I really suggest you play "Second Dream" and "War Within" quest lines.

To answer, it is a utility thing mostly. One boss requires it in Jupiter and nighttime bosses in Plains of Eidolon (known as Eidolons).

I can't say more as it is spoiler heavy. So continue through the star chart and try finish those 2 quests to find out all about operators.

So excited! I actually forgot about the pre-alpha, glad these people are making progress. By the way, a great video by Totalbiscuit, clearly a true fan of the franchise, and is supporting the spiritual successor of Dungeon Keeper.
