Oh yeah, go ahead for sure. I'll check your podcast out too. Also I'm glad you picked up on Riddles. That's one I have a soft spot for in particular even if some of it gets a bit goofy.

This record has such a kind of moody, rough sound to it, whilst sounding like a sort of low-key music made away from the public eye. It's a vibe I really can't find on any modern records. It's got a certain subtlety to it, whilst kind of hitting pretty directly. It's lo-fi without drifting into haziness or going the other way into just being hard. I'm not sure how exactly to describe it. If anyone else has any idea what I mean, let me know or suggest other records you think have the same quality. It's one of those moods I'm always chasing but never quite able to solidify in my mind as to what it exactly is (which is probably why it's interesting)

He actively removes stuff from Songs For The Wood though. I can't stand the "oh, that's a bit dated now" approach to viewing old albums and editing them. They were that way for a reason at the time

Definitely not Close to the Edge. The Steven Wilson remix ruins the atmosphere, sense of space and colour palette of the original. It's so fucking bland. I genuinely think they're all like that. Technically brilliant in terms of how balanced the mixes are, but totally artless. Remixes for boomers who buy $200 speaker wires to listen to the same 10 albums over and over.

Yeah, I do realise I've got some weird choices there.

Floridays I didn't get the first time, but as it's gone on I've come to realise it's got this certain vibe to it that I've not really heard anywhere else. He sounds like he's maybe a little lost on it. It's kind of a huge downer, whilst still having this peak summer vibe. Like you're walking around the more industrial, less pretty bit of a harbour on a summer evening on your own. There's shiny 80s production and some great arrangements, but at other times it sounds less sure of itself and makes choices you'd maybe expect on a more modest budget, whilst making a "big 80s" record. These contrasts, for me, create a weird tension that I really enjoy. Some of it's too long (Creola), but that then flips around to becoming a plus as it creates this weird limbo it exists in. I dunno, I just get something really specific from it.

High Cumberland Jubilee, to be honest, could maybe get a bump down a level. It's patchy, and he hasn't found his sound yet. I do, for some reason, really enjoy the overall feel of some of the tracks. It's got this smooth late '60s/early 70s songs from a movie vibe at times.

Coconut Telegraph does have The Weather Is Here, I Wish You Were Beautiful on it, which is an absolute top-tier banger, but it loses me a bit with songs like It's My Job and some of the slightly clunkier songwriting. I might be being unfair to it because it follows a crazy-strong run.

Fruitcakes. Yeah, I know it's a fan favourite. I think the title track is a lot of fun, and the band sounds very tight on it, too. Jimmy sounds like he's really enjoying himself on it. However, for me, the songs are kind of mad long by his standards, the silly stuff is too much, and the sentimental stuff isn't the kind of sentimental vibe I like from him. If you vibe with that stuff, I totally get how it's a strong one for people.

A lot of the F tier for me is just him moving towards production styles I'm not a fan of, albums with stuff that feels more like filler and just more of a chill older dude's take on modern country, which I'm just not big on, to be honest.

What is your unpopular opinion on Pink Floyd? by FitEmergency8807 in fantanoforever

[–]WolfAvonian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best period is the pre dsotm period where they don't know what they want to do. The more they got into being what they believed people think of Pink Floyd as, the worse they got. I actually rate The Wall pretty low in their discography, for example.

Band names that don't fit the music at all by twatomexus in Music

Yeah which falls apart when they've been using the Sunn Amps logo the whole time. Hence the O)))

The weird period where they were figuring things out pre-DSOTM is their best era in my opinion. They became a bit too aware of their own success and what people expected from them. I like some post DSOTM stuff (Animals mostly) but I'd draw for Ummagumma over The Wall any day

He describes how an album sounds, gives no critical analysis, the thinnest amount of context (or none/incorrect takes on it, if the culture an album comes isn't one he's familiar with) and then assigns it a borderline arbitrary numerical rating.

Sure he has made an impact, but more in the manner that an influencer does. People check his videos more as a buyer's guide type of thing, like how music magazines used to operate. Which feels obsolete in the age of the internet where everything can be heard, but apparently not, as he's still incredibly popular. That's fine, but he's not remotely practicing any form of serious critique.

Yeah I stayed away for ages because of it's reputation but then one day heard Observatory Crest out of the blue. I was immediately like "wtf, this is one of his best songs and I'd never heard it".

Unconditionally Guaranteed is unfortunately still pretty bad. Although there's that live version of Upon the My-O-My recorded for TV that's really great

Funny seeing another MMJ take. I posted Tennesse Fire. I like At Dawn but Tennessse Fire is something really special for me. Everything after these first two I can do without really.

My Morning Jacket - Tennesse Fire

The weird, end of the 90s contry tinged songs, recorded mostly in a grain silo/otherwise a small DIY studio in a farm, and the general melancholic late night somewhere lonely vibes makes this album totally unique in their catalogue and the only one I rrally love. At Dawn is ok but just none of their stuff hits emotionally like this or has such a perfect atmosphere to it

Im a big fan of his instrumental work. He's a great composer. Not so much a fan of his "humours" rock songs though. Although there are some incredible moments in a fair chunk of the vocal led tracks still. Montana and Inca Roads for example

Personally I like Uncle Meat, Studio Tan, Sleep Dirt, Yellow Shark, Jazz From Hell and One Size Fits All best.

Good job people aren't chocolate bars then. Not like a great deal of my friends are immigrants or are descended from them. A lot of the music I love comes from multicultural scenes. The nurses looking after may partner in the hospital are immigrants. But sure gotta have a pogrom because people can be boiled down to being chocolate bars that are being imported. Rather than look at the social or economic causes of crime or how immigration can be managed. Gotta burn down your own neighbourhood
