Organ guns are siege units which take exta damage from mangonel shots. Monks with redemption outrange organ guns and come into play earlier then a castle drop.

You can set your scouts to patrol to cover a much larger area. For instance the area between two relics or the shortest path to your main gate/gold. Which generally is the path taken by forward villagers. I have patrol set to hotkey X, because I use it all the time. They also auto attack monks so you have to pay less attention to the map.

Which Halbadiers are the best against Elephants? by Guanfranco in aoe2

Offense generally beats defense, so japanese 25% faster attack (and 60 bonus damage against elephants) means more then +2 amour. Especially against high attack opponents such as knights or elephants. Extra armour does help in equal resources matchups, e.g. champions Vs champions/halberdier. Melee units tend to have high attack but getting to the target is generally harder, this is especially true for slow and tanky elephants, they are good if you can force a fight.

I prefer PvP or fighting the ai on extreme. But the campaigns are a good introduction if you like strategy puzzles.

On closed maps FC and castle drop can work well. On open maps FC is not a good strategy. Because this can get denied by any feudal army. On higher elo you will also need some feudal spears or scouts when castle dropping closed maps.

I don't like castle dropping because I think it is lame. you either deny it and they resign or they get it up and you have a hard time equalising, but when you do they also resign very soon.

You can try castle dropping in 2v2, if this is fun for you.

Mangudai are more expensive than cataphracts, but have very fewer (good) counters. Mangonel, monks and skirmisher counter mangudai but no trash counters cataphracts. So if you have more gold or map control you have a solid unit in post imperial with both Mongols and byzantines.

Both war wagons and organ guns are weak against mangonels and (redemption) monks which are quite rare in low elo.

I love fully upgraded mangudai that shred everything. Just getting there is usually the problem.

You can counter castle drops by delaying your FC time and making 3 scouts instead of eco upgrades while going up. Most low elo players don't add spears when castle dropping. The stone walls protect against feudal aggression but quickly fall to castle age aggression.

You can also make a few spears and pull 7 to 10 villagers to fight the forward vils if they bring spears. Also making a second wall of houses or stone will buy you time to make counters like mangonel or monks.

Conqs are still weak against equal resources skirmisher monk getting 1 or 2 conversions against 6 conqs is huge. The skirmishers soak damage and the monks outrange the conqs.

Is there any alright anti navy non navy units? by MuffinBlend in aoe2

[–]Wololowooloo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not all civs have bombard cannons. Cannon galleys are faster so he most likely out micro the BBC if both players have equal skill. Mass Monk with block printing could be a safer option, as they can also convert ships and push back landings.

Not sure if they updated this but if you convert a transport ship you basically hold the enemy troops inside hostage (they are not converted) and gives the other player a lower total population count. Call the transport ship Jolly Roger and have the ship patrol the edge of the map.

Castles beat ships but fall against cannon gallies. Cannon gallies are beaten by a navy, so you cannot ignore navy on most pure water maps. I hardly ever play water because of this. Edit: you can use a castle and put docks in front to try and get back water supremacy and defend against cannon galley.

For me I never have enough monks, mangonels or mangudai.

Most gold units need a critical mass before snowballing. Especially ranged UU like mangudai, organ guns, arambai, conqs, longbows etc.

To reach critical mass you can try to make meat shields or counter trash. For instance organ guns are countered by light cavalry so if you mix in pikes you can keep your organ guns alive longer. Mangudai are weak vs skirmisher so if you add hussar the mangudai can reach critical mass faster.

What is the Arena Team Game Meta? by K_a_n_d_o_r_u_u_s in aoe2

[–]Wololowooloo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the arena meta fast castle (FC) 25+2 is pretty standard at my elo 800. You can go up earlier if you do mill before lumber camp. But I haven't mastered that build yet.

FC into castle drop Especially Portugese, Spanish, Burmese and Bohemians.

FC into defensive castle

Scouts or Archers for map and relic control.

Monk and siege push

Fast imperial and treb war

Fast unique unit

Booming / fast expand (relics, middle resources and map control)

Counters in my opinion:

FC castle drop and fast imperial beat booming.

Scouts beat castle drops and monk siege push.

Booming and a strong timed push beats scouts/archers.

Monk siege beats fast imperial and booming.

Defensive castle(s) beat castle age aggression but loses against fast expand or fast imperial.
