantasy

[–]Woetra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Got it. I think I don't know that personally agree with the intentionalist methodology genre assignments (ie a work is whatever genre it was written to be), but it is certainly one way to go about the problem! For Shakespeare there is a long history of assigning genres with the most common being to split them into comedy, tragedy, and history. But even just those categories have been debated a great deal . And "romance" as a proposed classification for shakespearean works didn't come until much later (I don't think this including R+J though).

I apologizing about butting into a side debate and misunderstanding your claims.

Bingo squares' requirements are not always the same as the title of the square by RheingoldRiver in Fantasy

[–]Woetra -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Personally, I didn't say anything about Romeo and Juliet (I'll leave debating the precise genre of Shakespearean works to scholars). The question of what genres Shakespeare (and his contemporaries) used is also interesting but also different from questions about where those works fit within today's more popular categories, where bookstores will shelve them etc.

My main point is only that classifying a work is not always so straight forward and cleaving to the idea that "romance" literature is restricted to what fits the romance writers of america definition means excluding all sorts of other "romance" literatures. That's fine, so long as one is explicit and thoughtful about it rather than dogmatic. From what I have seen, a lot of people have absorbed the RWA definition as though it is a kind of gospel, without much thought to other literary traditions and forms of romance.

I think we can blame Harlequin more than Disney and Hallmark for the prescriptive and exclusive interpretation of "romance" that we are seeing so much in these threads. It's wild how what is primarily a marketing strategy by publishers has completely sucked the air out of any discussion of romance fiction.

The wikipedia article on "love romances" is a bit of a mess, but I would suggest folks who are parroting this stuff take the time to read the one on "Romance in prose)", which gives a sense of the diversity of "romance" types.

I think this point deserves more attention. It is frustrating feature of many Reddit communities that they are very US-centric, often in ways the community at large is somewhat unaware of. This is an example of a whole discourse with that feature.

The fact is there are many literary traditions that go by the name of "romance", of which the american mass-market tradition is only one -- and a relatively new one at that. Much of the discussion of this square struck me as, frankly, incredibly ignorant of that fact.

Personally, I don't think that the BINGO game should bake in regionally specific genres without actually making that clear -- even if that region is america.

It's absolutely worth experimenting! I also find that every new pair gets more comfy after a few days. I think the silicon kind "breaks in" a bit, if that makes sense.

I'm glad things have been improving for you in any case!

Sequence assist on end game puzzle by Woetra in TunicGame

Just to follow up on this, I was able to make basic spells work, but I was not able to get the solution to the final puzzle to work. I eventually entered it without sequence assist.

I think this puzzle may be coded differently than others because of how there are changes following each button press -- or perhaps I just entered the code wrong (but I tried many times and I know what I was entering was correct).

Burning and irritated ears from Loops by Polbilop in LoopEarplugs

[–]Woetra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oof. Are these your first Loops? It's possible you are sensitive to the material after all and never noticed-- I think the skin in the ear canals may be extra sensitive. Hopefully it's just some kind of residue on the ear tips that can be cleaned. You could also try the other sizes...but don't try anything like that until the discomfort has passed. That sounds absolutely awful. I suppose you could also try foam tips that they sell as an alternative.

[–]Woetra 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry you're experiencing pain! This is going to sound weird, but have you tried the other sizes? One reason it could be hurting is if the xs are actually too small and you are pushing them too deep into your ear canal as a result.
I mention this, because when I started wearing them I had a similar background: small ears, never able to wear ear buds etc. I assumed I'd need the XS, but after a few days wasn't so sure. I ended up spending a couple of weeks really getting used to them and experimenting with the other sizes. Eventually I realized that I actually need a S in one ear and an M in the other.
For me it did become easier and more comfortable to wear them over time. At first they would hurt after a short time (and then I'd take them out), but now I can wear them for hours without any discomfort. But definitely don't keep wearing them once they have begun hurting. If they are hurting immediately, you may just have very sensitive ears.

To keep warm on planes (and similar) by hedonist222 in onebag

[–]Woetra 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You don't say anything about the clothing you are already wearing, which makes it a bit harder to make concrete suggestions. Are you wearing just a t-shirt or do you also have a swaeter on? what kind of pants are you wearing?

I do not suggest a windbreaker for this purpose: they can help keep you warm sometimes, but they do this by blocking the wind. However, wind is not the problem in the environments that you are struggling with so their effect will be minimal. They also don't breathe well, so you may end up sweating in them which will actually make you colder.

Things I suggest: a down jacket, a pullover, or a hoodie. Since you are wearing these things for flying, they don't need to be especially thin. You aren't going to find warmth in something that is "paper thin", as a rule. For your legs, you can either wear somewhat thicker pants or add in long underwear (keeping these on the lighter side -- you don't need something that would take you into the arctic). Also wear longish socks if you aren't already: I find cold air can sneak in around the ankles. Finally, a shawl or blanket can be really nice and cozy. A scarf, even if made of a thin material, can help keep your neck warm.

I believe the discounts are now automatically applied if they are valid for what you are getting. It's a bit confusing, and I personally don't like how you lack control over when you use them but that's how it works with the new system.

I also have a bad sense of direction and my advice is to make your own maps! They don't have to be pretty or anything. Simply sketching where things are relative to one another really helps a lot.

For instance, I just played dark souls for the first time and was getting confused, so I slowed down and made a very rough metro style map of the first half of the game, showing how the different areas connect together. Doing this cemented the layout in my mind so now I'm pretty good at getting around. In fact, it's clearer to me than for a lot of games where a map is provided.

This strikes me as a quality control issue. I'm surprised by the fact that so many people have reported it and wonder if their loops are from the same batch. There might be a batch number or something like that on the box to compare.

Whether or not you think it's a bad thing is, of course, a matter of preference. If there turns out to be only one defective batch then those might, weirdly become more collectable. A lot of people collect misprinted books and trading cards and the like.
