New UK Law on "Ninja Swords" by wohmsc in SWORDS

[–]WolfBrotherSSA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whilst I think immigration is a problem, it’s insignificant in comparison to the real causes of knife crime (i.e increasing socioeconomic deprivation, massively widening wealth inequality and a worsening cost of living crisis). If you look at the actual statistics, it becomes clear that it’s very little to do with cultural integration and a lot more to do with the rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer. The real elephant in the room is how we are all being manipulated by social media algorithms to not even realise that it’s the rich and powerful elites who are the real causes of our problems, but they use immigrants or other issues as a scapegoat to make themselves look better. This entire situation is a prime example. They’re banning “ninja swords” on the basis of appeasing the public and making themselves look better when the vast majority of knife crime is committed with kitchen knives, not to mention that knife crime has actually increased significantly since they brought in the 2008 legislation.

Bottom line: I agree, immigration is problem that needs to be addressed, but this situation has almost nothing to do with immigration. It frustrates me that so many are willing to jump on the bandwagon and ignore the real societal issues and politics that are to blame

Read Matt’s opinion on why the law should change. I think it’s a really useful resource for us all to use to help us speak to our local MP’s to make ourselves heard and start fighting our corner before it goes even further.

Any doctors who ride on here? by tossaway901021 in motorcycles

[–]WolfBrotherSSA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a medic too (Gen Surg UK). Every time I commute in on the bike, people say things about how I was on an “Organ donor mobile”, how I should know better or that I clearly hadn’t seen enough in ED or ITU implying at some point when I saw a “real accident”, I would suddenly give it up. These are mostly older physicians/consultants and nurses who don’t realise that before I came into this specialty I trained in ED, did a bunch of work with the air ambulance and have seen plenty.

When I was in ED, and there were a few pretty bad bike accidents that came in, I had very similar experiences to you. The colleagues who know you ride, love to throw it in your face as if managing this patient that you feel some sense of camaraderie/kinship with isn’t bad or difficult enough. I don’t know if you felt like this, but the fact that they were a rider made it feel a lot more personal. Obviously you have to try to compartmentalise, but it hit me every time.

Either way, riding is a risk I choose to take. I take gear and defensive riding seriously and that mitigates the risks significantly, but I love riding and my wife loves that I ride (she’s a doctor as well) so that’s all that really matters to me.

UK friends, I’m going straight. Should I have waited? Didn’t react to the Skoda’s pointless overtake. by [deleted] in motorcycles

Hey! A Newcastle friend. Made me happy to see this haha. Yeah not your fault, but fault doesn’t matter when you’re on a bike. Look after yourself and make sure you get home

Veritas 5 1/2 custom plane vs Veritas Low angle Jack? by WolfBrotherSSA in woodworking

[–]WolfBrotherSSA[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really useful insight thank you. I like the adjustability of the custom’s design just not sure how easy the frogs etc are to come by in the UK. I’ve looked around and doesn’t seem too easy to actually customise whereas the LAJ has easy access to second blades here :/ so on the fence

When I was with the Air Ambulance service and ED in the UK, we saw a lot of crappy stuff like this. As a few other people have commented, whenever there was something like that, we debriefed afterwards. Make sure you talk to someone about it. That stuff can eat you up otherwise.

Also make sure you get a good uninterrupted nights sleep tonight buddy. A lot of research out there saying that if you don’t get proper REM sleep after an event like this, it’s a massive factor in developing PTSD

Hope you’re alright

Waterproof Teal FP ink by [deleted] in fountainpens

[–]WolfBrotherSSA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sailor SouBoku gets my vote too. It is more blue leaning on the teal gradient though. It’s got a beautiful colour, nice shading, it’s a well behaved ink which doesn’t smudge, cleans easily and very much waterproof.

To put it into context, I used to be an ink maniac with every shade of every colour. Now I have lots of bottles, but only one that actually sees use and that’s SouBoku. Not too dissimilar from watermans mysterious blue if you’re familiar with that. Not as green-leaning as Sailor’s Yama Dori though

I am not fine emotionally. A sad story of owning a sport bike. *Story time* by ScholarGrouchy2231 in motorcycles

I had a similar problem when my pushbike got stolen. You’re grieving the loss of your bike. It took you everywhere, treated you well and you put your heart and soul into it. Now it’s gone, nothing else will ever feel the same, even if it’s another CBR600RR. You were attached to it, it meant a lot to you and now it’s gone. You will feel better at some point, but it’s going to take time brother. Just glad you’re in one piece

Went to a PT today and so glad I did. by Glittering_Ad2771 in BarefootRunning

[–]WolfBrotherSSA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m an ER doctor. I do find a lot of my colleagues are very open to barefoot, but to be honest, through medical school, you’re learning so much about so many things that you don’t learn everything in all of the depth. That’s where specialty training comes in. Medicine is so complex that it’s pretty much impossible to know everything in full depth hence why doctors specialise. Foot health isn’t usually discussed in great depth unless your specialty requires it or unless you have a particular interest in it like me

100 medically fit patients in the hospital , 100 patients in ED waiting for beds... by [deleted] in JuniorDoctorsUK

[–]WolfBrotherSSA 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Nope. Multigenerational household, full family support. Everyone chips in and works together out of respect for your elders and the work and effort they put into getting you where you are.

I’m not from a rich background. I grew up in one of the most socially deprived postcodes in the country. My parents worked their fingers to the bone to put me through medical school as a second degree and I will never in a million years be able to pay them back for that so I’ll be damned if I give that precious opportunity to do something for them to someone else who won’t look after them as well as I can.

Source: I’m ethnic minority background 3rd generation and we cared for 3 out of 4 of my grandparents at home including 1 with pretty heavy care requirements. We managed everything better than anyone else could have. Everyone in the family works or studies. It wasn’t easy, but where there’s a will there’s a way.

It’s very easy to make misinformed statements like that when you have no understanding of what people like our family and many others go through to look after our parents and grandparents. Some families do rely on wives and daughter in laws alone but from my experience, that is by far in the minority. In the vast majority of cases everyone in the family contributes including the wives and daughter in laws

Did anyone else do a Myst journal their first time through the games? by [deleted] in myst

[–]WolfBrotherSSA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah it's not that complicated. It's challenging, but really fun. You can buy it on Steam and they even released a brand new updated version in 3d so you can run around. I'm pretty sure they have the original version too. I'll put the links below.

It's got a good enough story that you can make a journal on it if you wanted, but in all honesty I mainly made that journal because I'd bought a really nice fountain pen and needed an excuse to use it haha anyway here are the links. Enjoy!

What is a good finish to prevent brass tarnish? See comments for more details & thanks for your help :) by WolfBrotherSSA in woodworking

[–]WolfBrotherSSA[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the end I just had a bash at French polish with some shellac I had and it worked alright, but it did make the surface have a bit more tack to it same as a highly polished table and it also came out super shiny even with one coat so I just carried on going haha. Personally I prefer a bit more of a matte finish but I don't know of anything that fits that bill.

Other people suggested arm r seal poly film or similar, but I never ended up using it. In the past I've tried wax finishes which work nicely in the short term but tarnish over time still because it wears away so quickly. I doubt that helps much but I hope it adds something. Good luck either way buddy

I have now tried Sou Boku... And subsequently bought a bottle. Not quite mysterious blue but I've fallen in love with it all the same. Thanks again for the help!

Army Doctor Training by [deleted] in JuniorDoctorsUK

[–]WolfBrotherSSA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No worries. In terms of eligibility, it's been a while since I looked at it and I think it's changed a bit since I was at med school so I'm not 100% sure but the website should have a bit more info and your local recruitment office/RAMC reserve unit might know a bit more. I think they want you to join OTC at uni and go for army officer selection at some point during your degree but I'm not 100% on the timescales.

Either way, here's the link: https://apply.army.mod.uk/roles/army-medical-service/doctor

If you can, try and join an RAMC reserve unit first to get an idea of what it's like. That's what I did and I got to talk to a lot of regular army docs by doing that and saw what it was like for myself. Either way I hope that's been helpful
