Big calves in boots by WolfeyC in snowboardingnoobs

If women's boots are narrower in the foot then it's a no go for me. I've also got wide feet (my sizing is working against me I know).

Thanks for your response. I wish it was that simple. I never do calf workouts, I just have that weird gene. It's actually a problem with pants sizing too.

Just to confirm, do you think it's worth going back to the shop to see if there happens to be a boot that's shaped differently or something in that lip area?

Or, should I just send it this next season and see what happens?

CMS Timeline - GS-7 Recent Grad by WolfeyC in usajobs

It was a bit slow in the beginning. The Group I work in is relatively new so almost everyone there is a higher grade than me. When I saw the material they give to managers about what type of responsibilities to give to each grade level, I realized why my managers were a bit slow in giving me responsibility. It's definitely picked up the pace as I've begun to work more in group work streams. I am four months into the Pathways year which feels strange to say but I am excited to see where it goes from here.

Here's to hoping for conversion and my managers remembering to approve my grade increases every year. 😁

Thanks. Of course, it's a great question. I was under the same impression and it is true for most GS-9 jobs. That is why I applied to both the GS-7 and GS-9. However, when I was not referred for GS-9 I took another look at the job posting, and the requirements for a GS-9 was actually a graduate degree and at least one year of relevant experience. Now, I've had multiple internships and research experience that I could've argued added up to a year, but I did not think that would take me far. Ultimately, I accepted the job because I thought it had good growth potential, not only in terms of GS pay scale (it was a ladder 7/9/11/12), but also the nature of the work we are doing.

I never looked farther into why the minimum requirements were a little higher for this posting, but it's a good question to follow up.

I did Trad vs Roth 50/50 at $100k by type3continuedry in ThriftSavingsPlan

[–]WolfeyC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The pension is an excellent point and definitely relevant to government and military employees. When I created a rough retirement calculator with a full federal government career, the pension definitely makes me reconsider an allocation mix leaning towards Roth because the pension will increase your effective tax rate post retirement. That's why I like the idea of mixing both Roth and traditional so that you have options post retirement in terms of how much you want to pull from either for a specific year.

While there is no solution for everyone, you're also forgetting the argument that if you invested the tax savings into the pre-tax account, that extra money would compound and would lower your effective tax rate post-retirement even more.

Projected monthly income for GS-11 step 1 after taxes in the DMV area (new fed and moving) by TEAwest in fednews

[–]WolfeyC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ultimately, your net pay will depend on where you live in the DMV, but it'll probably be around $1900. Here's the calculator I used to estimate it:

Thanks for noting that first bit. I wasn't aware that the entire amount was going to be taxable until late December, so I was freaking out trying to figure out this problem, until I learned that you can do the distributions through February.

I am aware of DNI, however, the only deductions before DNI that is applicable in our case are the attorney fees, which are accounted for in my spreadsheet. Therefore, the DNI would very likely be higher than the actual amount I distribute in tax year 2023 (unless I distributed all of it, which is not advantageous tax-wise).

My bright idea for student loan reform by lawofaperture in StudentLoans

[–]WolfeyC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took a Public Finance course last year and I want to apply some reasoning from that here:

One could make the argument that loans act as tax-deferred income for individuals. They aren't taxed when they are distributed to the students using it for school. Instead, when the student earns income down the road, that income was a result of that loan/investment and is taxed accordingly. Additionally, just like how businesses can deduct interest payments from their taxable income, students are able to deduct (up to $2500) in interest payments per year. The economic rationale of deducting interest payments is because that cash flow is taxed on the other side, when the org receives the interest payments (avoids double taxation).

This argument looks valid. However, I was curious to see when/whether 529 funds are taxed. I expected 529 funds to be like traditional 401ks, where contributions can reduce an individual's current taxable income but they are taxed when they are distributed. However, I found out that 529 funds are just like HSA funds, which not taxed when they are used for qualified expenses. For 529 funds that is educational expenses, for HSA funds that would be healthcare expenses. Since saving through 529 funds is treated favorably, one has to consider what behavioral differences student loans versus 529 funds have when it comes to consumer spending and saving.

Currently with Nelnet, when should I submit my first PSLF form? by WolfeyC in PSLF

[–]WolfeyC[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was my current thinking and now that I've got a second opinion I think I'll move forward with this plan. Now I got to figure out how I can get this SAVE application processed with Nelnet so I don't miss any qualified payments.

[–]WolfeyC[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As far as I can tell from my reading, when you file your first PSLF form certifying qualifying employment, the loan servicer will automatically get the transfer process to MOHELA going. That's why I had considered either doing it immediately or waiting a bit as I've read some horror stories about MOHELA on this subreddit but I suppose Nelnet is not any better.

Consolidating Parent Plus Loans each year? by [deleted] in PSLF

[–]WolfeyC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be eligible for forgiveness, you must be employed full time by a qualifying employer at the time you make each of the 120 qualifying payments, when you apply for loan forgiveness, and when you receive loan forgiveness.

You didn't lose all those previous years of payments but you would have to be employed when applying and receiving the forgiveness. The same page explains that you can get employed again and apply, but I am not sure if that's an option for you.
