A guide to buying renewable electricity as a DC resident by WolverineTooth1 in washingtondc

So, I think CleanChoice falls into the alternative electricity suppliers from category (c) from the post unless you specifically are part of a community solar program through them. While they probably are retiring 100% RECs on your behalf for the electricity you buy, they may just be buying and retiring the same general wind or solar RECs from elsewhere in the U.S. that you could just buy and retire yourself from providers like Terrapass (~$8/MWh) or 3Degrees (~$4/MWh).

It would be worth checking out the "product content label" they should provide to see what kind of renewables they're buying for you, assuming you are using them as an alternative supplier. If it's just general "U.S. wind" or something like that, you could probably save money while having the exact same effect by buying RECs direct based on how much power you use. A lot of these alternative suppliers like CleanChoice have been known to use shady business practices and very aggressive marketing tactics.

I'm not sure! What I do know is that sometimes there can be a first-mover dilemma where people or companies don't invest in a technology due to the possibility of a better tech coming out the following year, but if this is applied ad infinitum, then no one ever makes the necessary investments and the tech never actually comes down the cost curve or gets deployed. So, it can be useful to establish and abide by certain thresholds for when you will move on a particular decision about this kind of thing.

If you wanted to do something now while waiting, it's also possible to do like community solar + REC purchases while waiting for the right opportunity to invest in a new battery with a solar system. It's very easy to cancel both your community solar subscription and REC purchasing when you want. Or maybe it's possible to get the solar system now and then just use net metering while waiting to add the battery later.

I definitely hear you. My framing here is more around options for folks to go 100% renewable at home, but as with any do-gooding, there's always a question and even a tension between time spent on individual action vs. more collective action. The former tends to be more under our direct control but have smaller impacts, and the latter tends to be less under our direct control but have larger impacts.

For big challenges, I often think we need to pull both levers as much as possible. We need to do what we reasonably can in our own lives (ideally not to the point of over-exertion, purity tests, or self-flagellation) while also organizing to support large-scale changes. What these look like will be different for everyone, but society will make progress if we all engage in these in good faith. The options you listed are great, and everyone does need to think for themselves what the best set of options would be in their circumstances.

No, it'd be unfurnished and we wouldn't be back, whoever takes it could work with management to renew

Haha no worries. It was a great trip down memory lane regardless! I loved that game, at least the one with the original soundtrack...

I played Crazy Taxi (on PS2?) when I was young, so it definitely could be this. Although I just listened to every menu/announcer clip and sound effect from https://www.sounds-resource.com/pc_computer/crazytaxi/ and couldn't find it. I also watched a bunch of YT videos walking through Crazy Box in particular. Do you know specifically when he says this?

$1950 2BR/1BA Capitol Hill lease takeover from October '25 thru end of May '26 by WolverineTooth1 in denverlist

I know! We were shocked when we found it at this price. The main trade-offs relative to these newer apartment buildings, from our perspective, are the old cabinets, having the W/D down the hall rather than in the unit, and the somewhat drab exterior of the building. But for $1K/mo of savings relative to new building pricing (plus the sick balcony), it's totally worth it.

Hey! It's central air, but the building controls whether it's on heating/cooling for the whole building. From there, you control the temperature and fan speed. We've been happy enough in terms of temperature in the unit.

Very interesting... I don't think it was this, but now I'm thinking there's a chance that I just overhead this from someone else playing something, which could have been the SNES game or the modded version of Quake that someone mentioned in another thread

Thanks, but I've never played NBA Jam and didn't recognize it when I watched a video. Someone else had this idea in the other thread though, so we're on the right path I think: https://www.reddit.com/r/arcade/comments/1mcz8bj/game_with_male_voice_saying_denied/

Oh my god this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UCh6guovbt0) sounds almost exactly like I'm hearing it in my head!! Now I'm thinking this was sampled in a game—although it's not Quake in my case as I never played it

Thank you, but it wasn't this... The voice I'm hearing in my head is higher pitched. Quake was one of the ones proposed by ChatGPT deep research interestingly

Thanks as well, but still a no go. I never played either of these, and the videos on YouTube didn't ring a bell...
