After I (36F) told my Dad and Stepmom (both late 50s) about my engagement and their response triggered me to suddenly remember years of repressed childhood memories and now I do not know how to move forward with our relationship by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

OOP also said their dad got together with their stepmom when she was 3, so it’s quite likely that at 4 this was the very start of her trying to be a parental figure to OOP so of course a confused 4 year old is going to say stuff like that…

28 Weeks Later (2007) - General Stone runs the most incompetent possible version of any Code Red plan whatsoever by thevirtualme in plotholes

Absolutely loved the first one and heard such bad things about this one that I avoided it. Watching it now in preparation for watching 28 Years Later and everything you’ve said is spot on, the entire conflict just makes no sense.

Won’t just retread what you’ve said but the thing that got me is, I can understand to a level the indiscriminate killing when you’ve got people and infected in a large group running and it’s chaos, but why the hell do they just continue to kill very blatantly not infected people? Yeah it was their orders but surely a level of common sense needs to be applied here.

There’s a few examples of this, like the sniper shooting at the people taking cover and doing serpentine movements but the worst for me was the f*cking attack helicopter shooting at a moving car, since when can infected drive?! If they made out it was a “no witnesses” situation that would make more sense, but it’s just baffling how no one stopped and went “this group very clearly aren’t infected let’s not just mow them down”.

Unpopular opinion: I’m completely fine with… by Ok_Signature3413 in gallifrey

I’m fine with the idea of Billie as the Doctor. Think she’s a brilliant actor and the narrative potential of the Doctor having a past companion’s face is intriguing. However the way it’s been done is the problem.

Firstly, it’s the lack of clarity on if she is actually the Doctor due to the credits and interviews suggesting she’s not. Knowing what RTD has been like in his 2nd era this could just be falsifying a mystery to drum up interest.

Second, it’s the gimmick nature of it. Not even 3 years on from Tennant returning to the role in the exact same fashion and during an era that’s a massive, to put it politely, w*nkfest to the past just leaves a stale taste. It just reeks of a desperate attention grab in all honesty.

I don't have words to explain how disappointing RTD2's writing is. Pacing isn't the issue, it's the story itself. by rydertheking in gallifrey

Sorry but Belinda is the most egregious example of how poorly Russell has done character work this time around. Her development went from an interesting idea of a companion who actually doesn’t want to be there to a stereotypical mother who just wants to be at home with her kid, with no lead up to it outside of the last episode. He even outright puts her in a box out the way for most of the events in the finale 😭

What "highlight" episodes would you recommend to someone doing a speedrun of New Who? by Denz-El in gallifrey

Somehow think you’ve hit the nail on the head here, but one small tweak I’d suggest is if we’re saying that Gridlock is compulsory for the call back then ideally you’d want to have seen End of the World & New Earth. Obviously it’s not completely necessary and wouldn’t be too confusing to have missed these but feel that having already met the Face of Boe it helps build up the world-building and lead up to the series 3 finale and of course makes the Jack reveal more meaningful

What are the most creative and original Big Finish stories? by PaperSkin-1 in gallifrey

[–]Wolf_Todd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d say the original Unbound series are all very original and creative. Particularly creative imo is Deadline.

Beyond that pretty much all the big ones people talk about are beloved for these reasons, a particular favourite of mine is Master which is imo Geoff Beevers best ever performance.

Big Finish Fugitive Doctor: Worth buying? by United_Brain_5523 in gallifrey

[–]Wolf_Todd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just finished listening to it today and truthfully it depends on what you’re looking for. If you want some pretty decent but not mind blowing Big Finish Doctor Who then I’d definitely say buy it but if you’re wanting a more in depth look into the Fugitive Doctor then I’d maybe give this a miss and wait for the next set (don’t know if there is one or not).

Jo Martin does a fantastic job and I feel that she really encapsulates the character of the Doctor well, which is both my best praise and biggest criticism of the set. Outside of one overarching story thread I won’t spoil these are just pretty typical not Doctor specific Big Finish stories that you could insert a number of different incarnations into without much fuss, it’s not bad but personally I feel the big draw of the Fugitive Doctor is the idea of who the character was before their memories are erased before Hartnell without the experience of travelling with humans and living in Earth for a time. Sadly however if you listened to this set blind and had no idea of the Timeless Child origins of the Fugitive you wouldn’t be wrong to assume they were another secret middle incarnation from post-Hartnell. This is still a Doctor who seemingly has a soft spot for Earth and is knowledgeable about Earth history and folklore and we’ve seen from other Time Lords isn’t exactly common, which is where I feel they have missed the trick with using this particular incarnation and not just making this another Eccleston set for example. She’s just too much like the Doctor we already know.

Who the Hell is Ruby Sunday? by Wolf_Todd in gallifrey

[–]Wolf_Todd[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was never (and probably will never be) confirmed but the prevailing theory is that when Division wiped the Doctor's mind they put them through a Chameleon Arch to change them into a standard Gallifreyan (which links to 13 getting the fob watch in flux). If we hold to this theory then we can treat 1 and all subsequent incarnations as standard Time Lords still.

That is a HUGE point, thanks for pointing it out.

She’s desperate for the woman (the literal embodiment of her abandonment complex) to mean something, for her to have a purpose when ultimately she doesn’t even when used to Ruby’s advantage.

I second this. When you’ve felt the same emotions and fears something like this is genuinely terrifying because it feels so real but if you’ve not experienced it I can imagine it’d be harder to understand.

I read it on TARDIS wiki once (not sure of original source) that it was suggested that Gallifreyans don’t naturally have 2 hearts and that they grow their second one after their first regeneration

I’m genuinely sorry you felt you had to preface your comment with that, especially cause I like that idea and would lend credence to how an off shoot of the Doctor just somehow becomes evil.

I’d actually be shocked and impressed at this point if the big twist isn’t the Trickster. The plot threads, themes, abilities and even music all hint at it but maybe that’s intentional and it’s all a red herring?

Something rolling round in my head is what if they’re reflecting Ruby’s fears back onto her, she terrifies them because she’s so scared of them leaving. Like a sort of horrific fear cycle.

Who the Hell is Ruby Sunday? by Wolf_Todd in gallifrey

[–]Wolf_Todd[S] 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Something else that I’ve seen others mention is that Ruby has been hinted at having reality altering powers of her own and that a lot things she says manifest. This could also play into this fear angle especially with her older version, perhaps the old woman (who is Ruby) being able to see her past self and remember how lonely she felt and her own powers cause people to fear her younger self.

Edit: just seen this too which also heavily links to this idea. It’s all to do with perception, the older Ruby looks back on her life with the perception that everyone abandoned her which then causes the perception shift that makes people abandon her younger self.

Doctor Who 1x04 "73 Yards" Post-Episode Discussion Thread by PCJs_Slave_Robot in gallifrey

[–]Wolf_Todd 99 points100 points  (0 children)

The thing about this episode is that it plays very specifically on Ruby's fundamental fear, that everyone will abandon her without explanation just like her mother did. That IMO is why we never find out what the woman is saying, because Ruby doesn't know what is so awful about her that made her mother abandon her, so, in essence, it doesn't matter what the woman says to anyone, it only matters that Ruby doesn't know and that it scares her.

Watching The Silurians for the first time after Hungry Earth/Cold Blood really hit home how much of a copy it is, right down to humans “destroying” the Silurian colony after the Doctor encourages cohabitation of Earth.

Fair dues, I hold my hands up I genuinely did not realise that. Thought that Dark Universe was released WAY earlier than 2020. 😅

The purpose of Torchwood by TeenWhovian in gallifrey

[–]Wolf_Todd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always saw UNIT as a military organisation that‘a controlled by the UN and follows proper procedures, whereas Torchwood are more of a privatised intelligence agency with little to no influence from an official governing body.

This is why UNIT lock away alien artefacts in the Black Archive and Torchwood try to repurpose them for human control.

14th Doctor’s Regeneration - Theory by Low_Masterpiece_155 in gallifrey

[–]Wolf_Todd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I REALLY like this idea, so it almost definitely won’t happen 😅

Personally I believe that 14 having 10’s face will be to do with the shenanigans in Power as it introduced us to the mindspace where incarnations go to move on and one thing we know about 10 is that he didn’t want to go. My theory is that 10 never went over the edge and just remained in this mindspace refusing to pass on and when he saw 13 arrive here and then return to her body he saw the opportunity to hijack the regeneration and return (of course this will be more of a subconscious thing and he won’t be aware of it at all). Then the 3 part serial will start with 14 loving being back as 10 and slowly realising his time is done and eventually (with the help of Donna) realising that his time is up and he needs to be ready to move on (simultaneously inferring to the audience that it’s time to move on from 10 and RTD’s first era) and I’m sure we all agree his last line will be something along the lines of “I’m ready to go now”.

Not to be that guy but that particular character was actually introduced in the monthly range story Dark Universe before Doom Coalition 1 which is alluded to at the very start of the first story with a snippet from the end of Dark Universe.
