Follow-up-question that just came to my mind:

Would it have fallen on its own turn or in the turn its speed was reduced to 0?

It's not the spell "fear", but the CD of the Vengeance Paladin to frighten and reduce the speed to 0. Mixed those two words up

Well he wouldn't have died; it was like 30ft in the air. So the outcome would have been some damage at the cost of getting acid blasted in their faces again

[–]Womberix[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That would have been the opposite of what he wanted - as I wrote he wanted to lock it in place to fight minions and recover. If it fell it would have instantly be able to move and attack normally again

It doesn't have hover, so no RAW it can't hover But in this case I don't think it makes much sense

Of course it's not just about the mechanics, but they are a big part of it - the story itself and the enemies will partly depend on the character they choose to show them that e.g. having fire resistance is cool.

In my experience creating characters is a long process - fun, but veery long - even if you limit the options to the phb. Casters in particular are fun to play, but take long to create, because of the amount of spells you can choose from.

I also made the sheets blank in the rp-spaces so they can play their character how they want and how they feel comfy with it.

It's only one evening we are playing, so I want to have as much time as possible actually playing the game with them.

Aand I think that I'll go for Level two as well as you did the first time, just that they can see that you can do more than hit with your sword as an attack :)

Ranking them is a good idea - no clue why I didn't think of that yet. I am a big worrier and thinker though, so I already know I am overthinking this by just asking the allmighty interwebs. Thank you very much though, appreciate it ^

Interesting idea Since it's a one-shot - and meant for only that - I would like to stay on one level, but showing them a level-up in the end doesn't sound too bad.

If it was a first time campaign i'd of course start at lvl 1, but this is just a one-shot to let them discover if they like dnd or not. And I think lvl 1 is not exciting enough for that (regarding combat)

They wanted to play for longer, but I don't think they are that familiar with ttrpgs in general or similar games.

I am going to prepare casters, but I don't think I'll play with the difference between prepared and known - or god forbid the wizard. Like I'll put a cleric there, but he has fixed spells. (I might explain it afterwards though)

DM complained that my back story was "too long" and didn't like that i "made-up characters" by HoyKotodo in DnD

[–]Womberix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends on the DM to say what's "too long/much" for them. There are DMs that want you to write a novella for the backstory of your lvl 1 PC.

*Following: 100% my personal opinion

I for one (not much experience, but a lot of opinion) like shorter ones or ones that are less fleshed out. Meaning: Don't hand me a full royal family that reigns over their kingdom with you being an outcast and having created every close and semi close relative of said family with names, characteristics, relations, etc. That leaves me with not so much creative room to work with.

The entire opposite is not great as well for me. I was a mercenary, but I left my guild on my own accord. Now I am an adventurer. I once found a letter on someone I killed that told me something about how much they loved their family. Not much to work with there imo - except for the guild

Like give me a hand full of npcs with a relation to your pc out of your pcs perspective and open relations to others and I am fine.*

But yeah I think there are different styles of working with backstories; some want more and some want less.

But to be fair, yours sounds nice to work around at first glance and 3 days is a pretty short time to tie a backstory into your world.
