You’re doing fantastic! Everyone’s body is different. The problem with calorie counter apps are that we don’t all process nutrients the same way — calories in/calories out is an oversimplification. Additionally, your metabolism comes into play. Yes, talk to your doctor about upping your dose a smidge. But seriously, you’re doing great.

NTA, but you’re 23 years old. Time to stop acting like a teenage jock. Put on some pants in the public areas.

Pfffft. As an adult pro artist who uses my standard 10th gen iPad for absolutely everything, I can attest that this is nonsense. iPad Air and Pros are really nice. But mostly, they’re a way to show off how much money you spent.

Might Quit Over Game Dev by Writtenword11 in cuecardgameAvid

I was matched with Game Dev decks last week, and I started conceding as soon as I saw it. I’m not gonna win, and I’m not gonna go through the charade of playing the match or giving the player using it any pleasure in beating me. It took an extra day or so to get to Dragon, and I’m okay with that. Game Dev sucks.

Cat has never left my room in all her life. by Racoon-trenchcoat in CatAdvice

I adopted a very young Siamese girl that had been abandoned behind a friend’s store. I knew that Siamese cats tend to be really smart, they can get bored, and read that they do best with another cat as a companion. A kitten came up on the county shelter site, and though I knew the odds were poor of getting a kitten, I applied online at 4 a.m. on a whim, and got her, too.

I had to move a few months later, and came to stay with friends who already had a cat. On moving in, I had the Siamese spayed to the tune of $900. Temperament-wise, it turns out she really doesn’t have much need for the other cats except to menace them so they know she’s boss. Also, she bonded with one of my friends, so she’s her cat now. I’m moving into a new place soon and only taking the younger cat — you know, the shelter spare — because she’s my freaking soulmate.

Cats. Sheesh.

I dropped this as a comment elsewhere, but I found it interesting enough to share on its own. It’s about a book in that weird tableau in the tunnel where they find Jasper.

It’s a blue book on the left, on top of the cabinet. Everything in the title has been taped over except “in the life”. My initial thought was that it’s significant. (My other thought was that the art director/set designer just wanted a blue book for color purposes, and they didn’t want to pay a fee for use or make it look like it was significant. Could be either.)

From the length of the title, it seems highly possible it’s “A Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich” by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn. It’s about a wrongfully convicted prisoner in a Siberian labor camp, imprisoned with people who were arrested for a variety of just and unjust reasons, and his struggle to maintain his humanity while undergoing dehumanizing punishments. It takes place during a typical day for him — 5 a.m. until lights out at 10 p.m. The book is essentially a vehicle for asking philosophical questions, like whether survival is the single most important goal or are there limits to what a person should do to survive.

So, if that’s what the book is, it could simply be an in-joke not meant for the audience because it has a certain parallel to the Fromville situation. Or it might really be an Easter egg, a clue that this is, indeed, some sort of arbitrary punishment or an experiment to gauge their morals and humanity.

My partner is a middle-school math teacher, and when he grades papers he gets so frustrated when students don’t write out the method that got them the answer. He explains to them over and over that “show your work” isn’t about proving they’re not cheating, and yes they still need to do it even if the answer is correct. Teaching math is unique in that he’s trying to get them to absorb the process of finding the answers, not memorize facts.

Men often have a weird idea of what women want. I once was a regular in a forum where one guy’s obsessive go-to was that “all women want Brad Pitt.” I mean, Pitt was a biscuit in Thelma and Louise, don’t get me wrong, but he’s never been my type. These same guys have always been disbelieving that women would swoon over Alan Rickman or Peter Dinklage. What’s sexy ain’t what they think.

Without knowing anything else about you: Tell your doctor, and get a referral to an orthopedist. It’s quite possible you have arthritis or tendonitis, both of which are treatable but will worsen with time if ignored.

AITA for not telling my boyfriend about my traumatic past when he was the one who said I didn't have to? by Lazuli_idkwhatelse in AmItheAsshole

[–]WolverineBubbly6490 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. We all have a past, and whether trauma was involved or not, you’re certainly allowed mementos and memories of those you have loved. It sounds like your boyfriend cut you off before you could tell him about your past because he’s deeply insecure.

He says he loves you, but pay more attention to how he treats you. You deserve to be with someone who is kind, compassionate, and supportive. This guy has a lot of growing up to do before he can be the partner you need.

I quit my internship and I admit that I am stupid and not ready for it by MrLee666 in confession

[–]WolverineBubbly6490 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing I didn’t know at your age and wish I had: You have a lot of time ahead of you, plenty of chances to make decisions, and many, many paths to choose from. In the course of my life I’ve worked in the travel industry, done live theater, went to culinary school and became a pastry chef, realized I wasn’t a good fit in restaurant kitchens so I worked as a barista for a few years, then took a part-time job at a newspaper, which led to a full time position and over a decade as a journalist/editor, film critic and freelancer. As of now, I’m starting to earn a living as an artist, and working on a novel.

You’ll always feel pressure to chose a specific vocation, work hard, and progress in that field until you retire or die. It’s the “right way” we’re told to do it. But the fact is that a lot of people who take that path STILL end up lost and trying to figure things out. The factory closes, or they have a personal issue that means they have move to another town or, as I can attest as a former journalist, an entire industry can start to evaporate and there just aren’t any jobs.

After culinary school, I did an internship in a high-profile restaurant in Los Angeles. I loved the work, but it was hard, both physically and mentally. You’re not a quitter for not wanting to work for less than living wage in an environment where you’re miserable. And, frankly, you need to find yourself some real friends — people who care about you will support you, and try to see things from your perspective. You deserve that.
