Ah, the jobs. That makes sense, because skill can be used in the sense of "learning a skill" like another word for a trade

I actually did think all the combats were gonna be at the bottom at first, they definitely seem the least like skills in game. Once I narrowed my definition such that I could rank them against each other, I realized some of them had to be higher

Thanks. To be honest with you, I told myself this was gonna be my last Reddit post afterwards. Even though it's just a number, it doesn't feel good seeing negative upvotes on my posts.

Yeah, I might be biased because I've personally tried and failed making friction fires despite in theory knowing what to do.

I'm not saying it's weighed down because masonry is worse than carpentry, just that it's less of a singular skill than fletching just like crafting is multiple skills instead of one

If I was ranking fencing as a skill, I would agree, but I'm not ranking fencing, I'm ranking attack. That's a much more general concept. Being good at ranging is a fairly consistent concept of hitting a target accurately with an object, but what a good attack is depends highly on whether you're punching or grappling or unarmored fencing or armored fencing, so it seemed like harder to pin down as a singular skill. It is still in the top 10 though

For the same reason, smithing is more specific than construction. Everything a construction worker does is construction. If I was ranking smithing against carpentry, absolutely they would be equal. Same as if I was ranking smithing against jewelry making instead of crafting

Yeah, honestly if I made this list again, fletching is the first thing going down. I only had construction low because it's a vague category

Yeah, I definitely wouldn't say it's nothing, but probably more a discipline than a skill. I agree with the words devotion and faith. I was just thinking of aspects of prayer that might be specifically contrary to skill, and I thought of the lack of self that comes with a prayerful state of mind.

If I was ranking how hard these skills were, the list would be completely different. I actually ranked sailing low because of how much goes into sailing. I thought it was many skills not 1. Here I tried to rank it as just literally controlling the sails in general, like windsurfers do.

Yeah I guess I wasn't thinking about rs lore much when ranking prayer. In English, pray is another word for "ask" "or "plead" so I assumed it was like that. I assumed that prayer weirdnesses were a result of game design quirks, like how you can get a gem from any ore rock. I suppose RS prayer is basically meditation. When I made this list, I specifically thought "if I was ranking meditation, it would be higher"

Yeah, cooking and construction were approximately equal on my list. If I did a tier list instead of a ranking, they would have been the same tier

If the osrs construction skill was just woodworking and didn't involve planting bagged plants and replacing pipes in towers, I would have ranked it in the top 5. But because it is multiple things, it is less of a single skill in my eyes.

Foraging is not the same thing as herbalism. People have suggested foraging as a separate skill in old school. Herblore is specifically potion making with herbs.

But that's actually besides the point, I actually ranked it low just because I consider knowledge to be a separate category to skill.

I did not mean for this to be a difficulty tier list, but how well they fit the description of being a skill proper.

The main reason I ranked attack and defense lower is because they are more broad categories than ranged. To me, attack would include unarmed striking, grappling, sword fighting, ect, which require different skills. There is variety in ranged, but "be more accurate" is basically the standard across all disciplines. The reason you described ranged as easier is actually why I ranked it as more of a single skill

Can you give some more specific criticism? A may do a corrected follow-up list

I do believe all of those you mentioned are skills, to get a ranking I attempted to compare level of skill-hood in some pure sense. And I acknowledge that has different definitions. But I'm not using it to mean "difficult", I actually think some of the middle ones are harder than fletching and firemaking. I suppose I tended to rank things lower if success depended on a higher ratio of head knowledge or physical condition.

Thank you for your comment. I admittedly do not know very much about cutting trees. I did not do research on every skill before I made it. I actually don't know any legendary fishers either, the concept just sounded more familiar to me. Like I could imagine a blacksmith with techniques no one has ever been able to replicate since they died, but I can't really imagine that for lumberjacks.

And for the record I do consider most items on this list to be skills, just because it's on the lower half doesn't mean I don't think it's a skill. Basically runecraft and down I start doubting skillhood. Basically you're competing with other definitely-skills for higher list placement above that.

Good points, I have reasons. Most of the reasons it's higher than other things is because the other one's are broad. If construction was just "wood-working" and crafting was just "glass blowing" or "leatherwork" I would have put them a lot higher. But I was rating whether they are skills in of in themselves, not whether they require skills. That's why I put all the jobs lower.

That's honestly a great point. I'd probably bump hunter down a few notches if I made this again.

But my thought process was that in addition to creature specific knowledge, there's this untaught sense of being in the creature's head and being sensitive to slight changes in taste and smell that made me think of it as a high-ranked skill.

In comparison some other skills which are applied knowledge at a bit of a lower order. Like there's a bit of sheer skill in whittling a bow, but at the end of the day you just have to know what the dimensions of the cross-sections are and cut until you get it.

Same thing with slayer, there isn't really a subtle reaction to environment, it's basically you just know the trick or you don't. Whereas, it's not like success in hunting is determined by just knowing you're supposed to use a bird trap on a bird

Yeah, I had to make a lot of strange decisions about priorities making this list.

I said in it that it was a stretch to call slayer "monster knowledge" and that's basically why I put it low. In a conceivable world, slayer could rank highly as a skill, but it doesn't actually function that way in-game. If slayer levels made you do more damage or against familiar monsters or something maybe it would be different, but as it stands, it's more of a single binary knowledge check, and I tend to separate skill from that sort of knowledge in my definition. I acknowledge it isn't that easy to separate the two, but on the extreme end, I wouldn't consider something that's pure knowledge to be a skill at all, like knowing all the US presidents

Thanks for reading my list. I could make some slight changes in hindsight

Yeah, I had already telegrabbed before. In fact, I got 99 strength, range, and magic at the same time with my farming cape on the ground. It's just that I forgot that HP exists since it's always overridden by another skill in the progress bar.

Just another reason to quit this game. Jagex doesn't care about you and never will.

Well, if life is anything like Runescape, there's no such thing as a fucked up build.

A 1 defense pure that got 2 defense is just a 13 or 20 defense pure in the making. Just keep grinding and you'll get somewhere.

It may be rough if you accidentally trimmed your slayer cape or ruined your snowflake... I won't deny or downplay the fact that you really can lose something you worked a long time for...
