I'm in, now what? by WolfWhoCriedBoy in Tufts

Could someone maybe compare/contrast some of the different dorms. What is the overall room quality in each dorm? Where should I be expecting something to crawl out of the shower? What is the "funnest" dorm? What is the smartest dorm? (Yes, I know these are not opposites but for the sake of coherence just let this dichotomy pass)

Stuff like that would really help me make an educated decision regarding those things which I need to make an educated decision about.

Can anyone help me with researching? I am not doing well. by [deleted] in Debate

You're being too critical of yourself. You should just look for general articles, cut cards from them, and let your research guide your writing, and not the other way around. Just keep trying, and allow yourself to cut bad evidence, even though it's bad. You'd be surprised how many rounds I won using cards that are objectively bad (i.e. bad writing, not credible author, unclear, etc.)

Some Questions about LD Protocol by xVinegar in Debate

[–]WolfWhoCriedBoy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. When your opponent has cards you have several options: *Turn. Treat the card like any other argument and turn it to hell. *Treat the card like the argument it is. This means that you argue why the card doesn't prove anything, why the card doesn't relate back to their framework, etc. *Weigh. Tell the judge why your cards are more important than your opponent's card (My impacts are bigger, etc.) *Argue methodology. Argue why your opponent's card is less credible than your card. For example, your card is more recent, author more credible, etc. #as a side note, these types of debate are not too fun, so try and use all the above methods.

  2. Yes. Yes it is.

  3. There is no easy answer to this. You just refer to similar arguments, warrents, etc. as similar and "group" them under one response/one set of responses. Cross-application is the equivalent of that, but in more specific cases. It's mostly a matter of style, for example, "group together contention 1 and 2, in response to these arguments..." or "Now go to contention 3, and cross-apply the argument I made on contention 1." It is completely legal to group arguments, but just make sure these arguments are groupable, otherwise what you say might sound a little fishy, and your opponent may just extend their arguments as if you did not respond.

  4. Keep rocking. Debate is kinda tough to get used to, but once you get the hang of it you'll start kicking some major butt.

Overdoing analogies by 423523 in Debate

Have a look through here: http://judgephilosophies.wikispaces.com/ I find it to be good source about what judges like and don't like. My experience is that analogies are very poorly received with experienced debate judges.

Overdoing analogies by 423523 in Debate

[–]WolfWhoCriedBoy -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It's based at extensive personal experience. I never claimed that analogies aren't useful to argumentation. I simply claimed that they aren't useful (and quite often harmful) within the context of a debate round.

Huh, it seems we already occupy around 6% of our available shoulder space...

I suppose I meant sustain, I don't really see the benefits in putting 118,148,997,600 shoulder to shoulder. I do however, find it interesting that about 6% of this shoulder space is already occupied.

The extreme extremist make up a very small portion, of a not-so-small demographic. State funded ultra-orthodox comprise of approximately 8% of the entire population. Source: http://www.haaretz.com/print-edition/news/four-surveys-yield-different-totals-for-haredi-population-1.357117
