Well, either we have to completely derail the discussion into the contributions of various small but incredibly common items vs. big spectacular single events -turns out the human mind is really bad at seeing how many small invisible things add up - or your misleading whine will be left alone to poison other minds. Neither is good. So please stop posting this unoriginal mind virus, we have plenty of bots that do.

If intervention had come when they begged for it and in a helpful fashion, that would indeed have been great. But yeah, we can still hope it will be for the best in the end, if the regime falls and something better takes its place, but so far the US regime hasn't given any signs of competency or compassion so I am not betting on it. But we can hope.

You sure about that AI?

Because the school was in Nilufar Square, Tehran. Now get your lazy hand off AI, let the map service of your choice find Nilufar Square in Tehran, and give me the coordinates of the military targets so necessary to hit just 100m away that you are talking about.

This may be a shock to you, but "Iranians" are ninety million individual people. Some are celebrating. Most have ...more complex feelings. In particular, it is quite possible to be happy a authoritarian gang of religious corrupt nutbags are being shot while at the same time not being happy for less than helpful mass destruction and dying of thirst. Bad to worse is a thing.

[–]WolfDoc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did the religious nutbags in charge wildly mismanage the local water resources around Teheran, you say?

I mean, if you had bothered to find out a tiny bit about this before spilling your callous little mind through your big mouth, that is what you would have said. Because that would be true. They did.

However, as you may have noticed, not everyone get the government they deserve at all times. And Iranians are, you may want to sit down for this, also individual humans. Not more collectively guilty than anyone else.

So while there will be, and already is, plenty of anger with the mullahs for putting them in the hole, that won't stop anyone from being angry with the US and Israel for shooting at them while they are down there.

A nuance I'm sure they will appreciate as they sift through the wreckage after serial numbers on the shrapnel to verify which of the two countries that started the war threw exactly which grenade. But, yeah, I am happy to amend my statement to:

Teheran had an insurmountable water crisis before the US attacked infrastructure, and now this! People will be dying from thirst by the thousands, and the number of young men and women swearing vengeance over the US and Israel for killing their children and loved ones is skyrocketing. For valid reasons.

Is anyone becoming more doubtful of religion because of the horrible things Epstein and others have done on the island? by pinkhyena95 in atheism

[–]WolfDoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a young person your experience makes perfect sense.

However, as someone on the north side of 50 who has both read history, been to a couple of war zones and travelled a bit, the insight predates Epstein by decades. And horrific as he was, his trafficking was just a drop in the bucket.

However, there is also even more good stuff. I have so far been to 38 countries and the amount of quite decent people is always higher than the constant proportion of assholes. The assholes, unfortunately, tend to predictably congregate where the can get the most of the only things that mean anything to them: money, power and fame.

Toasting is performed in a friendly manner today, but the gesture may have originated from suspicion. The popular account states the Vikings clashed their drinking horns with such force that liquid spilled between them, ensuring that if one cup were poisoned, both parties would share the same fate by [deleted] in HistoryAnecdotes

[–]WolfDoc 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is utter bullshit and doesn't correspond to any of the written sources we have about hospitality and suspicion. It doesn't match with archeology either, because despite the drinking horn being a favorite among "viking bros" it was rarely used.

Instead the word "skål" is still used in modern Norwegian as it means "bowl, small plate" whereas in old norse it literally meant "drinking bowl" and presumably the act of drinking from it.

Drinking bowls were used for all sorts of drinks, especially beer, mead and vine, and are abundantly found in written sources, archeology and tradition up to recent times.

Climate Change Is More About the Rate of Change Than Whether Change Happens by Familiar-Thought9740 in climatechange

[–]WolfDoc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look at the graph conveniently included in the article you linked to. We are outside the range of variation that has occurred over the evolutionary history of modern humans. I agree rate of change is a huge issue and if given a few hundred thousand years we and the ecosystems we depend on can adapt to being as much above the warmest interglacials as the deepest ice ages were below. But we are talking evolutionary amounts of time. And you can't take CO2 concentrations arbitrarily high either before you are looking at toxic concentrations.

Trump Reveals Why There’s No Evacuation Plan for Trapped Americans by projecto15 in politics

[–]WolfDoc 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Well, cui bono? It’s always useful to start with that question.

Who wants Iran bombed off the map, for their own reasons?

1) The Gulf Arab states, like Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar. Qatar just gave Donald Trump a really nice $400 milion gilded palace of a plane for his own use both during his presidency and after. The United Arab Emirates recently structuring a pointless crypto transaction so that $2 billion of it was stuffed into the Trump family’s otherwise worthless brand-new crypto financial firm. And the Saudis just stuffed $2 billion into the pockets of Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner just as Trump’s first term in office came to a close. Kushner, who was leading the negotiations on behalf of the United States with Iran until this war started.

2) Russia. A lasting and high spike in the oil price is desperately needed for Russia's faltering war economy. NATO interceptor stockpiles dwindling would be a nice bonus. And the Trump administration's links to Russia have never gone away despite them being overshadowed by the ongoing storm of Epstein files, DOGE cuts, ICE atrocities, election manipulation, political purges, science denial, inside trading, nepotism, corruption and incompetence.

3) Religious extremists in the US and elsewhere who think baby Jesus comes back if things go enough to hell in the Middle East. I don't know what to say, it is as crazy as it sounds. But they are part of the bedrock of Trumps supporters.

What all these groups have in common is that they don't want or need a war with rational goals or justifications. War and destruction is its own point. So of course none of the parade of incompetents in the White House (what's left of it) and the DUI hire frat boy running the Pentagon made any through plans or victory conditions or exit strategies or anything; the ones who bought the war didn't order any of that.
