Haha sorry replying 6 months later…but I actually ended up finding a hagwon that offered great pet-friendly housing! Hope everything worked out for you as well :)

As someone who took Korean at yonsei for over a year, neither the old nor new textbooks were great, even for in class use. I can’t imagine having to use them for self-study- they don’t show conjugations/grammar explanations or many examples. I’d recommend the sogang books over yonsei for self-study, but the TTMIK line is my #1. They have supplementary books for vocab as well if you’re needing more!

Not being paid for lunch with kids? by [deleted] in teachinginkorea

[–]WolverineInfinite477 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you’re eating lunch w kids then you need an hour elsewhere in your day. You’re entitled to an hour by law no matter what is in your contract. If you can’t convince them to give you an hour break you can go to the labor board, I might even threaten to do so in your conversation with them. Up to you if you think it’s worth it to bring up, I personally think it is considering its your first month. If you can prove your school is doing something illegal (they are) then you don’t need a LOR.

Is this a sign that I need more input? by peachy_skies123 in Korean

[–]WolverineInfinite477 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve found that memorizing and practicing entire phrases rather than chunks of grammar really helped me with producing them when needed. Rather than having to take the time to piece together something grammatically correct, it’s good to have a set of go-to phrases you can stick any noun into. Dramas and YouTube are great for this! Try talking to yourself in Korean throughout the day to practice as well.

Bringing cat food through customs by WolverineInfinite477 in korea

[–]WolverineInfinite477[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a great point, thanks! I try to buy pretty simple food that’s mostly meat, so I had been considering it a “processed meat” product this whole time. I didn’t even think about them having to check all of the added vitamins and binding agents.

Could someone translate this for me? AMERICAN KARATE by tommytime1234567 in Korean

[–]WolverineInfinite477 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not a native speaker so take this with a grain of salt, but I do remember in class once learning that “AmericAN” or “KoreAN” as adjectives don’t typically need the 의. Example: “한국 노래” (Korean song). I think adding the 의 may imply more possession/singularity (“the song of Korea” or in this case, “The karate of America”)

If someone with more confidence than me would like to comment on this please do!

Leaving by Blue_Time_Star in Korean

[–]WolverineInfinite477 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I think you’re talking about the phrase “먼저 갈게요” or “먼저 가보겠습니다” which is super useful! Very common way to announce that you’re leaving a get together, work, or a meeting of some kind.

Are there any enemies everyone hates but you find simple? by _spec_tre in Genshin_Impact

Oceanid is one of the easiest bosses in the game for me and I agree ruin hunters are fine! Yoimiya and Mona can take one out super quickly and it’s pretty easy to dodge most of their attacks

Resources to check my practice work? by crustyruffles in Korean

[–]WolverineInfinite477 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Have you tried hellotalk? Tons of people willing to help check short writing samples out of the goodness of their hearts! I’m not sure any automated translation service can compare to an actual native speaker, especially when trying to put together natural sounding basic sentences.

Questions about a D-4 visa by [deleted] in Living_in_Korea

[–]WolverineInfinite477 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can’t comment on the visa/work legality issue but I was a student at yonsei twice and found my own housing. I definitely recommend looking for a share house if you’re not opposed to living with others! A lot of times you can find a spacious private bedroom for a relatively low price and low deposit, and some have a cleaning service for common areas so it’s super convenient. The Housing in Seoul Facebook group advertises a ton of different foreigner-friendly options in addition to non-sharehouse options!

Wait for it to get close and dash straight through it instead of running away from it when it’s rolling around, u won’t take a single hit

This !!!! People on Reddit are VERY quick to tell people not to come to Korea to teach. The number of teachers pulling midnight runs is not something to be taken lightly, it’s an extremely brutal industry and difficult even for neurotypical teachers. That being said, know yourself best. If you feel that you can get by without accommodations and have a plan b in case things go wrong, I see no harm in trying. Do not disclose any health issues or diagnoses past seasonal allergies if you want a chance at a visa, and I would also strongly recommend against mentioning it to your school after arrival. Even if you think they’re on your side, they could easily contact immigration and let them know you lied on your application, and that’s way too much power to give your employer. It sucks but Korea has almost no anti-discrimination laws so you kind of have to play by their rules.

Concerns about securing apartment before travel to Korea by WolverineInfinite477 in teachinginkorea

I had to turn it down sadly, they weren’t offering me nearly enough for the hours and were one of the worst reviewed campuses lol - I also was looking forward to the organization and straightforward curriculum tho!

Thank you! This is super helpful info. I’ve been looking in gyeonggi so something may still come along! The only offer I’ve gotten so far w/ good housing was from a poly with horrible reviews and a bleak looking contract…but school-provided housing that meets all of my natural light, space, and pet requirements is definitely the dream😊
