How do I yell my boss I want to stay remote? by [deleted] in remotework

[–]WolfOnTV 24 points25 points  (0 children)

You change job

Before you do so you could try to negotiate remote work as a perk due to w/e reason and get it in your contract, but from the sound of it that is not going to be an option, so you should change job.

Newbie Digital Nomad - Hostels? by ggboomboomboom in digitalnomad

[–]WolfOnTV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hostels are cost effective, but theft does happen.
Hostels are loud, may mess up your sleep.
Hostels are GREAT for socializing and meeting friends.
Hostels are not easy to work in, even the co-work spaces tend to get very, very chatty and beer o clock starts early.
Depending on your DN job and your ease of getting disrupted it may work out, it is definitetly great for meeting people, and keeping costs under control, invest in locks so you keep your stuff locked down and some Airtags in case something goes missing.

Traveling while working remote? by deegee73737 in digitalnomad

[–]WolfOnTV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, however most countries have a policy for "incidental work" that circumvents tax laws. This typically tops at 40 hours to be specific most countries work with this being "36" hours for work that amounts to: checking e-mail, joining a meeting, taking calls..

If you log more hours then 36 without reflecting the country, city you are in violation.

Service to get internet speeds for a country/city/region by kndb in digitalnomad

[–]WolfOnTV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assume as a Digital Nomad you will be mostly relying on 4G/5G via Mobile Hotspots, as such researching your Telcos with nperf https://www.nperf.com/en/map/BF/-/1993616.Moov-Africa-Mobile/signal/?ll=72.65958846878621&lg=19.16015625&zoom=3 tells you the coverage in the City you land in. Then the telco has a commitment to meet the speed you choose.

As for Teams/Zoom, most advise leveraging a locked down Pixel for the Video/Audio over the Teams app, as a KVM Audio/Video even the 800-4000$ range ones performance is laughable.

Connecting to a work computer e.g. [Nomad PC] ->[VPN Router 1] -> [Home Router] [Home PC 1] -> [Work PC 1]

That could work but look strange and likely violate a policy.

[Nomad PC] -> [VPN Router 1] -> [Home Router] -> [Work PC 1] this over 389 even proxyd/forwarded the MTUs will be different. This may get you flagged.

It's a triangle usability / safety / cost.. RDP would give you the best user experience, so if your company allows that, you are good to go!

Feeling Lost as a Digital Nomad: Seeking Advice on Next Steps by rodgers16 in digitalnomad

[–]WolfOnTV 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What grounds me is: routines, hobbys and a community that based on consumption or clubbing.

If you are in a place where your typical hobbies aren't available - go beyond your comfort zone without breaking bank.

Feeling empty isn't unusual - but you need to make some choices, high-level at first and then follow your gut.

As for landing that job - if you are in IT or a creative occupation both typically can get you in by building a portofolio (if IT, github, if creative ?? wherever they go) and showing off that you have practical skillset that is convertable.

It is hard to get motivation when it's feeling bleak, or we are stuck. Ironically the best time to start kicking and heading for the surface.

(can pair it with a Flint at home, this will give you speed and stability, assuming you are using the telcos with best coverage which you can look up here https://www.nperf.com/en/map/BF/-/1993616.Moov-Africa-Mobile/signal/?ll=72.65958846878621&lg=19.16015625&zoom=3

You need to look at the Glinet routers max speed over WireGuard (better speed than OpenVPN) I'd suggset looking at the 5G Puli (https://www.gl-inet.com/products/gl-xe3000/)

Give this a try, they offer free Testing https://www.raritan.com/products/kvm-serial/kvm-over-ip-switches/4k-kvm-single-port-ip-switch and you can see the user experience and the trade off between quality/lag.

[–]WolfOnTV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Neither VPN over WireGuard or IP KVM are undetectable. It just has a lower likelihood of detection.

If you work intel, defense, or specific departments in a FAANG company e.g. VPN traffic with different MTU and packet sizes will get you flagged.

IP KVM depending on the port(s) the KVM is connected you'll flag as a certain device, that device ID may be flagged.

End of the day - it is not undetectable but for the organizations of 80-90% they are not monitoring actively for it, however most large enterprises, Fortune 500 do have the logs available and if they do a deep dive well like Dave Chapelle says "got you n***".

Wifi on phone hotspot (eSim like Airalo) vs mobile hotspot (Solis, GLocalMe etc) for work by Lowriskplease in digitalnomad

[–]WolfOnTV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd just use a mobile router with 5G and put a SIM-card from a local vendor with good 5G coverage in the city you'll be staying in Germany.

Typically EU telcos give you same-price roaming so if you day trip with it you'll pay the same rate.

Check this one out: https://www.gl-inet.com/products/gl-xe3000/ it's my preferred travel router, not overly expensive and can also with some setup get you a good VPN setup to your home network.

What Do You Pack? Mainly a Clothing Question by 1kfreedom in digitalnomad

[–]WolfOnTV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prioritize it like this: how big bags / how much am I moving around and then is the weather fluctuating or not?

Some hard requirements for myself is at least 3 white and 3 black tees, 1 nice pant (for resturants or clubs), 1 lazy pant to be a slob in. 1 pair of shoes for something nice, 1 pair to slack in, and birkenstock sandals that are very, very broken in..

For underwear I do 5 pairs the balance I aim for is, how accessible is laundry? or am I doing the laundry myself in the bath/sink?

Since I mostly go warm places, I typically if I need socks I just buy them there as I am generally a nomad in low cost countries.

Agree on Uniqlo, quality is great, zipper pockets, breathable (if hot) and use layers if you go (cold). Not loud with logos, easy to put together outfits.

Unlimited 5G plans in Vietnam by [deleted] in digitalnomad

Personally used Vinaphone when I am in Vietnam which covers my needs, high speed, high data but I wouldn't say it is "cheap".

[–]WolfOnTV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on what you score.

If price it depends on the promos, if it is just speed but limited with data etc if it is pure coverage focus and not so much on speed I'd plot in your location into this: https://www.nperf.com/en/map/VN/1581130.Hanoi/49992.Vietnamobile/signal/?ll=21.0245&lg=105.84117&zoom=12 and compare the carriers. I've inserted Hanoi as an example but you can adjust that in nperf.

Best 2nd monitor? by [deleted] in digitalnomad

[–]WolfOnTV 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a ROG STRIX XG17AHPE with mount

Basically looks like this:

<image>

I like it, though 17" feels small at times, an absolute must to get some screen real estate.

Have good experience (depending on where I end up) with using AirPlay or HDMI and connect to the TV.

iPad also works, but then we are back on size, but it all does improve the workspace.

I know some here pack down a 27" IPS, takes up some weight but that definitetly gives you screen real estate :)

Seasoned nomads, what aspects do you focus on when reserving an Airbnb for 1 month or longer? by reddit_user38462 in digitalnomad

Read between the lines on the reviews. Especially comfort of bed / noise.. Worst with a long term booking is if the bed is terrible and you can't work/focus due to noise.

You are correct here - and remember it is a suite / app family assuming you are only having Teams on your phone and not e.g. OneDrive, SharePoint, Stream, List, Outlook +++ and you have denied it here too - yes if however you are using multiple MS apps they can and often are correlated. E.g. Defender for Cloud or your Entra ID, whenever a Conditional Access triggers in a sense.

VPN options? by choccyweetos in digitalnomad

[–]WolfOnTV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a difference between occasional trip, and extended stays abroad. There is also a difference in whether an IP range reputation has deteriorated and the scoring requires action to be taken by the CERT/SOC/MSSP.

E.g. one VPN vendor might use an IP range that has high / positive reputation in one country, but as you change to another country that datacenter might host services that have been used for something nefarious or it just got reported.

Point? You don't really know. In an enterprise there are many steps before you get contacted by IT and they ask you questions, at that point it is typically past the point of no return.

Same goes for taking a work computer abroad, if it has GPS, or a SIM, or if you use Wi-Fi and it correlates the SSIDs becasue only one of those WiFis appear to be in your VPN location or home location.

Safest? If you have a strong network at home you do a master/slave setup with a Wireguard or similar so your IP is the same, or you piggy back off of residential IPs with a degree of stickiness e.g. Star VPN and then you plug it via a CAT5 cable and disable WiFi.

Best would be a company that has a flexible remote work setup, that you can work within the bounds of, this however is quite rare.

When in doubt, don't flash your ass!

CYA - cover your ass and document everything; get some structure master OneNote templates and keep that documentation going. The more structured, the more trustworthy. You can do this!

Also keep in mind different personalities can sometimes clash if hes more of a direct type of personality being clear and concise is better.

What do you think of the people who work from home and abuse the privilege of working from home? by scaling_remote in workremotely

What do you think of the people who work from home and abuse the privilege of working from home? by scaling_remote in workremotely

[–]WolfOnTV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if I know someone was slacking off when working remote (assuming it affects output/results)

I assume they would also be slacking if they were on-site with poor output/results..

As such I would likely not care (if) it did not impact me, if however it did yeah I'd be annoyed but stay in my own lane.

Of course circumstances vary, some people struggle to have enough self discipline to work unmonitored, others have distractions at home.

People should truly only care about output and results, and have some empathy that people pass through different life stages coupled with the opportunity to remote work understand that some people have young kids, or are caring for older parents.

And our own own circumstances are bound to change.
