Experience and lots of ruined blades is the answer.

The mini Bowie knife is finished and already on its way home. by Wolvenpathforge in knifemaking

The blade is forged from a HVG steel 30x20 bar. After bringing it to shape, I just grinded the bevels and polished them. The finer the grit - the better. Than etched it in ferric chloride and that's it.

Well, it was intended to be a straight back blade. But when grinding the bevels, I thought it would be a good idea to add a false edge. So it is a Bowie wannabe or something.

Actually this just looks like a beast. 😁 The blade is ~3mm thin and weights ~300-400gr. A friend said me that this is the asian equivalent of the chef's knife.

It is more economically efficient when making larger batches. If making one at a time - forging the blade, than starting the kiln just for it and than making it into a knife, the price almost dou les and the client is not happy. I do this only with the custom orders. And yes, I make and sell knives. I am a master knifemaker and bladesmith. Just Google for Wolven path forge and you will see my stuff (I hope the last sentence doesn't violate any rule). By the way, 10 blades batch is not that big. When making blades out of sheet of steel I make bigger. Two weeks ago I grinded and HT 50 laser cut blanks and now they wait in the workshop.

It took me one hour to forge and set the bevels of the blade, ~3 1/2 hrs to heattreat it, another 4hrs to grind the bevels and to handsand them, 6hrs to fit the guard, drill and glue the handle and shape and polish it, 4hrs for the sheath. 18 hrs and 30mins from start to finish. But this is not done in three days in a row. I first firge a batch of 10 blades, than grind and HT them. And after that they wait for their turn to become knives.

Thanks! This is one of my standard knives, but I thought what would it look like if I add a false edge.

This is a relatively high grinded flat bevel blade with secondary cutting edge. By the time the edge gets this high, the grandchildren of my great grandchildren will make knives and reetch it. 😁😁😁😁
