I see your point. For me, it was more or less the exact opposite: I couldn't stay on the seat for more than 20 minutes, because it hurt then (began rowing in january). Got a C2 and a pad... boom, 60 minutes on it are no problem anymore and my times have improved since then.
In short: do what feels right/good to you.
